Coinciding with Ramadan, both PAS and Umno campaigners have largely been on their best behaviour. At the start of the campaign period, leaders from both sides had pledged to conduct a clean and civil campaign in deference of the fasting month.
It should come as no surprise then that PAS' spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has been the first to try to tear the harmony apart.
Waiting until his first official appearance in the by-election campaign, the former Kelantan Mentri Besar described Umno as an "evil" party, criticising Umno supporters' devotion to Islam.
"Yes, Umno build mosques, but they don't pray," he claimed.
"Even the name of the party is not in Bahasa Malaysia but English."
In the run-up to May 5, Nik Aziz was called up on many occasions for branding Umno members and supporters as "evil", "infidels" and "Pharoahs".
These hardly sound like the teachings of a man who supposedly advocates peace.
He even claimed that those who were awarded Federal Government construction contracts to develop projects including mosques, schools and hospitals would be disqualified from receiving divine blessings.
"They are only going after the contracts and not doing it for Islam," Nik Aziz declared on Sunday.
"It is not possible to receive pahala (divine merits) if Umno has rejected Islam."
That Nik Aziz is at it again, and during Ramadan no less, shows where the wizened spiritual leader really stands where faith intersects politics.
This week we also saw another of Pakatan's tried and tested battleground techniques fall flat on its face, with PAS calling for a public debate after tarawih prayers.
Curiously, Vice President Datuk Husam Musa suggested Parti Keadilan Rakyat's Strategy Director Rafizi Ramli should take time away from his misfiring campaign on indelible ink, suggesting he could better represent PAS than one of their own number – much less PAS' own candidate.
It is a lesson that Pakatan Rakyat clearly failed to learn after their failed GE13 campaign in which calls for debates accounted for a large part of their efforts.
Rather than thrash out policy plans and offer any real substance to the rakyat, Pakatan leaders still believe the best path to the voters is a public demonstration of their fastest talkers – or in the case of Nik Aziz, their dirtiest.

Plse ask Nikky what about his close and binding partner the DAP in the the loose alliance with PKR too as how much of being anti Muslims the DAP esp when it advocates the use of the word Allah, and also DAP's opposition to the subject on Islamic civilization at local universities, who question the need to build mosques and for Muslim, the DAP anti Malay stance in NEP. in education , in also causing extreme hardships to the small Malay traders esp in DAP controlled Penang. Plse ask Nikky these questions rather than questioning who much more Muslims you are just because the party's name is in English
