To Be Malaysian, We Must Go To The Same School - Tun Dr Mahathir

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- To become a Malaysian, one must at least go to the same school, said former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
He said a single stream school was an ideal system practised by other countries in the world.
"Well, I think that is an ideal system...no country in the world has got three streams...none...all the countries in the world have got only one stream each based on their own language.
"You can have some schools (of other stream) but the general education must be in one stream," he told reporters after launching Rhythm of the 21st Century - Monologues of Raja Shahriman which showcased the latest artworks of Malaysia's contemporary sculptor Raja Shahriman Raja Aziddin at Galeri Petronas, here Tuesday.
However, Dr Mahathir said in this country, you could not even talk about it because the Chinese educationists were very vehement that their children must be like Chinese.
"The Chinese educationists do not even want Chinese children to be near Malay children.. they mustn't get into contact with Malay children... that is why they rejected our vision school," he said.
However, he said it was bad to remain completely separate to the point where you did not allow your children to mix with other children of other races.
"We are very free, we allow you to retain your name, you culture, your religion but to be a malaysian, we must at least go to the same school," he said.

tunku : Malaysia has been very tolerance on this matter. just look like Thailand and Indonesia, there, they are not even allowed to have their name in their own language and they speak only thais or indonesian language among them.we are not asking that to be implemented here.we want all the races here to have their own identity and preserve their language.they can talk any language. all we want is a single stream school where all Malaysian goes to. through this then only we will achieve unity. right now the unity among the races are just on the surface, deep inside they hate each other(most of them).this is the reality no matter how we try to hide it. the best solution is all the kids mix around from the beginning that is from pre-school level right up to the tertiary level.then only we can understand each other better.let us make our voice clear to the government.we want a single stream school. 1Malaysia 1School.

I suggest you make a list of where the Malaysian Ministers and State Chiefs send their children for education. From kindergarten to tertiary level. I agree on this one school system. But I find it strange though since the very people, the politicians and academicians who suggest this idea don't walk the talk themselves. For the ordinary people they encourage the children to go to government school whilst they themselves send theirs to private and overseas education. Before anything else they should ensure the quality of education for the whole country and stop changing policies every now and then, every time we have a new education minister they come up with fancy ideas to the detriment of our children. Hence the result we get are Mat Rempits, Bohsias and whatever. Stop meddling with the policy just improve on the schools and the quality of the teaching profession. When this is done i'm sure the non malays will slowly but surely send their kids to government schools.

agreed. Malaysian Malaysia must go to Malaysia School not Chinese School or Tamil School.
Talk about fairness and all but never want to be fair at all.

temasekkid,
very simple, you got lots of cash, you give the best education to your children.so there's no point of listing down the names.even some opposition leaders send their children to study abroad from younger age or private schools locally.we don't question that and that is not the issue here.
don't tell me all from sekolah kebangsaan are devils and srjk are saints.it doesn't make sense.
changing policy yes, if the policy is good don't change it and if the policy is obsolete you have to change it. the one like ppsmi should not have changed.

The claims that Singapore Government closed the vernacular schools and have a single school for all are completely wrong

1. Intake in chinese school started to drop drasticly when parents saw that ENGLISH education led to better jobs. The Singapore government only closed the chinese schools when enrollment became negligible. Nanyang Universdity was closed because with the feeder primary and secondary schools were no more. THERE WAS NO COMPULSION. The choice was by the parents.

2. There is NO SINGLE SYSTEM in Singapore. The Malays can and still choose to study in MADRASAHS. Only not too recently the goverment compelled them to teach English, Maths and Science in addition to religous lessons and Arabic. This was because madrsah graduates couldnt find jobs

In conclusion it was the parents who closed the chinese schools while even today the Malays can isolate themselves in Madrasahs

temasekkid,
Education in Malaysia is not considered as previlage to some and we are lucky to have education provided for all Malaysians, irrespective of religion or ethnics. At the very least, everyone have equal opportunity not to be illiterate and have opportunity to learn.

However, to have a very good education, fund is one element that need consideration, and to provide a very high class education to ALL Malaysians, we have no reach that stage yet.

So, in your argument, you should not be suprised. Like what tunku said, "you got lots of cash, you give the best education to your children". They have the cash, and they opted to send their children elsewhere...

And do remember, some wealthy and rich guys do send their children to normal school too..

Again, at the very least, we are lucky that proper education is available to ALL Malaysians.

Hey temasekkid, we are talking about rakyat. So pls focus on rakyat. F*** off to those politicians and stoopid moron Dong Zong. And we don't care about them. The rakyat wants the SSS and we want it know. Stop saying that the SJKC is better than SK. No prove at all. Just perceptions! I was an SK's product. I scored straight A's for my PMR and SPM. So what the f***? Do you really know about quality of teaching? Slowly but surely? Haha sampai kiamat la brudder! The fact is they are really rasist! And it's all about Chinese, right? What a rasist! Cina Cina Cina... Come on lah.. We are Malaysian..and try behave like one!

You can learn to play football in many countries. But when it comes to a football match we all agree to play by the FIFA rules. And to this date no one has made an attempt to change the basic rules of the game using the 2/3 majority. In many Third World countries, excluding Malaysia, they also play football. But whether they went to the same school or not the referee looks the other way when one side decides to use its hands and feet to play football. That is the problems of the Third World countries.Ramalx
