Toll Increase, If Any, Won't Burden The People - Samy Vellu

JELI, Oct 5 (Bernama) -- The government has given an assurance that any highway toll rate increase will not burden the people.
Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the ministry was currently studying all proposals before the matter was brought to the Cabinet for a final decision.
"As the minister in charge, it's wrong for me not to conduct the study (on toll charges) but I'll make sure that the well-being of the people will be taken into consideration," he said after attending the launch of a project to upgrade Jalan Jeli-Jelawang-Gua Musang here yesterday.
Several parties such as the Malaysian Trades Union Congress and the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations have urged the government not to increase the toll rates for eight highways next year.
Samy Vellu said that at the same time, the government had to be responsible for the agreements inked with highway concessionaires allowing toll rates to be reviewed after a certain period of time.
"What we want to achieve is a win-win situation whereby the people won't feel the pinch while the concessionaires will be a satisfied lot," he said.
Samy Vellu also said the findings of the study on the proposed toll rate increase would be submitted to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi after Aidilfitri.
"We don't want to disturb anybody during this fasting month. All we care about is how to lessen the burden of the people," he said.
The ministry is allocating RM70 million for the road upgrading exercise which will take two years to complete.

tunku : first the news came out that there will be no increase in toll and now it says that if any, it won't burden the people. how on earth would the increase won't be a burden to the people? please explain mr samy vellu.ever single item price is increasing.the transportation sector(bus and taxi) too wants to increase their price from 100% to 600% which is ridiculous, but i believe the government will let it be increased by 50%, then the government said that we care for the public, thats why we only allows 50% increase.end of the day the people who suffers.

Salam tunku:

Basically what Samy Vellu is doing is using the old method the BN gomen had been using for ages.

Step 1:: Assure the Rakyat that the gomen had the rakyat's welfare as their top priority: No increase in toll.

Step 2: Re-assure the rakyat, that they are the top priority , BUT there things that can'r be helped. The companies had done a lot in improving the highways. Its only fair these companies get back their investment. But worry not rakyat. The toll increase will be minimal and nobody will feel the pinch.

Step3:Report in the media that the companies/industry had requested a large increase in toll/tranportation fees.Ridiculously high.

Step 4: Re-assure the rakyat that the gomen will not bow to such high demands. The gomen has the rakyat's interest. The gomen will only approve for a small figure, much much much less then what the industry requested.

Step5: tell the rakyat that everything was settled amicably and everbody(rakyat and industry) is happy with the decision.

Step 6: The gomen see how the rakyat suffer and had to fork out large sum for their transportation.
The leaders and MPs are happy. They do not have to pay anything extra for themselves, right?
