Malaysia lifts foreign restrictions on Tenaga

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Malaysia has ended a 25 percent cap on foreign shareholdings in national power utility Tenaga Nasional, a move analysts said will attract more overseas funds into one of the country's largest companies.
Tenaga said it received approval from the ministry of finance on April 19 to remove the 25 percent foreign investor restriction on shareholdings.
"With the lifting of the said restriction, all foreign shareholders will be accorded the same rights, benefits, power and privileges and be subject to all liabilities, duties and obligations," it said in a bourse notice late Monday.
Tenaga's board of directors Monday agreed to convene an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to seek shareholders' approval over the change, it said.
Tenaga said last month the combined foreign shareholdings in the company as of April 12 stood at 27.04 percent but those above the 25 percent threshold would not be entitled to vote.
TNB's president and chief executive officer Che Khalib Mohamad Noh Tuesday sought to allay fears the company would be foreign-owned in the wake of the announcement, the state Bernama news agency reported.
He said the government currently held nearly 70 percent of Tenaga through various agencies, including a nominal "golden share" which allowed it to outvote or veto other shares.
Tenaga had to make the change since the entry of foreign shareholders was restricted by the cap and the issue of voting rights, he said.
"As a consequence of that, some foreigners especially institutional investors tend to shy away from holding TNB shares," Che Khalib was quoted as saying.
"We think this is good for Malaysia as this reflects the country's willingness to allow more foreign investors into the country without imposing unnecessary controls," he added.
Analysts hailed the move, saying the cap had deterred foreign fund managers.
"This decision to scrap, rather than just raise the foreign shareholding limit, is the best possible outcome for Tenaga," said CIMB Investment Bank.
"Following this ruling, the company will be able to attract more foreign shareholders as voting rights will no longer be a sticky issue," it said.
Hwang-DBS Vickers Research said Tenaga's share price had remained relatively flat in the past three months, which it attributed to the cap and the limit on voting rights.
"We believe that the lack of voting rights for foreign shareholders may be one of the reasons TNB's share price has moved only 5.4 percent since January," it said in a note.
Che Khalib said the EGM would be held by July.
Tenaga shares closed higher in trade Tuesday on the news, adding 0.20 ringgit (0.059 cents) to 12.00

tunku : i guess it's a good move as long as the government will remain its 70% equity in Tenaga.

KUALA KANGSAR, May 8 (Bernama) -- The people of Perak have expressed happiness and welcomed news of Raja Muda Raja Dr Nazrin Shah's wedding on May 17 at Istana Iskandariah, Bukit Chandan, here.
They also were thankful to God for yesterday's announcement about the ceremony by the Comptroller of the Perak royal household, Datuk Seri Raja Mansur Raja Razman.
Mohd Roslee Mat Som, 45, who has served at Istana Iskandriah for 15 years, described the wedding as timely.
"I'm not surprised by the news because the people have been waiting for so long for someone to be named Raja Puan Besar of Perak," he told Bernama here Tuesday.
His colleague, Abdul Risham Idris, 26, agreed and said the time had come for Raja Nazrin Shah to have a life partner.
Rohana Syaaban, 42, who has also served at the palace since 14 years ago, said: "Before this, I only took care of the beautiful scenery at the palace but from today until next week, I'm proud because I will maintain the palace's beauty for the wedding of the Raja Muda of Perak."
A handicraft trader in Kuala Kangsar town, Zalihaha Mat Kasa, 60, said Raja Nazrin Shah's wedding "completed his journey" because a prince needed a partner by his side.
"It's good for him because he has been single for so long. The people are certain that the Raja Muda's choice is someone special and suits him well," she said.
A trader at the Sungai Perak foodcourt here who wanted to be known only as Yahya, said he could not wait to celebrate the royal wedding.
"Yes, how long the Raja Muda wants to remain a bachelor? The time has come for him to get a partner," he said.
Wong, a trader in Ipoh, said the people of Perak would surely be proud and share their happiness over the wedding.
"We're proud for having a Raja Muda who has wide knowledge and understands the people. Sure, we're happy with the development," he said.
Checks by Bernama found that preparations at the palace such as the putting up of tents and work to beautify the palace building, main entrances and surrounding areas, had begun. Sungai Perak Resort manager Norlida Adnan said all rooms at the resort had been fully booked for the wedding ceremony.
"I was told that all rooms at the Kuala Kangsar Resthouse have also been fully booked," she said.
The resort will also act as a media centre for the ceremony.
The people in Ipoh and Kuala Kangsar will get to follow the ceremony live through giant screens at the Kuala Kangsar Cultural Park and Dataran Ipoh.

tunku : can't wait for him to be our King, he'll be a great one.

Utusan and Kosmo Had Not Respected The Perak Sultanate Request..

Perak Sultan's Office Regrets Publication Of Picture

IPOH, May 8 (Bernama) -- The office of Perak's Sultan Azlan Shah, Tuesday expressed regret and disappointment that Utusan Malaysia and Kosmo had published the photo of the Raja Muda, Raja Dr Nazrin Shah's, bride-to-be before her name was announced by the palace.
This was conveyed in a letter from the palace to the two newspapers, copies of which were distributed to the media by the Perak Information Department Tuesday.
The Comptroller of the Perak royal household, Raja Datuk Seri Mansur Raja Razman, said in the letter that the royal wedding involved several protocols that must be respected because they involved the appointment and proclamation of the Raja Puan Besar of Perak.
"As such, the information, including the photo, will be issued in stages after fulfilling several ceremonies, from the solemnisation of the marriage to the bersanding ceremony," he said.
He said the publication of the photo was a clear disregard of the request by the sultan's office to the media to use official information in reports on the wedding.
The sultan's office, in a statement to Bernama yesterday, officially announced that the Raja Muda will tie the knot at Istana Iskandariah, Bukit Chandan, Kuala Kangsar, on May 17 but did not name the bride-to-be.
It said that official statements would be released to the media from time to time to prevent sensationalised reporting and sought their cooperation to base their reports on the statements.
Utusan Malaysia and Kosmo today published the announcement of the wedding on their front page with additional information obtained from their own sources as well as the photo of Raja Nazrin's bride-to-be.
Raja Mansur that except for Utusan Malaysia and Kosmo, all the print and electronic media had respected the request to base their reports on facts and official information.

