No Price Increase, Assures Ministry Despite Pay Rise Wednesday

SHAH ALAM, July 24 (Bernama) -- Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shafie Apdal today gave his assurance that his ministry will not allow retailers to increase the prices of goods indiscriminately when civil servants receive their pay rise beginning Wednesday.
He said the public should not worry about price hikes and he warned retailers not to take advantage of the pay rise received by the approximately 1.2 million civil servants.
"We are confident that the 'Ops Gaji' launched after the prime minister had announced the pay rise for civil servants earlier would be able to control price increases," he said at a press conference after observing preparations for the Launching of the Malaysian Consumers' Day 2007 to be held tomorrow at Stadium Malawati, here.
Shafie said that 'Ops Gaji', which was launched in May, had proceeded smoothly and would be continued until the end of the year to ease the people's fear about indiscriminate price hikes.
"I wish to remind all traders not to exploit the situation because when we take action against errant traders, we don't want them to say we are going overboard," he said.
The minister said about 1,000 enforcement personnel had been deployed to carry out 'Ops Gaji' throughout the country and leave for enforcement officers had been frozen since it was launched to ensure that monitoring could be carried out continuously and effectively.

tunku : the minister with his sweet talk.he said that he will assure no price increase, to me this is an open lie.just go any place most of the goods price had increase tremendously and the minister is giving his assurance.from milk to powder, from rice to noodles everything increased.the most affected people are those who are not working with government, they did not receive any pay increase but have to pay more for goods.shafie afdal ministry have to go on the ground always not seasonally.
