PAS' Version Of Welfare State Will Not Achieve Objective

IPOH, June 12 (Bernama) -- The welfare state as projected by Pas will not achieve its objective if the country is not developing progressively, said Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
He said the objective of becoming a welfare state had to go along with the nation's development to be able to generate economic and employment opportunities for the people.
"The welfare state as proposed by Pas actually has long been practised by the Barisan Nasional government, not only for the Malays but also for all other races in the country," he told reporters after opening the Pasir Salak Umno division's delegates' meeting, here, today.
He said: "We cannot be focusing on the welfare state alone if the country is not developed."
Shafie who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, said BN had done much more for the people than what PAS had done for those in Kelantan (which it ruled).

tunku : pas has no planning or vision to develop the country into greater height, how would they provide welfare to the people? this is just empty talk or promises. just look at kedah and kelantan, is it a welfare state? they should implement it in those states first and show to the public what they can do.don't tell people that wait until they rules the federal then only they will implement it.they failed to help people in kelantan and kedah and now they are talking about the whole nation.as usual, pas talk craps all the time.just to please dap, they have to come out with new vision.

Pas wants to take governments funds and give it in the form of welfare payments while the BN has been giving it to the elite in the hope that they will allow their wealth to trickle down to the welfare state. The latter has not worked and as regard the former there is emprirical evidence that is does not work. The failed socialist and communist states of Eatern Europe are there to undeline that point.

This has been the difficulty of two party politics. In the US the Democrats want to take the money and pump it into the welfare state while the republicans want to take it bailout Wall Street and the banks.

There are no easy answers. But somewhere in the middle of these two idelogies lies the answer to the problems faced by Malaysia. Ask any Korean economist and he will tell you that man does not live by percapita income alone and that having High Income Status is meanigless if there is no equitable distribution of income. This is where Putrajaya has a role to play. Government must keep an eye on the widening income gap if it wants the people to vote for them. Finacial prudence and plugging the waste is a sure way of remaing in power for ever. But this is not how governments work. Governments all over the world are reluctant to tackle the budget problem because of interest groups such as industries that feed on tax brakes and banks and government linked companies that live on bailouts. Confronting these groups rather than the electorate may be the really difficult task for governments that want to make the numbers to add up.