Mori aims to finish Shanghai skyscraper - tallest or not

SHANGHAI: When work began on the Shanghai World Financial Center in 1997, in the headiest days of this country's economic takeoff, Shanghai was already a city that was hard to impress.
Even then, the erstwhile farmlands of Pudong District boasted two icons: the Oriental Pearl Tower, looking like a science fiction movie prop with its rocket-on-the-launching pad trunk and glittering, space-station-like orbs; and the nearby Jin Mao tower, a bejeweled spire of stacked pagodas that boasted the world's highest hotel lobby.
With competition like that, the man behind the project, the most famous Japanese real estate developer, Minoru Mori, knew he had to aim high to make his mark. And by the time of the groundbreaking it seemed as though his team had struck on the right plan.
Mori, who has a Trump-like three dozen or so buildings in Tokyo that bear his name, would offer Shanghai the world's tallest building, at 1,614 feet, or 492 meters. For extra effect, the roof of his new building would be formed by a giant enclosed circle that would house specially outfitted cars, a sort of Ferris wheel at the top of the world.
If skyscrapers can be said to have journeys, what has happened since, though, has been one long strange trip indeed. These days workers are racing to complete the 101-floor building on schedule, mounting skyward floor by floor toward a hitherto unaccustomed view that looks down on the neighboring landmarks.
But in truth, neither the schedule nor the building itself bears much resemblance to the original plans, which for many people involved may by now almost seem like a lifetime ago.
Record-breaking skyscrapers have a long and uncanny history of association with economic crisis - the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center, for example, were both conceived in the 1920s and completed in the early years of the Great Depression - and Mori's gaudy Shanghai dream would be no exception. Within months of the groundbreaking, a financial crash struck Asia, ripping the bottom out of stock markets and real estate markets alike throughout this region.
Work was halted on the Finance Center, partly out of fears of a shortage of tenants and partly out of doubts over the unspoken premise that lay behind the project: that the Chinese economy was set to lead the world. For five long years, the huge work site sat idle, with nothing reaching skyward save for overgrown grass behind a plain cement wall.
A holding pattern like this would have been enough to sink many developers, but not Mori, for whom completing the project appears to be a point of pride.
"We are not a listed company, so we are able to control our costs very carefully," said Michiho Kishi, a spokesman for the company. "If we had been a listed company, our CEO would have been forced to resign, very simply. That's what makes us unique."
What Mori was unable to control was what would happen while his project was frozen. Five years, it turns out, is an eternity in the record-breaking skyscraper business, especially with countries all over Asia throwing their hats into the ring with new superstructures, each taller than the last.
For Shanghai's would-be title holder, the delay resulted in the building being surpassed even before it could be built, with the additional indignity that the new champion, Taipei 101, a 1,671-foot structure, was located in the capital of the diplomatic rival that China considers a renegade province, Taiwan.
But that was not the only setback. With anti-Japanese sentiment swelling in China, questions began to be asked about the Shanghai building's design.
Some said the large hole at the building's summit was suspiciously reminiscent of the sun that sits at the center of the Japanese flag, a sore point for many Chinese, who still harbor resentments over Japan's violent invasion of the country in the 1930s.
Mori's representatives gamely protested that the circle with the sky ride was based on a traditional Chinese symbol, the moon gate, but in the end they quietly backed down, replacing the hole with a squarish slot and ditching the Ferris wheel concept altogether.
But that still left them with the delicate problem that Taipei would have a taller building. Actually, not a problem at all, as visitors to the site soon discover. There, they are treated to an extravagant multimedia presentation, complete with mock-ups of the world's tallest buildings.
The Shanghai building is shown standing shoulder to shoulder with its Taiwan rival, barely but perceptibly taller, save for the other building's long antenna. In case this point is lost, amid a flood of statistics about the building's 91 elevators, or the special weights built into the 90th floor to counteract wind sway or the 10,000 office people who will eventually work here, Kishi told a visitor: "Actually if you are counting rooftop height, we are the taller building, but we are not after competition."
While diplomatic, the explanation strains credulity, especially for anyone who knows the history. The Shanghai building was originally designed to have 94 floors, rising to roughly 1,509 feet, but has quietly grown since then, with more floors added, as well as more height to each floor, resulting in about 105 extra feet.
All the one-upmanship will soon be rendered moot, however, by a far heavier hitter that is about to enter the stage: a 2,300-foot structure built in Dubai by relatives of Osama bin Laden that looks likely to hold off the competition for a good while.
On the ground, among the thousands of workers who have labored on the project, the outcome of this contest seems to matter little, though.
Amid a lunchtime scrum around sidewalk noodle vendors, Liu Xue, a pipe fitter, spoke proudly of the project. "It's a symbol of the speed of China's development," he said waving his hands animatedly as he spoke.
"It's for office workers, not people like us, and I may never come here again once it's finished. But I'll always be able to point to it, and tell my children about it."

Smart Tunnel Opens On May 14

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 (Bernama) -- The Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART) will be open to traffic at 1.30pm on May 14, said Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.
He said the six-kilometre road tunnel which was originally scheduled to be opened on April 9 had to be postponed as the bottom part of the tunnel had not been fully completed.
"The bottom part of the tunnel to channel stormwater was not ready, that's why we delayed the opening," he told reporters before opening the Federal Territory MIC Convention, here today.
The RM1.9 billion project, which began in January 2003, comprises a 10km stormwater tunnel and a double-deck motorway tunnel.
Construction work on the tunnel was carried out by Syarikat Mengurus Air Banjir dan Terowong Sdn Bhd, a joint-venture between Gamuda and MMC.
Samy Vellu, who is also the MIC president, said the tunnel linked Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Davis to the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Highway, near the Royal Malaysian Air Force base.
This shortens the time taken by road users going to the city centre to between five and 10 minutes only compared with more than 40 minutes during peak hours.
Asked about the toll rate to be charged, he said: "I can't disclose now because I need approval from the cabinet."
The minister said the toll rate would be announced one month after the SMART tunnel was opened to the public.

tunku : thanks God its finally done. This is one of our best project.National Geographic filmed its construction.Congratulation to our very own Malaysian who gave their best in constructing this tunnel. Also thank God that this project started during Tun Mahathir's time otherwise it will be postpone or cancel like many other projects.

