History a must-pass subject for SPM from 2013

KUALA LUMPUR: History will be a must-pass subject in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination from 2013 along with the Bahasa Malaysia subject, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.
With the move, students must pass the subject to be able to obtain the SPM certificate, said Muhyiddin, who is the Education Minister.
“We need to give them (students) some time to adjust. We also need time to train teachers and to prepare our students to face the new system," he said in his winding-up speech at the 2010 Umno General Assembly, here Saturday.
He also said that from 2014, history would be made a core subject in primary school under the Primary School Standard Curriculum.
He said the ministry would also make improvement to the subject, with emphasis on enhancing the understanding of the constitution so as to enlighten students about the country's nation-building process.
He also said that the implementation of the school-based assessment system, which would replace the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR), would be brought forward from 2016 to 2014 following calls for the assessment system to be expedited.
"The UPSR (Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah) examination will be retained but will undergo improvement based on current development. But we still need some time to retrain the teachers and so on," he said.
Muhyiddin said the ministry would also channel RM10mil to fund activities of Yayasan Guru Malaysia Berhad, a foundation set up to take care of the welfare of teachers.
"I've brought up this matter with the prime minister and he agrees that RM10mil be channelled to foundation," he said, adding that another foundation, Yayasan Guru Tun Hussein Onn, would be set up, also to care for the welfare of teachers.
"A total of RM200mil of fund will be channelled to the foundation," he added.
He also said that the ministry would implement the Primary School Standard Curriculum with emphasis on hands-on learning, language ability and fun learning, from next year.
The ministry also planned to increase the intake of vocational students to 81,000 students or 20% by 2015 compared to 40,706 students or 10% at the moment, he said.
"A total of RM340mil will be allocated for this purpose under the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP)," he said, adding that four vocational schools would be built during the 10MP (2011-2015).
To enhance competency among vocational teachers, the ministry would train 4,764 teachers to achieve at least Level 3 in the Malaysian Skills Certificate from next year, he added. - Bernama

tunku : it is a brilliant move by the education ministry.every student should know the country's history by heart.they should know and understand thoroughly what is stated in the constitution.by right every citizen of the country should know about our history and constitution. only then we'll be patriotic.

The objectives will have better results if there is a 1Malaysia school system. God only knows what is being emphasized and indoctrinated in certain vernacular schools. In the 1Malaysia School, what you learn in history can be justly reflected in the kids’ daily integration and their future otherwise much of the stated objectives will fade away especially within Mandarin community. Perhaps it will always be “you can’t have the cake and eat it” in our country being the only place in the world where vernacular schools are being perfected for the minorities.

Yes, this is affirmative action towards nation building.

Allocate more time for history of Malaysia and dilute the history of china and india.

Man must have a sense of shame and now a sense of history to be successful in this country.

I told very senior people in government that we should change our education system. In all primary schools the medium of instructuin should be Bahasa Malaysia and English should be taught as a compulsory second language. You can provide facilities for other languages on the basis of demand. And in secondary school all the way to tertiary education the medium of instruction should be english with Bahasa Malaysia as a compulsory second language. You can fit history anywhere you want.

By this way we may be able to take care of ' Bahasa Jiwa Bangsa' and 'Economy Jiwa Bangsa.'

In principle this maybe a good idea but we have to see the reality. Honestly, I have lost confidence as they keep screwing up the education system.

They have put the final nail into the coffin for PPSMI by announcing that science and maths will be taught in BM for primary Year One in 2011 that is one year earlier. Repeated appeals by parents to retain PPSMI kept being ignored.

For the pioneer batch of PPSMI that is those who started Year One in 2003 and now in Form Two, they will be given textbooks in BM for science and maths when they are in form four in 2012. According to the DG of Edu, option is up to the teacher to teach in English or BM and students have the option to answer SPM in English or BM or I guess shall I say all in rojak. Then after SPM, they go to Form Six or matriculation or pre U in English and then continue in English in tertiary level. For the two years in Form Four and Five, the poor kids have to unlearn what they learn in English for the past 9 years and then relearn in BM.

These are the students who have to pass history for SPM in 2013.

Jika pelajaran Sejarah sama dengan penitikberatkan Ketuanan kaum Melayu yang diajarkan di BTN, hasil pecubaan akhirnya sia-sia ajo.
