The Barisan Nasional candidate for Pandan, Gary Lim Chin Yee, denied accusations that he committed fraud and professional misconduct as a lawyer and announced that he would be filing a defamation suit against his opponent, PKR's Rafizi Ramli.
He told a press conference here yesterday that if he was indeed in the wrong, he would have been called up by the police or the Bar Council for investigations long ago.The Pandan MCA legal bureau chief also urged Rafizi to stop playing "dirty politics".
"All I want to say is Pandan needs someone to do something for them, not someone who indulges in this sort of dirty politics.
"What else has he got for the people of Pandan aside from all this?" he asked.
Meanwhile, Ramlan Ahmad, head of Lim's legal team, said he had lodged a police report denying accusations by Rafizi in various online and offline media.
"All the statements that Rafizi had made public, in our opinion, were meant to tarnish and defame Lim's image, his opponent in this election," said Ramlan, who is also part of BN Pandan's election machinery.
Ramlan said Lim's team was looking at damages of "maybe RM50 million to RM100 million", depending on how extensive Rafizi's accusations were.
Rafizi brought up accusations of fraud and misconduct against Lim just a day before nomination day on April 20, claiming that Lim had a disciplinary case with the Malaysian Bar.
The next day, immediately after both the candidacies were confirmed, Rafizi released documents -- photocopies of a police report lodged against Lim by his former employer (Shearn Delamore and Co), dated Feb 19 -- as proof of Lim's alleged wrongdoing, together with copies of a Bar Council's show-cause letter to Lim, dated Jan 21, seeking an explanation from Lim on a show-cause letter he had supposedly received from the same legal firm for misrepresentation.
The last letter, dated Feb 19 this year, which demanded Lim's explanation for alleged misrepresentation, had also been distributed by Rafizi to the press.
"In some of the statements that Rafizi has made, he portrayed Lim as a kind of bogus lawyer. But he is a qualified lawyer from King's College who has worked with many multinational companies before this. How can you do such a thing to a professional like him?" asked Ramlan.
Ramlan also claimed that the two show-cause letters made public by Rafizi to support his accusations against Lim were private and confidential documents.