Abdullah Agrees With EPF To Reduce Contribution For Workers Over 55

don't ask too many questions, i can't answer

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 (Bernama) -- The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) must have a good reason to reduce contributions by the employee and employer to the savings scheme for workers over 55 years old, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said today.
Abdullah, who is also Finance Minister, said he agreed with the provident fund's decision to reduce employees' contributions from 11 per cent to 5.5 per cent and employers' share from 12 per cent to 6.0 per cent.
"I will go along with the EPF. I think there must be a good reason why the EPF wants to reduce the contributions," he told reporters after opening the World Halal Forum 2007 here.
Asked if the move disregarded senior citizens' contributions to the nation, Abdullah said: "They have already performed their service (and) have earned their income and contributed to the EPF, and the employers have also made their contributions."
The EPF is seeking to amend the contribution rate as outlined in the EPF (Amendment) Bill 2007.
Cuepecs, the umbrella union for government employees, had earlier questioned the move, saying that it would seek a meeting with the EPF on the matter.

tunku : i don't see this as a wise move by the EPF.the best part is pak lah's answer on what is the reason replies that "I will go along with the EPF. I think there must be a good reason why the EPF wants to reduce the contributions,". he thinks only and guessing there must be good reason but don't know what is the actual reason.this is not a smart answer by a person who is a pm of a country.you should know what is the reason before you support the decision.God save Malaysia.

Malaysia To Build US$7 Bln Trans-Peninsular Oil Pipeline

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has agreed to build a US$7 billion trans-peninsular oil pipeline from Kedah to Kelantan in order to transport oil from West Asia to East Asian countries, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said today.
"Yes, we have agreed to the pipeline," he told reporters after opening the World Halal Forum 2007 here.
Abdullah, who is also the Finance Minister, said the pipeline project was a part of the government's move to develop the much-touted Northern Corridor.
"We have always wanted to do more for that area and this also will take care of the Eastern Corridor," he said.
It was reported that Malaysian petroleum transporter Trans-Peninsula Petroleum Sdn Bhd planned to invest US$7 billion over eight years to build a crude oil pipeline to help ships bypass the busy Straits of Malacca.
According to the report, the project will involve the construction of two oil refineries with the pipeline crossing three states, linking from Yan in Kedah to Bachok in Kelantan.

tunku : this is a good project approved by the government. i just wish that the company involved in this project that is Trans-Peninsula Petroleum Sdn Bhd made publicly known as to who are the shareholders etc.it is a big big project worth RM24.5 billion.just imagine if there is any brokerage fee, standard brokerage fee is about 2%, that alone is about half a billion.MAY BE this is what annuar musa was referring to that billions of ringgit coming to kelantan.hopefully that the government will look the environment aspects too before the construction of this pipeline is done.

Chocolates are reputedly good for health. Cocoa, the base compound of chocolates, contains vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and a significant amount of beneficial antioxidants (known as phenols) that help to inhibit the occurrence of low-density lipoproteins (LDL). Chocolates have been scientifically found to have no effect on blood cholesterol levels, tooth decay and obesity. On the other hand, they have a positive effect on brain chemistry, heightening alertness.
Studies have also proven that eating chocolates triggers the release of endorphins, natural opiates in the brain that help to reduce pain and enhance the person’s mood and sensual feelings.

Langkawi's D'Kawi Chocolate Eyeing African, Middle East Markets
LANGKAWI, May 7 (Bernama) -- Producers of local chocolates, D'Kawi Chocolate Hut Langkawi are looking at marketing their chocolates known as D'Kawi Chocolate in the South African and the Middle East markets by end of this year.
The company's manager Syanoordina Salehuddin said among the chocolates it expects to market will be its Tongkat Ali flavoured chocolates and fruit based chocolates.
"We expect to export about two metric tonnes of chocolates to the two destinations," she said when met here, Monday.
She said response and enquiries for the chocolates from the two areas have been good since the company's participation in the Gulf-Food 2006 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates last year.
If the demand for the chocolates, which are delicious and of good quality, goes up, the supply will be also increased from time to time, she said.
On the future plans of the company which is fully Bumiputera-owned, she said it has embarked on an expansion plan with the opening of its new factory in Kuala Perlis earlier this year.
She said with the increasing demand, the production of chocolates will be increased from 20 to 200 kg per day or five to seven metric tonnes a month beginning next month.
The company has also received financing from the SME Bank to enable it to buy four machines for RM300,000 to speed up its production process.
Although it has a new factory in Kuala Perlis, she said the company's headquarters and showroom will still be in Langkawi.
Tourists and the general public are welcome to visit the company's showroom here to view the products and even make their orders, she said.
"We are also in talks with the management of several well known shopping centres in the country to sell the Langkawi chocolates on a wider scale," she said.
The company currently produces 28 different chocolate products including herb flavoured chocolates and tropical fruits based chocolates.
D'Kawi Chocolate will be participating at the MIHAS 2007 exhibition to be held at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur from May 8-12 to further promote the local chocolates.

Early Election ??

