Special task-force to follow up on A-G’s report

PUTRAJAYA: The Government has set up a task force to be headed by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan to study the 2008 Auditor-General’s report and take action against those responsible for the financial irregularities revealed therein, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said at a press conference at his office here on Friday.
The other members of the task force will be Auditor-General Tan Sri Ambrin Buang, Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Wan Abdul Aziz Wan Abdullah and Public Services Department director-general Tan Sri Ismail Adam.
“If there’s a need, we will also call in the Attorney-General and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC),” said Najib, who is also the Finance Minister.
“We will have to look into the findings of the report, especially those involving the abuse of power and misappropriation and determine what action should to be taken against those involved.
“I want to state that the reason for setting up the task force is not to launch a witchhunt but to identify those who have intentionally and openly committed such offences -- they should not get away without any action taken against them,” Najib said.
However, he stressed that the findings by the task force would not necessarily lead to legal action.
“Administrative action such as demotions, freezing promotions or transfers can also be meted out,” he said.
The Auditor-General’s Report for 2008, which was tabled in Parliament on Oct 19, revealed that the lack of oversight by various ministries and departments in the procurement of goods and services cost the Government hundreds of millions of ringgit.
These range from multi-billion ringgit infrastructure projects to the procurement of laptops and maintenance of government assets.
For example, Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi Mara Balik Pulau in Penang paid RM84,640 for two laptop computers and spent RM2.08mil on computer software that was not used, among other things.
The Perak government spent over RM15mil on new cars and maintenance over the past four years and was still not able to manage its vehicles properly.
Weaknesses revealed in the report included the Finance Ministry’s public infrastructure maintenance programme, basic infrastructure programme and parliamentary constituency rural development projects involving RM4.59bil for 92,687 projects from 2005 to November 2008 that were still not satisfactorily implemented.
It said there were delays in project completion, work not done in accordance with the original scope of works, increased project costs due to the inclusion of procurement of equipment and assets in the scope of works, unutilised facilities upon completion, improper payments made for works not done and shortage of officers in project supervision.
The MACC has also set up a special team to investigate government agencies and departments based on the Auditor-General’s report.

tunku : this is a very good action taken by the government.we need to get these abuses to the roots.get rid of these people and save millions and millions of ringgit per year.macc should move fast and investigates all the cases brought up by the A-G's report.no one should be spared.take action without fear and favour.just imagine how many schools and clinics can be made from these abuses.the government should not hesitate to take action.let them go against the government later on as long as the government is doing it's job efficiently.this is what the slogan about, people first , performance now.

Tunku,

"People first, performance now".

Small people like me, cant help, but to question the sincerity of the government headed by Najib.

Small matter.

Nuar Berahim years ago imposed RM50 fee per credit, and now Najib follows suit.

To me, if you want to curb unnecessary spending via credit cards, you should only allow "eligible" people to hold credit card, like they did in 80's/90s. You must prove your income level when applying for one, and they monitor your spending/payment pattern over a year before they decide to increase your credit limit.

Unlike nowadays, if you are 18, you get as many credit cards as being offered by "unscrupulous" card issuers, never mind you have income or not.

Should Najib/govt be looking into this instead of "mencekik" rakyat by RM50? BTW, a charge card user pay the full amount each month, not the minimum amount, and these charge card users pun kena slap by RM50 juga ka? So mana yang dikatakan nak "curb unnecessary spending", look like the gomen nak "MENTEKEDARAH" rakyat!

Govt do not regulate the credit card business (like in the 80s/90s) and the unscrupulous credit card issuers issue cards like nobody business increasing the number of brankrupt case, and the "prudent users of credit and charge cards" being slapped with RM50 (principal) + RM25(supplementary) fees?

Macam mana nak sokong gomen yang macam ni?

kredit kad mau dipakainya, 50 setahun tak boleh bayar.jgn pakailah kredit kad kalau tak mampu bayar 50 tu.
yg gomem buat cam tu pasai ada org yg tak mampu nak bayaq hutang kredit kad, tapi pakai kad sampai 10.jadi lani dia fikirlah 10 kali byk mana kad dia nak pakai.
50 setahun, sebulan baru 4 ringgit lebih. takkan tak mampu kot.
pakai satu kad sudahlah.yg dok pakai sampai 10 kad sapa suruh.

Mat Kredit Kad,

Memang betullah apa yang awak cakap tu. Selari dgn saya cakap. Ini bukan masalah RM50 tak mampu bayar.

Ini masalah, sekarang ni, orang tak ada income senang-senang diberi kredit kad sedangkan sememangnya mereka ini tidak mampu.

Orang yang pakai kredit kad, terutmanya charge kad, sememangnya mampu memakai sebab mereka bukan bayar minimum amount, mereka bayar full amount setiap bulan.

Kasi IC photostat, isi borang, minggu depan kad kredit sampai. Asal umur 18 tahun aja, boleh dapat kad kredit, bukannya satu.. tapi dua tiga empat depa kasi.

Ni macam hang bagi kebebasan kat budak-budak main pisau la. Tak kawal, sapa pun buleh pakai kad kredit, asalkan umoq 18. Apa lagi, toreh badan sendiri la sebab tak layak guna pisau.

RM50 tu macam hukum org yg layak pakai kad kredit. Depa tu memang mampu pakai dan tau pakai. Nak marahkan budak-budak main pisau, hukum org tua yang guna pisau utk buat kerja. Ada ka patut?

Budak-budak apply lagi kad kredit. Pakai jugak lagi. Hutang tak bayar, ni pulak nak bayaq tax RM50? Makin tambah problemla!!
