Dr Asri May Join Politics

Asri May Join Politics As A Platform To Preach

KOTA BAHARU, Nov 9 (Bernama) -- Former Perlis Mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainol Abidin today indicated that he may join politics so that he can continue with his dakwah (preaching) activities.
Although he had no prior intention of joining politics as he was more interested in the propagation of Islamic thinking, he said, he would do so as a last resort if that could provide him with a platform to continue engaging in dakwah activities.
"If all avenues are closed and I cannot speak unless I am doing so on a political platform, then I will have to rethink my next move. I hope this won't happen," he told reporters after meeting Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat at the latter's office in Kota Darulnaim, here on Monday.
He was responding to reporters' question whether he would join politics to pursue his preaching activities following his detention by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) on Nov 2 for conducting a religious class without a certification of authority.
Meanwhile, Dr Mohd Asri denied that the meeting with Nik Abdul Aziz was a prelude of him joining politics.
He said that he met Nik Abdul Aziz a show of respect as the Kelantan menteri besar was supportive of his dakwah movement.
He also denied that he subscribed to Wahhabism, saying the accusation was not new.

tunku : that will be the biggest mistake for dr asri if he joins politics.if he join politics, his preach will be ignored and will be taken as word of a politician.just look like what had happened to nik aziz. if asri join politics, he will lose respect and he will definitely be bias. just look like the yb zul from kulim, he thinks that he is a great Muslim by telling everyone off including those from pas and dap but he never says anything about his party or his boss's sodomy activities.so dr asri, if you want to preach Islam, stay away from politics as you have the mediums to preach right now.there is no excuse for you to join a political party.you have said that millions are visiting for blog and your ceramah at youtube.you can give ceramah in most of the states in Malaysia.don't do the mistake.

I really agree with tunku. For me, mufti Perak is an example of real ulamak. Cannot be bought by money and power. Telling the truth even he being banned. Nowadays, we can see that Islam is not being respected from non-Muslim and even Muslim itself because many ulamak sell Islam with cheap prizes(power). As a result, there is many ulamak dunia rather than ulamak akhirat in Malaysia.

1. An 'ulama' who becomes a politician is for all intents and purposes a POLITICIAN first , and an ULAMA second.

2. We don't have to look far to justify the above statement. Nik Aziz is more a politician than an ulama.

3. Statements, opinions, even fatwas uttered by the likes of the Kelantan Menteri Besar are, more often than not, politically slanted. For such is the way of the ulama-turned-politician and it is expected to be so !

4. Surely TGNA of Kelantan is more revered as a politician than an ulama.
For if he isn't a Menteri Besar, would he be given much thoughts or attention by many , even by those in PAS itself ?
I think not ! Can anyone imagine TNGA without his cloak of authority as a MB ? Would his religious edicts then be given the same treatment and reverence as he is getting now. Again, I think NOT !

5. We want to believe in an ulama who all but sticks to his religious beliefs, thoughts, training, convictions and knowledge without having to seek political considerations to strengthen his piety and hence his influence and popularity ! An ulama, a true scholar that is, would not embrace such a cheap way towards self-proclamation !

6. It is in this light that we would call for Dr Asri to stop entertaining the idea of becoming a politician. His wisdom is already well-known as it is. His popularity as a 'teacher' who not only disseminates religious knowledge but at the same moment encourages people to 'think' critically and intelligently about Islam, is a known fact. Acceptance of his deep religious knowledge and beliefs by many quarters, and even from his peers, is indeed admirable !

7. In a world where religious bigots' - teachers' and 'students' , leaders and followers, ulamas and disciples - abound in a a closed network of total subservience and acceptance without questions, the presence of the likes of Dr Asri is indeed like a breath of fresh air !

8. Labelling this group of highly educated academicians and thinkers as non-conformists, Wahabis etc by those that oppose, those that feel threatened, those that refuse to open-up and review and those who blindly and stubbornly don't want to accept differring views, is indeed a manifestation of a negative culture that stands out prominently in a 'half-baked' society !

9. To Dr Asri, continue with your ceramah. For you are accepted everywhere , perhaps not in a certain state ; unless of course 'hidden hands' there are no longer in play and a permit is readily prepared for you.Question not why you have been singled-out to endure the embarrasment of being detained !

10. If and I say if political motives were at play during that episode, then all the more you should avoid being one of them i.e. being a politician. Period !

In my opinion, when Dr.Asri have started entering the world of politics, he will begin lost credibility as an original scholars. He will begin "memaki" people that do not support PAS. And may also lie down on the road in domenstrasi street.