Malaysian govt staff to get pay rise amid poll talk
PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia (Reuters) - Malaysia will raise salaries for the country's 1.2 million civil servants, the prime minister said on Monday, a move analysts say could precede an early general election.
Details of the pay revision, the first such hike in 14 years, are likely to be unveiled by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on May 21, officials said.
Abdullah, possibly gearing up for snap polls by early 2008, said on Monday the much-awaited hike was on the cards.
"I think you deserve a pay rise," he told the staff of his Prime Minister's Department in the administrative capital of Putrajaya.
"It is only appropriate for the salary to be increased but the question is the quantum," he said. "When the time comes, an announcement will be made."
Speaking at another event in Kuala Lumpur, Abdullah said the pay revision would apply to all public servants, including the police and armed forces.
Malaysia, with 26 million people, has some 10.3 million eligible voters.
"He is hoping that the civil servants will again go for the ruling party and help it return with a big mandate as in 2004," said political analyst Yahaya Ismail.
Abdullah, who scored a thumping general election victory in 2004, said last week his ruling Barisan Nasional coalition was prepared for the polls.
"We are ready for general elections but the question is only when?" he said after Barisan trounced the opposition in a recent by-election.
Most political experts expect an election early next year, though one is not due until 2009.
Malaysia last revised the salaries of government workers in 1993. However, salaries had been adjusted five times since, the last one in 2000 when they were raised by 10 percent.
A trade union representing government workers has asked for a 10 to 40 percent pay revision, with the lowest-paid staff getting the biggest quantum.

Present Govt Is Still Popular - Najib

BOSTON, May 7 (Bernama) -- The present Barisan Nasional government is still very popular and the recent victory in the Ijok by-election is an affirmation of this, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.
The deputy prime minister said the BN could have succumbed to the temptation of Ijok being a Malay-majority seat and fielded an Umno candidate.
"That would have been the easiest option. But, no, we did not do that because we believe in the spirit of Barisan Nasional. We believe that is the way forward," he said at a dinner on Sunday with Malaysian delegates attending the BIO International Convention 2007, Malaysian students studying in Boston and nearby cities as well as Malaysians living in the United States.
In the April 28 Ijok state by-election, the BN candidate, K. Parthiban, defeated Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim of Parti Keadilan Rakyat, garnering 5,884 votes against Khalid's 4,034 votes.
Najib said the government believed that all Malaysians of different religions could work together and collaborate for the betterment of the country.
"We (BN) share the responsibility of running the whole country together," he said.
"Malaysia, which will be celebrating its 50th independence this year, has a promising future. We believe in our vision and mission," said Najib.
He also advised Malaysian students in the United States to be more analytical and vigilant on information that they retrieve via the Internet as it might not necessarily be the truth.
"There is no way we can censor the Internet, nor do we want to censor the Internet as it gives the freedom of information. But it is how we judge between fact and fiction and not succumb to issues that exploit racial issues or attack leaders and make untruthful remarks against politicians and members of the government.
"So, you must always question whatever you read in the Internet, whether it is the truth or not. That will determine whether we are a knowledge society or otherwise. If we are capable of doing that (being vigilant) we may reach a certain level in the development of our society," he said.
Najib said that with positive development in the society the country would forge and look forward to a brighter and better future.
He told the students to make full use of their stay in the United States, especially in gaining knowledge in their fields of study.
During question time, Najib was asked how he wants Malaysians to remember him if he retires today.
"First of all, it is not timely. And I don't think that I'm due to retire and I don't wish to retire.
"As you know, the prime minister (Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) himself has expressed confidence recently in my leadership. So, no reason for me to consider retiring and I will only answer your question when I'm ready to retire," he said.

tunku : this is why Tun Mahathir had said that it's good if we lose some seats, by winning all the time make the current leadership keep boasting. It's quite funny when someone asked him(Najib)how he wants Malaysians to remember him if he retires today. What is the motive, or the person had heard that najib won't be the deputy very soon? In politics you never knows what it will be in future.Let us hope for the best of our country.

Samy Vellu and Khairy slam Anwar

Hopefully this will be the new line up for MIC leadership especially the guy (second from right).

SHAH ALAM: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim came under heavy criticism from MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu and Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin over allegations that the MIC had neglected the welfare of the estate workers.
When Anwar was deputy prime minister, he “did nothing” for the estate workers, let alone the Indian community, said Samy Vellu, who is also the Works Minister.
“I have copies of letters I sent to him seeking assistance (for estate workers when Anwar was deputy prime minister), but he did not lift a finger to help,” he told reporters after opening the MIC Wanita, Youth and Puteri general assemblies here.
Anwar had also claimed that estate workers were intimidated and bribed into supporting the Barisan Nasional during the recent Ijok state constituency by-election, which was won by the Barisan Nasional candidate from the MIC, K. Parthiban.
PKR had fielded former Guthrie Group chief executive officer Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim in the by-election.
In his address to the MIC Youth assembly, Khairy said Anwar had been touted as Malaysia’s future but Barisan had proved that he was part of history and finished.
“They also claimed that Ijok was a comeback for Anwar and PKR but we have thwarted the nuclear bombs and missiles thrown at us.
“They did everything. They spoke ill of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak but now they don’t have anything any more,” he said.

tunku : samy challenged anwar, karpal challenged samy, anwar challenged samy and it keep going on. i wonder when will kayjay challenge anwar or any other opposition heavyweights.

