Ashton, who is vice-president of the EU Commission said: "I wish to congratulate the Malaysian people for their peaceful and enthusiastic participation in their 13th general election.
"I would also like to congratulate Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak for having won another term in office.
"I am looking forward to continue working with his government," she said in response to the May 5 general election in a statement released by the EU Delegation to Malaysia.
Noting the concerns regarding irregularities in the electoral process, Ashton said she looked forward to the findings of the Election Commission and the other competent authorities, who would investigate and address complaints as appropriate.
