KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 (Bernama) -- A senator Friday urged the government to reveal the amount of ex-gratia payments to six former judges who were either sacked or suspended from duties during the 1988 judicial crisis.
Senator Datuk Syed Ali Al-Habshee said the government had the responsibility to reveal the amount as the payment involved "the people's money".
"The people have the right to know," he told Bernama.
He noted that Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Zaid Ibrahim had declined to reveal the amount each time the de facto law minister handed over the payment to the former judges.
The government Friday made the sixth and final ex-gratia payment -- to former Lord President Tun Salleh Abas, who was sacked during the crisis.
Apart from Tun Salleh, those sacked were Supreme Court Judges Datuk Seri George Seah and Tan Sri Wan Hamzah Mohamed Salleh.
Three others who were suspended from duties for three months were Supreme Court Judges Tan Sri Azmi Kamaruddin, Tan Sri Eusoffe Abdoolcader and Tan Sri Wan Suleiman Pawanteh.
tunku : they ex gratia amount should be made known to public. it's the tax payer money not the money from zaid's or pak lah's pocket.the ex judges has been receiving pension and on top of it the ex gratia payment. salleh abbas said by paying the ex gratia payment at last justice is done. so its all about the money not the judiciary as such.
