New Economic Model Gives Due Consideration To Bumis - Mukhriz

ALOR SETAR, Feb 20 (Bernama) -- The new economic model to be unveiled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak next month will give due consideration to the Bumiputera.
Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said this was in line with previous policies particularly the New Economic Policy (NEP).
"I have received many visits by Malay non-governmental organisations representing various sectors and industries who raise concern that the new economic model will be too open to the extent that it reduces opportunities for Bumiputera entrepreneurs," he said.
Speaking to reporters after opening a forum at Sekolah Kebangsaan Langgar near here today, he said the government would certainly give due consideration to all quarters in whatever policy.
"The government will not launch a new policy that contravenes the constitution and this needs to be clearly explained so that the people especially the Bumiputera are not worried with what is to be launched by the prime minister," he added.
Mukhriz said the people should realise that even though several weaknesses existed in the implementation of NEP, it was proven to have successfully eradicated poverty and given equal opportunities to all walks of life regardless of race.
"The economic problem we are facing was triggered by external factors like the global financial and economic crises.
"So, I think it is not right for some quarters to say that the economic problem we are facing now was due to NEP," he said.

tunku : we hope the government will give due consideration on this new economic model so that the majority namely the bumis will not be left behind.we have seen in many countries that when the minority controls the economy , the country eventually faces unstability.what mukhriz said is right, the economic problem we are facing now is not due to NEP as NEP is a successful mechanism.the problem lies with the implementation.NEP should be fined tune and we hope with the NEM it will enhance the NEP.NEM should give priority to the bumis economy development.

Maybe it is time to consciously put into practice -

as consumers, SUPPORT the Malay/Muslim businesses so that they can at least take off and hopefully stabilise their operations into a long term viability ...

and also help SPREAD the nation's wealth equitably.

The NEP may not be able to build a strong economy and the socialist economies of Eastern Europe are a testimony to this. But a fundamentally strong economy will certainly help to strenthen the NEP.
The NEP in its present form can only be implemented if the Malaysian economy continues to remain strong. Hence, a shrewed Government will adopt policies that strengthen the economy first before they decide on how to spend all that money.Ramalx
