Tun Mahathir Declines Nomination For Delegate Seat

KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 (Bernama) -- Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says he declined to contest for a delegate of the Kubang Pasu UMMO to the UMNO General Assembly due to "money politics".
He said the party would "roll out money" to buy votes from delegates if he decides to offer himself for a delegate seat.
"That's why I declined. I know I will lose because they will pay money to delegates not to vote for me," he told reporters after delivering a keynote address at the International Conference on Gold Dinar Economy 2007 here Tuesday.

Dr Mahathir, who received three nominations from branches in the Kubang Pasu UMNO to contest for a delegate seat, has declined to accept the nominations.
Last year, Dr Mahathir, who helmed Kubang Pasu Umno for more than 30 years, received 15 nominations to contest for a delegate. The former Umno president, however, lost as he came in ninth among 15 aspirants who vied for the seven seats.
-On claims that the government was clamping down on bloggers, Dr Mahathir said though there has been such attempts, it would not stop people from using the Internet.
"We have tried. I myself want to ban pornography in the Internet but it's impossible.
"Unless, of course, the people who are putting these pictures in the Internet are taken to court by their own governments but they have been putting these "dirt" from America.
"So, we can't stop it," he said, adding that it was just as the same as bloggers.
Dr Mahathir reminded bloggers to always stick to the facts and not "dabble in fiction".
