KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 - Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir today defended the Internal Security Act (ISA) and lamented that the public had failed to see the benefits from the controversial law that allows preventive detention but which activists say has been used against critics of the Barisan Nasional (BN) government.
Mukhriz added that Malaysians should not be against the ISA because the law ensures that the country remained peaceful and harmonious.
“The people cannot really see the benefits from ISA but if we realise that we are able to send our children to school and shop safely then we can see that all of these are from a government policy to provide protection to the people,” he said.
The 1960s law was enacted when the country was facing the communist threat but critics and human rights activists say it is now being used against political opponents.
Those previously detained include religious extremists, currency forgers and a nuclear parts middleman, but among detainees include opposition politicians and other activists.
Mukhriz explained that Malaysians were actually fortunate because the nation’s political situation was better compared with many other countries.
“The peaceful political situation will build a strong economy for the country. Let’s not do anything that will jeopardise this,” he added.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has promised a review of the ISA but it is still unclear which provisions will be amended.
Opposition politicians and activists have demanded the law be repealed.
tunku : if only Umno has Ketua Pemuda like Mukhriz.the sad part is the ketua pemuda umno now is confused and misunderstood the ISA. country like usa, britain and all the so called freedom and democracy countries had adopted ISA like security act and here some monkeys wants it to be abolished.they don't realize the threats.all they know is their leaders ask them to jump on the streets so they have to do it.

tunku,
I've mentioned this in my blog:
Yang tidak ditahan dibawah ISA itu adalah berjuta rakyat Malaysia yang menjalani hidup secara normal, menjalankan tanggungjawab seharian mereka, memastikan perut keluarga mereka terisi dan kesihatan keluarga mereka terjaga.
I wonder what's got into the so called leaders who are anti-ISA. Sacrifies ISA to save thousands, but make millions unsafe?
Good luck!

p/s: the Good luck wish is a cynical one..not wishing them real luck..haha
Dear Dato,
Maybe we are all mislead in so many ways on the true purpose of retaining ISA. I take that as one of the many reasons given by the government to justify retaining the Act. But what are you guys doing to explain all these to the public. The government is making statements in the comfy of your posh offices while meanwhile, GMI and the opposition are going down to the ground to explain to the Rakyat. All talk and no action ...sounds familiar.
Arcadia
Agree with Arcadia
the grassroots activists should go down to the ground to explain to the rural folks as to the real agenda behind this mass protest
the opposition camp did their compulsory rounds
but it was rumoured that they have been paid to participate
people already understood ISA which had been there for many many years.it is just that the opposition had manipulated it.anwar once supported it whole heartedly but after been kick from the government he suddenly opposing it.these are all sick people which uses the normal people for their personal interest.
I agree with Masjid India.the ISA have been there for ages. Nothing complicated to understand it. The opposition just wanted to distract people from their own internal problems, sex scandals and corruption cases, thus, creating havoc and trying to shame the Govt. in the eyes of the world. We don't buy this.

Tunku,
You missed an important point. The developed world mentioned by you only use thier ISA against foreigners. And even if they are their own people most of them are naturalized citizens.Ramalx