Mahathir: Chinese voters are strategic-minded

KOTA BARU: Chinese voters in the country are strategic-minded people, unlike the Malays who tended to vote along party lines and based on raw sentiment.
This, said former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, was partly the reason why there was reportedly a small swing of Chinese voters towards the Opposition in the last two by-elections.
Using his experiences in 1969 as an example, Dr Mahathir said that he lost in the South Kota Setar parliamentary seat because the Chinese supported PAS more as they feared his supposed reputation as an ultra-Malay.
“I know the Chinese dislike PAS, especially with their political ideology of wanting an Islamic country and so on so forth. Still, the Chinese voted for it because they disliked my reputation as an ultra. It was a choice between the devil and the deep blue sea and the Chinese made me the devil,” Dr Mahathir said after delivering a talk on “Malay Leadership in a Globalised Era” at the Grand Riverview Hotel.
The talk was organised by the Kelantan People’s Action Council (MTRK) headed by Datuk Paduka Ibrahim Ali, where among those present were MTRK patron Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, former Kok Lanas MP Tan Sri Abdullah Ahmad and former mentri besar Tan Sri Muhammad Yaakop.
Asked about PAS' continued rule of Kelantan, Dr Mahathir said that personally as an Umno member, he did not want Umno to lose but added that Umno’s focus must be on defending its political strength on the national front.
There was nothing new about PAS holding on to power in Kelantan as the Islamist party has done so since 1990.
“The power in this country comes from the federal level. Not the state governments. As for Kelantan, the people of the state must decide the future of Kelantan. It is left to the rakyat to decide.”
There must be an effort by them to ensure that the Federal Government pays more attention to the state, he said.
On the National Union of Journalists' (NUJ) call for Internet bloggers to be recognised, Dr Mahathir said that the Government must be willing to accept constructive criticism from certain blogging sites.
Of course, those who spread slander and inaccuracies should not have their websites recognised, he added.
“Certain bloggers are doing something good otherwise why would people want to read their sites. Registering of bloggers would be difficult as some may host their sites overseas, so it is difficult to control.”

Tun Dr. Mahathir asks to change weak leaders

from bigdog
http://bigdogdotcom.wordpress.com

As announced earlier, former Prime Minister and UMNO President Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad was in Kota Bahru today. He spoke at the Majlis Tindakan Rakyat Kelantan Annual Lecture series, which was held at the Grand Riverview Hotel ballroom. It started at almost four even though scheduled at 2.45pm.
Tun Dr. Mahathir reiterated his earlier calls in Johor Bahru, 10 February and Kulai, 29 March. UMNO should reject weak and ineffective leaders. He re-emphasized that UMNO should be united and remove leaders who are no longer effective to lead the Malays and the party, despite their past contributions are immensely priceless. Unity for the betterment in the future.
The examples illustrated again were Dato’ Onn Jaafar and Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, two great leaders of the Malays and UMNO, with landmark contributions, were eventually asked to go when their leadership worth no more relevance. Dato’ Onn, who managed to consolidate and galvanize all the Malay organizations into UMNO, managed to pressure the Malay Rulers at that time, provided them the strength that they were supported fully by the rakyat to reject Malayan Union. Tun Dr. Mahathir put forth that Dato’ Onn changed the landmark of Malay politics from the autocracy based on the traditional feudal system to democracy and rakyat for once had a say in the politics. The Malays or rakyat showed in full force they want the Rulers to not accept Malayan Union and the MacMichael Treaty.
So was in the case of Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra. He was rejected by the Malays when he paid lackluster attention to the Malays underdevelopment needs despite his invaluable contributions of providing leadership that managed to earn Malaya’s independence and later formation of Malaysia Tun Dr. Mahathir stressed, in both cases, UMNO became stronger and move a greater heights when the leaders were changed.
Tun Dr. Mahathir was very consistent in his emphasis that UMNO should be united and consolidated change ineffective and irrelevant leaders. Addressing this audience in Kota Bahru, a state self proclaimed as “Serambi Mekkah” (Corridor of Mecca), he used the metaphor of “Qurban” (sacrifice) to emphasize his case further. Qurban is an ibadah (a very noble deed) in the perspective of Islam. He interpreted Qurban as “reject something useful now for something better or beneficial in the future”. In a way, Tun Dr. Mahathir used the metaphor to sacrifice the current leadership for the betterment of the future.
Tun Dr. Mahathir actually used the phrase “Tolaklah pemimpin yang tidak berwibawa”. He also said “Negara ini tidak mungkin akan berjaya di era Globalisasi walaupun pada mulanya kita sudah mula berjaya”, his reference to the topic of the lecture when described how the nation’s developed wealth and once successful asset like Proton has been slowly allowed to digress and deteriorate.
He also touched on corruption. His interpretation that corruption is wrong from both ends. He reminded the audience that not to cry “corruption”, but list those who got these contracts through “corruption”. Kelantan UMNO liaisons chairman Annuar Musa’s statement in the media on the RM three billion contract for roads and other development project was taken into context on this angle.
He took a swipe from the tag line, “Leadership by example”. So if a leader called for continuous working, the leader should not fall asleep during work, including meeting. That drew laughter.
The phenomena of absolute refrained from criticizing leaders is not progressive. The ‘allergy’ towards Bloggers was also mentioned. The current administration’s foreign policy was touched. Tun Dr. Mahathir was critical Prime Minister Abdullah’s attempts to be closer to Singapore, Australia and even the George W. “Liar” Bush.
In the Q & A, he admitted he had made some mistakes in the past, including appointing the current leadership. Now, he said he is doing his best to make it right. Not all that he left have got be changed. He said he did some good things too, so those should be continued.
On the issue about the house, Tun Dr. Mahathir explained that he heard rumours about the RM 60 mil (Aus$ 25 mil) house in Perth belong to Prime Minister Abdullah. Later at Malaysiakini, his son in law Khairy Jamaluddin said the house was owned by Kamaluddin Abdullah. But when Malaysia Today did a search, he said the house owner is a Chinese woman. He asked “Siapa perempuan Cina itu dan apa hubungan dia dengan orang itu (PM Abdullah)?”. He also said that he is not to be blamed but Raja Petra should be blamed instead for the expose’.
Tun Dr. Mahathir explained that he does not hold anyone any grudge, even people who challenged him. In Anwar Ibrahim’s case, as the Prime Minister, he was convinced Anwar did something very unacceptable and decided that Anwar must go. So he did what he did, out of his resolution to the issue.
On the issue of capital control, Tun Dr. Mahathir explained we should be in control of our own currencies, not the free market. If the economy was strong enough, the country need not raise the RM but use the power of purchase to make the foreign suppliers reduce the prices of their goods.
The message is very clear and consistent. Tun Dr. Mahathir wanted UMNO members and the Malays change the present leadership in this country.

tunku : i am very sure what Tun had spoke earlier regarding the above, he had said that sometimes it is good for Umno to lose some seats in order to make UMNO work harder and the leaders won't be on 7 skies all the time.We need to sacrifice sometimes according to Tun.I agree with him on this issue 100%.Just look what happened at Ijok, millions ringgit spent to "buy votes".Najib said that all the by elections won because public is with Pak Lah.... are they really with him? To win with a 55-65% is not strong enough, and sometimes the 45% group can beat the 55% group. So if Umno to survive, it should get rid of the corrupt leaders.Just can't wait the GE.

