TOKYO, 21 May (Bernama) -- Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will miss the 13th Nikkei Conference on the "Future of Asia" here that he was originally scheduled to attend.
Malaysian ambassador to Japan Datuk Mohd Radzi Abdul Rahman said he had been informed by Nikkei Inc, organiser of the Nikkei Conference, that Dr Mahathir will not be able to attend the prestigious conference due to his state of health.
"I'm not sure whether Tun's office has conveyed it to Nikkei but I have spoken to Nikkei, they say they are aware (about Dr Mahathir not being able to attend)," he told Malaysian media covering Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's five-day working visit to Japan beginning today.
Dr Mahathir had been slated as one of the speakers at this year's Nikkei Conference themed "Deepening Cooperation Towards a True Community."
Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is due to deliver a keynote address on the theme on Thursday.
The conference will see the participation of Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Singapore's former Prime Minister and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Indonesian Vice-President Jusuf Kalla.
