Develop or lose it, Plaza Rakyat contractor warned

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government will issue a warning to the contractor of Plaza Rakyat, a project that has been abandoned for 12 years, to start work soon or lose the job.
Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said: "In a week or two, we will be issuing a warning to the contractor to continue the project.
"If we don't see any development in two months, then the tender awarded to the contractor will be terminated and a new one will be called," he said after giving Chinese New Year goodies to senior citizens and the disabled in Lembah Pantai parliamentary constituency here on Sunday.
Global Upline Sdn Bhd had been awarded the Plaza Rakyat contract, a mixed development project comprising three buildings for office space, condominium and a budget hotel.
Plaza Rakyat, which in Dec 1992 cost RM1.2 billion, is a joint-venture project between Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Plaza Rakyat Sdn Bhd (PRSB).
Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had visited the abandoned project twice since taking over as Prime Minister in April 2009.
On compensation to tenants at Plaza Rakyat, Raja Nong Chik said the Government was not involved as it was the responsibility of the project developer.
The minister also said the planned flyover at Bangsar Baru and Bangsar Park would not be built if residents in the area were against the project. - BERNAMA

tunku : i think there are enough warnings already, now it's high time to change the developer.the cost of construction is very high.it is best for DBKL to look a consortium to build it instead one single company.Dec 1992 the cost was RM1.2bil, what will the cost be now in 2010?they should reduce the project value.

While we are on the subject of flyovers I would like to draw the attention of the authorities to the ones that are being built over the Klang River near Mid-Vally Mall. The new flyover will take cars traveling in the direction of KL from PJ on Syed Putra right into Jalan Tun Sambanthan in Brickfields. This new flyoever to my mind is not necessary. The problem in that area is that near the makan shops located at the end of the road clients park their cars in no parking zones virtually allowing trafic on one lane only. Now with the flyover more cars are brought into the area causing a perpetual jam along that road. The simple solution will be to prevent those irresponsible clients from parking in front of the makan shops. Building the fly over has added to the problem. I hope that the Brickfields Police Station which is located along that road some 200 meters from the shops will do something about this. Ramalx

We have to do something about Plaza Rakyat before jun 2011. we have 9 years more to go until vision 2020. Let say if the project takes 4 more years to complete then it will already be 2015. It is irritating sight seeing. The steel that has rotten for years and maybe we should think about the cost to redevelop the site. and it is sad knowing that the project have been abandon for 12 years. I propose that we can redevelop the plaza and change the plaza rakyat to be name as Plaza 1malaysia.