Tun Dr Mahathir Testifies In Court

KOTA BAHARU, May 6 (Bernama) -- Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad Sunday appeared in open court for the first time, to testify in a trial of a businessman charged with spraying a certain substance at him and three others in an incident at the Pengkalan Chepa airport here in July last year.
He told a packed Magistrate's Court here that he did not actually see the person who had sprayed the substance but was informed later by one of his bodyguards, DSP Mazli Mazlan, that it was businessman Datuk Nik Sapeia Nik Yusof who had done so.
"Mazli told me that Nik Sapeia had sprayed the substance," said Dr Mahathir when testifying as the key witness in the trial of Nik Sapeia before Magistrate Azman Mustapha. His testimony took more than one hour.
Nik Sapeia, 53, is charged with inflicting harm on the former prime minister, former Pasir Mas Member of Parliament Datuk Ibrahim Ali, Mohd Nasir Muda and Suberi Sahidan by spraying a substance hazardous to the body at the airport on July 28.
The businessman, a former Umno leader in Kelantan and currently the People's Progressive Party (PPP) Kelantan chairman, is charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code and faces a maximum of three years jail or a fine or whipping or any two of the penalties, upon conviction.
Questioned by counsel Zainal Abidin Mustapha, who represented Nik Sapeia, Dr Mahathir said that prior to the (spraying) incident, a stout man in a black jacket attempted to prevent him from entering a Mitsubishi Pajero four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle, which was at the main entrance to the airport, from which he was to address a gathering.
"It was when I was trying to stand in the vehicle (which has a sunroof) to address the crowd that I experienced difficulty in breathing and my throat became sore," he added.
He also told the court that he was in Kelantan that day on an invitation by a non-governmental organisation to give a talk at a function.
"Ibrahim and Tan Sri Abdullah Ahmad invited me," he added.
Dr Mahathir said there were three others in the 4WD vehicle and they were Ibrahim, the driver and another person not known to him and that Nik Sapeia was believed to be near the vehicle.
He said that in the chaotic situation, one of his bodyguards pulled him by the hand and took him to another vehicle.
He said that while in the vehicle, he used a wet towel to wipe the substance off his face and that about 15 minutes later, his condition was back to normal.
To a question by Deputy Public Prosecutor Raja Rozela Raja Toran, who wanted to know why he did not seek medical treatment, Dr Mahathir said it was nothing unusual and also because he had never experienced the situation before.
"I did not regard it to be serious to require treatment because my personal physician, Datuk Dr Mohamad Nasir Muda, was with me," he added.
Asked about his relationship with Nik Sapeia, Dr Mahathir said he had known the businessman for about 20 years and regarded him as a friend.
He also said that he had agreed to get into Nik Sapeia's vehicle after addressing the crowd at the airport from the 4WD vehicle provided by Ibrahim.
Cross-examined by Zainal Abidin on the person who had sprayed the substance, Dr Mahathir said he thought it was by the police and that it was done for his safety when the situation went out of control.
"I thought it was to control the situation, but I did not see who actually did it," he added.
He also said that he did not lodge a police report on the incident because he felt that it was not something serious.
A policeman, Lance Corporal Mohd Sofian Husin, also testified today.
The hearing continues tomorrow.

Zainuddin Proposes Classification Of Web Bloggers

KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 (Bernama) -- Information Minister Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin said today Malaysia has to classify web bloggers as professionals and non-professionals as a mechanism to prevent misuse of blog sites.
He said he believed that professional bloggers were those who were more responsible in ensuring that their web content was based on the truth and not rumours.
"This classification will also facilitate the action to be taken against those found to have violated the country's laws," he told a press conference at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), here.
Zainuddin said certain people in the country had misused blog sites for their own interest and that of their groups, including by touching on matters enshrined in the Federal Constitution such as those of a religious nature and others that sparked uneasiness among the multiracial population.
"We have to control this. It is feared that these (blog sites) will be misused by those who have an agenda to spread slander. By right, there should be a mechanism to control this phenomenon, including by classifying web bloggers as professionals and non-professionals," he said.
Zainuddin said this was important in enabling the people to determine whether they could trust a certain matter and whether the blog content was the truth or a rumour that could cause discomfort or undermine unity.
"Placing trust in news based on rumours was a practice that existed before the advent of newspapers but the situation is different today when we have newspapers and television stations to disseminate information," he said.
The minister said that during his recent visit to France, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nice-Matin Press Group, Michel Camboul, had mentioned the need for the French government to classify bloggers and expressed concern over blog sites having an impact on newspaper circulation and the buying of advertisements in newspapers there.
Zainuddin said the Internet had yet to be widely used by the people in Malaysia and if blog sites became an alternative press that forced the shutdown of newspapers, the rural people who depended on newspapers would be denied the right to information.
He reminded web bloggers not to touch on matters that had been agreed upon by consensus by the multiracial population in the country, such as the special position and privileges of the Malays, the Rulers, and Islam, so as to maintain peace and harmony.

tunku : i believe if newspaper are more free and balance, it sales won't drop. the reason people surf the net for news is because the mainstream media are very much controlled on what they can report and what not, what to spin and what not.i agree with zam that web bloggers not to touch on matters that had been agreed upon by consensus by the multiracial population in the country, such as the special position and privileges of the Malays, the Rulers, and Islam, and also not to deny other races right, so as to maintain peace and harmony.but on political issue it should not control the news.

Oleh: HABIBAH OMAR
PUTRAJAYA 4 Mei – Biarpun mengalami demam panas, namun Mahathir Mohamad, anak yatim piatu di Pulau Nias, Sumatera, tetap gembira apabila menerima kunjungan idolanya, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.

tunku : hopefully Tun's visit to KB tomorrow will be smooth without such pepper spray incident occurs again.

