35% of teachers lack good command of English

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Education Ministry revealed that about 35% of teachers teaching Science and Mathematics in schools nationwide have been found to lack a good command of the English language.
Deputy Education Minister Datuk Razali Ismail said such a setback in the teaching profession was discovered during surveys conducted in schools that were selected randomly, to gauge the standard of teachers who are tasked to teach both the subjects in English.
"Teachers who were tested were found to be less proficient in the language and were found to be unable to express the right teaching methods so that students could easily comprehend," he said here on Thursday.
He said students were found to have the potential to grasp the language promptly but these teachers were unable to coach them.
"This situation would actually be negative to the students who would be unable to acquire the contents of both the subjects," he said.
Razali said the survey also divulged these teachers’ lack of enthusiasm and dedication to enhance their command in the English language.
The Government, he said, had provided all types of assistance to these teachers to improve their command of English, including monetary facilities to reference books and tuition classes.
"We found that teachers used these monetary aids provided by the Ministry for other unrelated purposes," he added.
Razali said the Ministry will continue to conduct intensive classes, including sending the teachers overseas so that they achieve a better proficiency in the English language.

tunku : education department or ministry should have done something about it as this programme is not introduce this year or last year. it has been there for almost 5-6years.the ministry can't give excuses of the lack of enthusiasm and dedication to enhance the teachers command in the English language.it is their job and responsibility to do so.about the monetary aid, the ministry should have conduct classes or special training for these teachers rather than giving them money.every district should have their own facilities to conduct the training for these teachers.it is not necessary to send them abroad, as it can be done here.i hope this will not be the excuse to stop teaching mathematic and science subject in english.

For a start, why don't we have the standard of English Language in this blog at an acceptable level? So that it becomes a reference not only among the teachers but also students.

i think students nowadays are more proficient in the usage of english language.but teacher also must improve their english as well.it's ironic when a teacher who doesnt do well in english teach students who are better in english.

measure to bring teacher to overseas i think aren't really a wise move.the teacher can improve their english here in Malaysia.just think and talk more in english day by day.mingle with those who're fluent in english.

the teacher should be proactive in learning english.everything start from somewhere.doesnt mean teacher should discontinue learning once they're graduated as teacher.

i'm sure the "pejuang bahasa ibunda" aint gonna give up easily on this matter.they've been opposing this idea since the very beginning.

but look it at a bigger picture.this is just one many ways to improve the usage of english language among students.i'm positive that Bahasa Malaysia is still well intact even though the govt proceed with teaching math and science in english.

There are indeed a number of shortfalls in our education system and a lot of it falls upon the teachers themselves. The teachers should consider themselves as educationists and if they are to teach the subjects in the English language, they should find all means to sufficiently “master” the language otherwise how can one communicate effectively. Similarly I have encountered acute shortfalls of those so-called educationists in the school co-curriculum of Silat; these “educationists” especially in JPWPKL and the Ketua Jurulatih are a sham to the national heritage when they take the co-curriculum for their own personal vested interests instead of the best interests of the students.
