Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has assured Penangites that Umno will not demand for the chief minister's post from Gerakan.
Saying that his assurance was necessary so that there was a clear understanding on the matter, he added:
"In whatever situation we (Umno) will not demand for the post (from
Gerakan)," he said during a meet-the-people session at the Perkampungan
Juru night market on Tuesday.
Najib reminded Penangites not to
gamble their future by voting in the Opposition, which he described as a
loose coalition, neither viable nor credible.
"The Opposition cannot decide on who would be their Prime Minister if they come into power.
"PAS insists on not compromising on the implementation of hudud while DAP's Karpal Singh says otherwise.
"The fundamental issue here is the future direction of the country.
"I
believe I can use the idiom, 'better the devil you know than the one
you do not know' in this context, although I am not saying that we are
devils," he said.
Najib said he would fulfil a request from
residents in Perkampungan Juru to relocate the Immigration Detention
Depot for illegal foreign workers away from their neighbourhood.
In return, he said, the residents should do their part to support Barisan Nasional in the general election.
"Your request I have resolved, so how about my request?
"Can you support BN?," he said to a thunderous response of "Boleh" (can).
Barisan's Batu Kawan division co-ordinator Datuk Ng Siew Lai
earlier said that residents in Bukit Tengah were keen on seeing the
depot relocated to a site next to the Penang Prisons in Jawi.
Ng,
the Batu Kawan Gerakan division chief, had said that the depot, which
was built in the 60s, was a health and security threat to residents.
