Aziz Shamsuddin To Bank On Strong Service Record To Win Votes

SHAH ALAM, March 6 (Bernama) – Datuk Aziz Shamsuddin, the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Shah Alam parliamentary seat, says he will let his strong service record in Shah Alam do the talking for him to win votes in Saturday’s general election.
“The election machinery has been smooth and we (BN) are confident of winning,” he told Bernama after meeting Chinese community leaders here.
He, however, said the opposition has been hitting “below the belt” with slanderous statements about him and the BN.
“But I will let my service record do the talking,” said the Minister of Rural and Regional Development.
Aziz, who won by a majority of 13,410 votes in the contest against Khalid Abdul Samad of PAS in 2004, is taking on the same challenger in this election.
Tan Kim Un, Head of the Shah Alam MCA Division, said Aziz has been a responsible and responsive MP. “He has brought a lot of development here and this is what the residents want,” he said.
Tan, who is also a councillor with the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), said Aziz had done a lot in terms of various infrastructure projects and public amenities, including flood mitigation in flood-prone areas and allocations for a senior citizens’ club and a free health check centre in Section 24.
Gina Goh Gaik Siah, the Shah Alam Wanita MCA chief, said the residents were also thankful for the help from Aziz in getting a government hospital costing RM400 million to be built in Section 7.
“It will save a lot of hassle for the residents who now have to go to the Tunku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang for treatment at a government hospital,” she said.
Goh, who is also a councillor with MBSA, said Chinese residents in the area also want a Chinese school in Shah Alam so that students need not travel all the way to Klang to study.
Loo Kooi Thiam, the Shah Alam MCA Youth chief, said public transportation in Shah Alam was still inadequate and this was a matter which the residents want Aziz to focus on when he gets re-elected.
Besides improving bus services, he said, the residents hoped that Aziz would ensure that Shah Alam would be one of the stops in the proposed Light Rail Transit (LRT) system between Subang Jaya and Klang.
“The master plan is already in place and we will count on Aziz to deliver again by helping Shah Alam to be part of the LRT network,” said Loo, who is also a councillor with MBSA.
He said voters in Shah Alam must choose carefully for someone who could continue to bring development for them.
“It’s about the future ... this is what counts,” he said.