Karpal Singh throws challenge to Samy Vellu

Kuala Lumpur (Bernama):DAP chairman Karpal Singh yesterday dared MIC president Datuk Seri Samy Vellu to stand against him or Opposition leader Lim Kit Siang in any constituency in the next General Election.
He threw the challenge barely a day after Samy Vellu, who is also Works Minister, had challenged Parti Keadilan rakyat (PKR) advisor, Anwar Ibrahim to stand against him (Samy Vellu) in any constituency in the next general election.
"Samy Vellu knows that the next GE will be called before April next year when Anwar becomes eligible to stand for election. As usual, Samy does not throw out challenges which are meaningful,"he said in a statement issued here yesterday.
"Is he prepared to take Lim Kit SIang or myself in any constituency? I dare him to accept this challlenge if he is man enough."said Karpal.

tunku : first of all, what can karpal do, NOTHING.he cannot be an effective MP at all.He can't walk by himself, how would he look after a constituency? The voters should look at this very seriously.back to the above statement, why you have to challenge samy vellu, comes the next GE just fight him in Sungai Siput if you and lim kit siang man enough.

Failure To Maintain Drainage System Cause Of Landslide, Says Samy Vellu

BUTTERWORTH, May 4 (Bernama) -- Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said today the landslide at Jalan Sultan Salahuddin in Kuala Lumpur was the result of failure to maintain the drainage system around the nearby Public Works Department (JKR) quarters.
He said the maintenance should have been carried out by Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) because the quarters were now occupied by officers and staff of the company.
"The two blocks were the quarters of JKR staff previously but they were taken over by Syabas.
"All the drains around the area are damaged and when it rained heavily the water seeped into the ground and the landslide occurred," he told reporters after opening the Penang MIC Convention, here.
He said the earth from the landslide had been cleared by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
"We want to know from Syabas why it did not clean up the area when the quarters were occupied by its officers and staff," he said.
Asked about the Sungai Nyiur Toll Plaza on the Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR) which was not in operation yet, Samy Vellu said the Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) would submit a proposal soon to the Cabinet for a reduction in the toll rate.
Toll collection at the plaza was deferred following appeals by the state government, residents in Seberang Jaya and surrounding areas and several non-governmental organisations not to impose toll until an alternative road was built.

tunku : why everytime something happen then only the reason being told, why not before something happen , control measure are taken? if PWD had notice it why they did not inform syabas to do something about it, and syabas too, where is your maintenance team, sack them all.

Contractors Association Asks Government To Adopt Open Tender System

PENANG, May 4 (Bernama) -- The government has been asked to adopt the open tender system in awarding its projects throughout the country.
Penang Master Builders and Building Material Dealers Association president Choong Khuat Seng said the system should cover all classes of contractors, with those near the project sites should be given priority.
"We used to get government projects in the 1980s and 1990s but the government stopped the open tender system and switched to the direct appointment method, making it difficult for contractors to get government contracts," he told reporters here today.
Choong further said the government should not control the prices of building materials if it wanted many contractors to bid for contracts.
If the prices were not controlled, the contractors could compete by offering low prices, he said.

tunku : open tender is a fairy tale, it appears on newspaper but normally the project has been awarded.just see what the contractor above said,"We used to get government projects in the 1980s and 1990s but the government stopped the open tender system and switched to the direct appointment method, making it difficult for contractors to get government contracts,". i thought nowadays the government is more transparent compare to Tun Mahathir's time, so what went wrong here ? it's show how transparent is the government.

Astro to raise subscription fees

KUALA LUMPUR: Astro All Asia Networks Plc (Astro) will raise monthly subscription fees, the television company said on Friday.
For existing customers the hike will be from June while for new customers the increase would be with immediate effect.
Astro, however, said it will give more package options.
The rise of about RM5 to RM10 is because of rising costs, including for programmes, it said.
Astro expects revenue to rise by 15% on an annualised basis.
Astro is largely owned by T. Ananda Krishnan, who is reported to be Malaysia's second wealthiest man.
Maxis Communications Berhad, a mobile phone operator is also largely owned by him and on Thursday Maxis said it is going to be privatised.
Ananda Krishnan is offering RM15.60 a share to buy out minority shareholders in Maxis.
The cash offer for the remaining 41% stake he does not own is 20% higher than the last traded price of RM13 in Malaysia’s leading cellular company.

tunku : everything is going up except salary/income.

Samy dares Anwar to take him on in next polls

Some Indians don't like me. They tell educated people not to respect me and some even call me a rascal. Despite that, I'm still well liked

- Samy at a by election. 19/07/02

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu has dared Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to stand against him in the next general election.
“We can fight in any constituency. He can come to Sungai Siput. I'm not scared,” he told reporters after the MIC central working committee meeting here yesterday.
He said that the Parti Keadilan Rakyat should accept the fact that MIC had won the recent Ijok by-election by a bigger majority and asked the opposition party to accept its defeat.
Samy Vellu, who is Works Minister, promised that the Barisan Nasional would fulfil all its pledges to ensure the well-being of the people.
He also warned that he would close down any MIC branch which failed to carry out its duties in the run up to the next general election.
MIC has 4,000 branches throughout the country, 19 state assembly seats and nine parliamentary seats.
Barisan Youth chairman Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, at a different function, said the movement would conduct a post mortem of the Ijok polls to assess the level of support for the coalition, especially among the Chinese, in preparation for the general election.

tunku : if anwar is a "jantan" he should contest in kepala batas, but i bet he won't as he's not "jantan". Kudos to samy, he had showed that he is "jantan".

