Hui Yi Stable After Second Heart Transplant

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 5 (Bernama) -- "Mechanical heart" girl Tee Hui Yi is stable after undergoing a seven-hour second transplant at the National Heart Institute (IJN) today.
Chief Cardiothoracic surgeon Datuk Dr Mohd Azhari Yakub said the second transplant was performed by the team headed by him and Heart and Lung Transplant Surgery Clinical director Dr Mohamed Ezani Md Taib.
The same team performed the first transplant yesterday.
"Hui Yi is stabil, her heart condition and heart beat are satisfactory, but she is still in the intensive care unit," he told reporters.
Dr Mohd Azhari said they were not happy with Hui Yi's heart beat and her blood pressure was erratic after the first transplant.
"We believe Hui Yi's body resistance rejected the first transplant. This rarely happens but it can happen as it happened to Hui Yi though the patient and donor blood was compatible," he said.
He said the IJN has been trying since last year for a donor heart and was grateful to God for getting two heart donors in two straight days.
Pressed for details about the second heart donor, Dr Mohd Azhari said: "Please respect the family's privacy at this moment of grief. Please don't enquire the details of who they are."
An English daily reported today the second donor was a mechanic from Johor Baharu who was also killed in a road accident.
The first donor was a 15-year-old Malay boy who was killed in a road accident in Ipoh on Wednesday.
The 14-year-old Batu Pahat-born Hui Yi, kept alive by a "mechanical heart" since September last year, received a new lease of life after undergoing a heart transplant at IJN yesterday.
The donor heart was brought to IJN from the Ipoh Hospital via an RMAF mercy flight.

tunku : i guess Hui Yi is a very lucky person, she got the second heart within 24hours after the first heart transplant was not satisfactory.
