D'KAWI CHOCOLATE -


LOVE chocolates? How about chocolates with Tongkat Ali and Kacip Fatimah? For a taste of such exotics chocolates, take the ferry to Pulau Langkawi and head for the D’ Kawi Chocolate Hut.
There you will find not only these unique chocolates but also handmade top-of-the-line varieties in all kinds of flavours.
Sink your teeth into premium chocolates with local flavours like durian and tangy pineapple praline or packed with Tongkat Ali and Kacip Fatimah.
Owner and manager Haji Salehuddin Idris, 58, says Tongkat Ali can be safely eaten by both sexes but he won’t recommend men to try chocolates laced with Kacip Fatimah lest there be any physiological or physical changes to their bodies!
Tongkat Ali chocolate contains Langkawi Tongkat Ali powder extract and is suitable for locals as well as foreigners as it is not too bitter.
The family-run enterprise produces special edition chocolates depending on the availability of local seasonal fruits such as cempedak and durian.
“We use only the freshest, choicest ingredients and we never use artificial flavouring. As a result, we cannot produce these special edition chocolates all year round,” says Salehuddin. He adds that customers from as far away as Europe, Singapore and Indonesia were astonished when he introduced them to cempedak-flavoured chocolates.
Chocolates are reputedly good for health. Cocoa, the base compound of chocolates, contains vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and a significant amount of beneficial antioxidants (known as phenols) that help to inhibit the occurrence of low-density lipoproteins (LDL). Chocolates have been scientifically found to have no effect on blood cholesterol levels, tooth decay and obesity. On the other hand, they have a positive effect on brain chemistry, heightening alertness.
Studies have also proven that eating chocolates triggers the release of endorphins, natural opiates in the brain that help to reduce pain and enhance the person’s mood and sensual feelings.
What To Buy
Most popular of the D’ Kawi products are Langkawi Heritage (chocolates with assorted nuts and flavours), Enak Praline (premium quality praline with orange, coffee and vanilla flavours), Marble Splendure (marble chocolates with a variety of nuts and flavours), D’Kawi Bagus (quality praline with assorted nuts), D’Kawi Bagus... Langkawi’s Own (praline with assorted flavours), All Almond (whole almond chocolates), Dates and Almond (chocolate-coated pitted dates with almonds) as well as Millenium Bar, Langkawi Special Bar and Lagenda Candy.
Many large retail outlets are keen to promote its products but for now, D’Kawi does not have the capacity or manpower to cope with large demands. However, it is setting up another factory at Kuala Perlis Industrial Estate that is expected to commence production early next year.
Visitors to the D’Kawi Chocolate Hut in Kuah can also buy chocolate cakes, butter cookies and refreshing chocolate drinks. Private orders can be made with at least 24 hours advance notice.

Langkawi's D'Kawi Chocolate Eyeing African, Middle East Markets
LANGKAWI, May 7 (Bernama) -- Producers of local chocolates, D'Kawi Chocolate Hut Langkawi are looking at marketing their chocolates known as D'Kawi Chocolate in the South African and the Middle East markets by end of this year.
The company's manager Syanoordina Salehuddin said among the chocolates it expects to market will be its Tongkat Ali flavoured chocolates and fruit based chocolates.
"We expect to export about two metric tonnes of chocolates to the two destinations," she said when met here, Monday.
She said response and enquiries for the chocolates from the two areas have been good since the company's participation in the Gulf-Food 2006 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates last year.
If the demand for the chocolates, which are delicious and of good quality, goes up, the supply will be also increased from time to time, she said.
On the future plans of the company which is fully Bumiputera-owned, she said it has embarked on an expansion plan with the opening of its new factory in Kuala Perlis earlier this year.
She said with the increasing demand, the production of chocolates will be increased from 20 to 200 kg per day or five to seven metric tonnes a month beginning next month.
The company has also received financing from the SME Bank to enable it to buy four machines for RM300,000 to speed up its production process.
Although it has a new factory in Kuala Perlis, she said the company's headquarters and showroom will still be in Langkawi.
Tourists and the general public are welcome to visit the company's showroom here to view the products and even make their orders, she said.
"We are also in talks with the management of several well known shopping centres in the country to sell the Langkawi chocolates on a wider scale," she said.
The company currently produces 28 different chocolate products including herb flavoured chocolates and tropical fruits based chocolates.
D'Kawi Chocolate will be participating at the MIHAS 2007 exhibition to be held at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur from May 8-12 to further promote the local chocolates.

Well Malaysian Tongkat Ali contains more lead ? How about that
