BESUT: Barisan Nasional is said to have retained the Kuala Besut state seat in Terengganu with a slight increase in majority over May's GE13 results.
Barisan's Tengku Zaihan Che Ku Rahman, 37, polled 8,293 votes against 5,688 votes for PAS candidate Azlan Yusof, 48, a majority of 2,605 votes, according to unofficial results.
The official announcement of the results by the Election Commission (EC) will be made at 10pm.
The seat fell vacant following the death of Barisan's Dr A. Rahman Mokhtar, who passed away on June 26.
The EC reported 14,108 or 79.78% voter turnout, with 13,188 votes cast at eight polling stations, nine postal votes and 911 early votes.
Barisan's win maintains the status quo, with the ruling coalition garnering 17 seats in the state assembly to Pakatan Rakyat's 15.
A win for PAS would have resulted in a hung state assembly.
In the May 5 general election, Barisan won with a majority of 2,434 votes.
