Thorough Study Before Imposing Service Tax On Paid TV

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 (Bernama) -- The Information Communication and Culture Ministry will conduct a thorough study before deciding whether to impose service tax on paid television.
Its minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said an Evaluation Committee had been formed to assess the impact of the proposed move on the household economy and the service provider.
"We will do the study as soon as possible," he said after officiating at the Malam Inspitari 2010, a dance programme organised by the National Culture and Arts Department, here, Wednesday night.
Rais said the paid TV service tax issue should also be looked from the financal burden and number of subscribers of the station providing the paid television service.
When tabling the 2011 Budget recently, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced that the government proposed to impose service tax on paid television.
On promotion of culture to the younger generation, he said all the races should be involved in the performing arts, including dance, to keep them alive for the benefit of current and future generations.

tunku : please do not impose the service tax on paid tv.it will be big burden to the majority of its subscribers.increase the sins tax instead.

Many marginal owners of Astro TV, those who have been just able to include it in their budget, may end giving it up just as they did the sypplementary credit card.

By the way does the Ministry of Finance make an impact study before making these proposals or do they do it afterwards.

I have decided. If the tax is imposed I will give up my Astro. In any case most of the programmes are repeats to fill the 24 hours programme and news cycle.I can get my news from the internet. I am geting old and watching TV is a pain in the 'A'.And now a pain in the 'P'.
