1School for 1Malaysia

Single stream schools can help achieve unity

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government has been urged to restructure the education system including introducing single stream schools to achieve racial unity.
Hamim Samuri (BN-Ledang) said the current multi-stream schooling system did not help people understand the meaning of unity or the 1Malaysia concept promoted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
He said the present system should be restructured where all secondary schools would be in a single stream, thus placing all races under one roof.
“The multi-stream schools can be retained at the primary level. The Government can take over and upgrade the secondary schools,” he said when debating the Supply Bill 2010 here Wednesday.
Datuk Ab Halim Ab Rahman (PAS-Pengkalan Chepa) agreed, saying that a study showed that the present education system had no objectives for the well-being of the people.
Tony Pua (DAP-Petaling Jaya Utara) also agreed that all multi-stream schools be united into a single stream at secondary level so that racial unity could be achieved.
He said the single stream schooling system had been mooted by historian and academician Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Khoo Kay Kim. -- Bernama

tunku : a single stream schools should be at the primary level, not secondary.6 years of separation (primary school) can put so much differences among the students.if everyone is really concern about racial unity and equality why not implement 1School for 1Malaysia.the opposition especially dap should not show their double standard here.all the schools can have multi language lessons like Mandarin,Tamil ,Iban,Kadazan etc.this is necessary in order to bring about a sense of togetherness among school children and to counter the increasing racial polarisation noticeable in the country in recent times.

1. It has been long over-due, this support for a single school system.

2. The fact that various quarters, coming from the public, the academicians and the politicians, speaks volumes of the necessity to propogate such a system. Though the idea was shot-down the first time it was mentioned in the august house, this time though it is most refreshing to notice members from both political divides at least sending signals of acceptance of the idea. Kudos also to the Professor who bravely spoke openly of the subject though expecting rejection and ridicule from his distractors !

3. Putting the important agenda of nation- building and racial integration above everything else is something to be proud of and surely to be applauded.

4. For this noble agenda to succeed, it needs deep understanding, tolerance , acceptance and sacrifice. Surely what the country and the population DOES NOT need is the existence of hypocrites, political and racial bigots who would just oppose for the sake of opposing, thereby disregarding and destroying a very important step in the nation's history towards building a stronger and stable nation.

5. The public cannot and should not entertain such groups who would stop at nothing to destroy something that is good and beneficial for all Malaysians. Personal agenda should NOT be entertained nor supported !

6. If I may add ( and there is already kind words for this ) a single school system should start from the primary schools. Every educationist and psychologist woeld agree that it is much easier to incultate good values in the young. Six years growing up without malice, mistrusts and suspicions gives this noble programme a sure chance of succeeding at the secondary level; thereby creating a very strong foundation for a responsible, caring and disciplined citizenry !

7. At this juncture, allow those at the relevant and responsible positions to map-out and chart the best possible way to make this important step a resounding success. Teething problems at the outset is but a natural phenomenon which requires not only a complete understanding, positive attitude and open-mindedness BUT also a sincere sense of sacrifice, to make this effort a success !

8. Ten to fifteen years from now will emerge a new breed of Malaysian citizens who are more caring, more assimilated, more understanding, more cohesive, more resilient, more tolerant etc ; something which we at this present moment really need to be reminded of, re-educated and re-brand !

Kind regards to all !

1. Correction to two spelling mistakes in my comment :

" Line 2 in Para 6 : Every educationist and psychologist woeld ( would) agree that it is much easier to incultate (inculcate) good values in the young "

Sorry !
