PUTRAJAYA, Oct 31 (Bernama) -- The MIC has lauded Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's statement on vernacular schools.
Its deputy president, Datuk G. Palanivel, said Najib made the right move by announcing that vernacular schools would remain, and that the government would consider the views of the people before making a decision on the proposal to implement a single stream school system.
"By his statement, the prime minister has cleared the confusion that would otherwise, have been another setback on the 1Malaysia concept.
"His statement has clearly given meaning to promote the concept among all races," he told Bernama Saturday.
Earlier, Najib announced that the government would only change any policy if it had the people's agreement; otherwise, it would retain the existing policy.
Najib said a change to a single-stream school system required a major shift in policy and it raised the question of whether the people were ready to forgo their right to choose the type of education they wanted.
The prime minister was asked to comment on the proposal by several members of parliament for the government to introduce a single-stream school system, following an idea mooted by historian and academician Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Khoo Kay Kim last week.
"In all the prime minister's recent moves, he has clearly shown that diversity is our strength. Malaysia is what we are now.
"Malaysians will act together as a nation and support the government, as long as there is no confusion," said Palanivel.
tunku : party like mic ,mca and dap is parting apart the races in Malaysia.the real concept of 1Malaysia is to have 1School for all. how can we achieve races unity to the fullest if all the races going to their own community school? by having vernacular schools is a setback for 1Malaysia concept. look at singapore and indonesia, it's only 1School.they are multiracial too.

Tunku,
PM Najib said the Govt would consider the views of the people before making a decision on the proposal to implement a single stream school system (SSS).
So, it's good to have a national referendum. A simple Yes-No answer. Let us collectively decide our future. A referendum is a fair, equitable way to gauge the preference of the Rakyat.
Macam mana? Setuju?
PenyokongSSS-
Those stupid politician only thinking of their survival. They can apply for Australian citizenship and ask for Tamil or Cina school. I bet you they will be sent to remote island somewhere in pacific ocean for being so racist and against national aspiration.
spot on!!!

How can we have 1Malaysia if we have different school systems? If we don't start to integrate from our early childhood, how can we do when we are older. Just look at our Uni's. The only people that are being conned into accepting this 1Malaysia are the Melayu.
Palanivel - another Sammy Vellu in the making?
The fear that Chinese and Indian Malaysians will NOT need MIC and MCA is the reason for their rejection of the SSS.
It is popularly believed that dropouts from the VS form cheap labour for the small businesses that politicians have an interest in.
So Najib has actually given the GREEN light to get the rakyat's consensus for him to announce the implementation of SSS.
The rakyat has to show their support through their wakils.
This way no one can accuse Najib of flexing his muscles.
When we start to have a 1Stream school there would be no more racist issue for MIC, MCA and DAP to open their mouth for.
What they are interested in is getting everything possible from the Malay or Bumiputra and HOLD TIGHT of what they have.
Regardless 1Malaysia should achieve it target in 150 years perhaps. Same in America when the congress adapted the 14 amendment, not all the whites agreed with it.
In order to achieve a 1Stream school there should be a movement initiated by majority of the
1Malaysia believer...only then we would achieve it in a reasonable time or if not...to let it happen by itself...perhaps 150 more years then.
Rights of an individual cannot be decided by a majority vote. We have very little choice here but to go back to our founding documents. I do not know about chinese but tamil has no commercial value. If you want to learn it for your soul then doso at your own time. Single stream schools are not the answer when the children of the elite are also studying english because it has grater commercial value.
Malaysia has passed the 50 year mark of independence which in the life of an individual is considered to the age of maturity. We urgently need a system that will take an open view about learning languages.Othewise our children will be burdened with our narrow and selfish views. In this day and age Language is only a tool and do not turn it into an ideology. Ramlax
There is a dream that Single Stream is the answer to racism... Why not talk about single language and name as well like Indonesia?
But ask yourselves, in the 70's and 80's and even 90's, how was the situation of racism? Is racism more radical in UMNO group or others? Even if they want to be racist, could they have achieved anything for MCA and MIC?
Racism is from UMNO, but prescribing a so called remedy in favour of UMNO, you think it will work? It sound more like oppression. As it is, we have come more than 50 years and was able to live harmoniously and would have been better if the likes of BTN and UMNO fellas do not come out to fan racial issues. Like what Khairy finally realize, most Malays are living behind their shadow or conveniently use racial issue to gain voter support.
But if you look at most educated malays, do you see them coming out to talk about Ketuanan? Only leaders who are bankrupt of ideas use this to fan support. Why not talk about everyone working harder to gain more knowledge and do more contribution to the country's development and economy before claiming for more 'projects'!
Chinaman.
Folks, Forget about those MIC, MCA, DAP, PKR, UMNO etc etc. Let's urge the Govt to have a national Referendum. It's time for rakyat to decide!

bagi allocation pada sekolah kebangsaan saja.
Sekolah lain, bleh buat tapi guna budget sendiri je.
itu pun susah ke?
1. You cat't have the cake as well eat it !
2. We talk of national integration ; we abhor racism. We support the 1Malaysia concept.
3. Yet we refuse to see the obvious i.e. how the one-school system could help to speed up National Integration.
4. Yes, definitely we need a national Referendum where every citizen will be given the opportunity to chart our future.
5. Leave NOT to the politicians to determine for they will put self-interests above everything else.
6. I can truly envisage a Malaysia where everyone speaks the same language yet conform to their own religious beliefs and culture.
7. We should emulate Indonesia and Thailand when it comes to this issue.
They have fared well ; racial tensions are kept to a minimum.
8. Read again Prof Khoo Kay Kim's thoughts on this topic. Understand well what he sees as something 'good' for Malaysia. Think NOT of the present but of the future.
YES. Referendum is the answer. The result is mandatory and final. If the rakyat say YES to 1School,those politicians not supporting the move, should be sent to ISA.Amacam.. ada berani? Why lah... after 50 years Malaysia still talking about UNITY, LANGUAGE.
Hey Chinaman @ November 1, 2009 5:58 PM
Educated Malays are the initiatives of the SSS at Deminegara blog.
King-Fx
you are on, utilise the ISA
Fat hopes. It is all political talk. The politicians dare not agree to the single stream schools for losing votes. Look at how the decision on the teaching of science and english (PPSMI) was made. It was so obvious that it was a political decision appeasing the racist political parties. The government should consider a referendum on PPSMI before talking on the single stream schools. Give parents to option for PPSMI to continue in some schools. Parents in some schools have voted with overwhelming majority (more than 90%) wanting PPSMI to continue but government keeps saying decision is final
I agree for a referendum, not all Chinese/Indian not agree for SSS, only the non-educated and closed minded will want to continue the vernacular school. For them, it is more of issue of quality of education, case in point, those who migrated to Australia for example, are the one who are educated and open minded, because when they migrated there, there is no such thing as SJKC in Australia.
The problem is, in the Chinese community for example, there are certain people, Dong Zuan for example who use Chinese school as their "periuk nasi", if that SJKC abolish, they will lose their periuk nasi. Who in the right mind want to abolish their "periuk nasi". However, these people, even though not represent the majority of M'sian Chinese are the loudest of the lot.
