Fuel Price May Rise Beginning August, Says Shahrir

KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 (Bernama) -- Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad on Monday hinted that petrol and diesel prices may go up beginning August.
"It will happen...petrol prices will increase, I think the idea is in August this year when the subsidy system is re-structured," he said.
The increase in fuel prices is in line with the structuring of the new mechanism for the fuel subsidy scheme enjoyed by the people now.
"There are already several proposals and the mechanism has been submitted to the Finance Ministry and it will be decided in the best manner," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby here.
He said although the fuel price would go up, the petrol subsidy would continue to be enjoyed by the people based on requirement instead of usage.
"If we look at the subsidy that we receive today, it is based on the amount used, if we consume 200 litres per month, we will receive subsidy for each litre that we purchase. If we use only 100 litres, will will also be given the subsidy, so this means there is no restriction to the subsidy that we get based on our usage.
"The restructuring is also part of the government's efforts in tackling the rising subsidy burden following the significant rise in the world oil price which had exceeded US$130 per barrel currently," Shahrir said.
He said total subsidy borne by the government for petrol, diesel and LPG this year was expected to reach RM56 billion.
The minister said the ban on the sale of petrol and diesel for foreign cars by petrol kiosks within 50 kilometres from the border was only a temporary measure.
He said the ban had already been enforced at the Malaysia-Thailand border Monday while near the Singapore border, the ban would take effect on June 9.
"The ban does not involve sale to motorcyclists as the government is always concerned about those in the low income group and decided to exempt them from the ban," he said.

tunku : the petrol price will rise no doubt and it should as government will no longer be able to subsidize th eprice at the current price.we malaysian should understand this.the current price is USD130 per barrel more than double when the increase the 30 cents per litre. the only thing is we hope government will come up with best solution to help ease the burden of the people.as i had suggested before malaysian car should get subsidized petrol.it will help the local industry too.maybe we can see some good suggestion here.

I do not think we need a rocket scientist to decide to lift the fuel subsidy. Even almost anyone could be able to make that kind of call with a closed eyes.

Do you think we need a Prime Minister to decide to lift the fuel subsidy. Even the regular guy on the street could decide to do that. The timing to lift the fuel subsidy also is not right. The time where most of the Rakyat still travelling with their loves one during school holiday. The Prime Minister could not even wait until the Rakyat coming back from their school holiday. What i could gather from this fuel subsidy issue are:

1. The Prime Minister had failed to manage the country economy. Everything that trigger coming one after another starting with the sugar, cooking oil, rice and fuel and many other things in between indicating that we are unaware and unplanned with what happening.

2. The Prime Minister is running away from the Rm30 billion problem with the fuel increased by dumping the problem to Rakyat to deal with.

3. The Prime Minister not only running away from the Rm30 billion problem but by doing so has directly introduce 8X Rm30 billion problems or Rm240 billion worth of problems to Rakyat. This could come in term of other price increases for 1001 items for Rakyat to deal with.

4. The Prime Minister failed to see the fuel subsidy beyond fuel subsidy resulting the Rakyat suffering. The Prime Minister claiming that the government could not afford the Rm30 billion of subsidy BUT could the Rakyat afford the trigger effects worth at least RM240 billion which is even worst. Running away from the tiger but Rakyat is finally dumped into Crocodile mouth.

5. The Prime Minister failed to initiate another tax for the rich or other kinds of taxes to offset to pay for the fuel subsidy.

6. The Prime Minister failed to come up with a concrete solutions to resolve the Rm30 billion problem by solving the current economic problem base on priority that closely effecting Rakyat. Instead the Prime Minister is introducing more problems that close to Rakyat.

7. The Prime Minister failed to recongnize that first priority is Rakyat rather than Iskandar Malaysia, Eastern Corridor and Northern Corridor. Billions for Rakyat is way better than billion for the corridor if the Rakyat could live a better life.

8. The Prime Minister failed to see fuel subsidy as another form of potential support from the Rakyat to the current government that could not be replaced by another types of spending.

9.The Prime Minister failed to resolve the fuel subsidy entirely. Instead introducing another kind of spending by the government in form cash subsidy and road tax rebate. This does not benefit the Rakyat that has no motocycle, car or jeep that had to pay for price increased of another 1001 items.

10. The Prime Minister has make the Rakyat more poorer and worst than currency crisis in 1999. The Prime Minister had failed the Rakyat BIG time. The Prime Minister has managing the country dangerously. The Rakyat has starting to suffer especially the one living outside the big cities.

11. The Prime Minister has collapsing most of the potential support from Rakyat for PRU13. It has become a time bomb for the Barisan.