Tun Mahathir : Success of nation rests on its people

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 (Bernama) -- The progress of a nation is determined not by the wealth of its natural resources but by the quality of its human resources, former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today.
He said quality human resources which subscribe to noble values such as discipline, trust, diligence, sincerity, self-pride and high degree of knowledge would propel the progress of a nation although it may be poor in terms of natural resources.
"For example, the countries of the Persian Gulf were rich in oil since ancient times but they remained poor because they did not have the necessary human resources.
"If not for the foreigners who came along with their capabilities, the people of the Persian Gulf would have continued to be poor fishermen," he said in a lecture on "Human Resources Development in National Development" at the Syiah Kuala University in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The text of his speech was faxed to Bernama here.
Earlier, Dr Mahathir received an honorary doctorate from the university for his leadership as the Father of Modern Malaysia and for the concept of economic development he had introduced.
Elaborating on the attributes necessary for quality human resources, Dr Mahathir said a disciplined people would be able to control their desires and self-interests because they abide by the law and follow the rules.
"The profit to be derived from abuse of power may be big and quick but it is not secure. A community of indisciplined people will not progress. In the end, those who are not disciplined will feel the disadvantages of such a community," he said.
Dr Mahathir said a community with self-pride would not resort to doing bad or unlawful things.
"We will not take what is rightfully not ours; we will not steal or accept bribes. We will not abuse our authority. More than that, we will try to do the best, including in our work," he said.
He said self-pride taught human beings to accept their weaknesses and not fear making mistakes, and at the same time it taught them to improve themselves.
"So long as we do not admit our mistakes, so long as we do not admit we have our weaknesses, so long as we are not prepared to improve ourselves, we will fail to develop the human resources that can develop the country," he said.
Dr Mahathir said that to become a developed nation, the people should discard the conservative culture for a progressive culture of wanting to improve something good without damaging it.
"A society or nation that is conservative, meaning it does not prefer change, may not progress as one that is progressive. While a conservative society wishes to retain the old methods and old standards, a progressive one prefers to pursue those that are better and more sophisticated," he said.
A country, to be progressive, must have an efficient administration based not only on noble values but also the capacity to protect members of its society, he said.
Only in this way can the country achieve economic and political stability which can contribute to the process of national development
, he added.

Malaysia-Australia Ties Strong, Says Abdullah

MELBOURNE, May 3 (Bernama) -- Relations between Malaysia and Australia have continued to remain strong despite them having differing opinions on certain political issues, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said here today.
These political issues, however, did not interfere with other aspects of the bilateral relations between Kuala Lumpur and Canberra, he said when replying to a question from an Australian reporter on relations between the two countries.
Abdullah spoke to reporters after jointly opening the "Nyonya Kebaya: Women's Costumes From Malaysia" exhibition with Janette Howard, wife of Australian Prime Minister John Howard, at the Immigration Museum, here.
Relations between Malaysia and Australia were strained under former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who is claimed to have berated Australia as a racist lackey of a culturally-imperalistic United States. The situation worsened when the then Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating called Dr Mahathir a recalcitrant in 1993.
The bilateral relations improved after Abdullah took over as prime minister in 2003, and made the first official visit by a Malaysian prime minister to Australia after 21 years. The visit was reciprocated by Australian Prime Minister John Howard in November last year.
Asked whether he was meeting with Howard, Abdullah said "Howard has indicated to see me."
On whether he was consciously trying to improve ties with Howard, Abdullah said: "Whatever we do, we must be conscious. If you are not conscious of what you are doing, it will not turn out to be good."
Asked whether former Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was finished as a politician after his Parti Keadilan Rakyat lost in the Ijok state by-election recently, Abdullah said he was not a force.

tunku : yea, let us put our policies, dignity aside and just be "yes sir" to others.malaysia has made tremendous achievement in australia since 2003, for example a nasi kandar shop opened there recently and now kebaya exhibition.

An excuse to Australia

Inaugural Nyonya Kebaya Exhibition To Be Opened Thursday

MELBOURNE, May 2 (Bernama) - The inaugural Nyonya Kebaya exhibition at the Immigration Museum here to be jointly officiated by Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Australia's Prime Minister John Howard's wife, Jannette tomorrow (Thursday), will not only showcase the rich cultural heritage of Malaysia, but also expose the assimilation of the Chinese into the Malay culture in the 19th Century.
Immigration Museum manager Padmini Sebastian said it was an experience that could be shared with Australians since they never had such an exposure and thus would benefit them.
She said the exhibition would not only focus on the intricate designs of the kebaya, the traditional costumes for `Peranakan' and the Malays but also give Australians a glimpse of Peranakan culture.
"It is a very important exhibition for Victoria and also Australia as it provides new information and knowledge," she told Bernama here Wednesday.
The four-month exhibition organised by Yayasan Budi Penyayang Malaysia (Penyayang) and assisted by Immigration Museum, Victoria, also promotes cross cultural exchange between the museum staff and Malaysians in their effort to put up the first ever show on Nyonya Kebaya in Down Under.
Sebastian said the close cooperation with Penyayang had made the exhibition possible in just seven months compared to the usual 18 months needed in setting up such an exhibition.
The chief executive officer of Penyayang, Leela Mohd Ali, said the exhibition themed "Nyonya Kebaya: Women's Costume From Malaysia", where Abdullah's late wife, Datin Seri Endon Mahmood's kebaya collection would be featured, had also received strong support from Malaysian immigrants staying in Australia, especially those in Melbourne.
A group of 22 Malaysians residing in Australia will be singing Malaysian songs such as Rasa Sayang Eh, Enjit-Enjit Semut and Gelang Sipaku Gelang at the opening tomorrow where the women will be in their kebaya, while some of the women will also be modelling some of the exhibits, she said.
Penyayang show consultant Baba Peter Wee said Penyayang efforts in promoting the rich heritage of the Nyonya Kebaya, especially in the past four years had been "fantastic."
Wee, 60, who has been involved in promoting the Peranakan culture for more than 20 years, hoped that the exhibition in Melbourne, a city rich in culture, arts and fashion, would spur the fashion designers in Australia to adapt the kebaya design in their creation.
This would spur the growth of kebaya from being the traditional dress for Malaysian, Singapore and Indonesian women to the international fora.
Lee Foundation States of Malaysia has been the main sponsor of the exhibition, while Leighton Malaysia and Leighton Australia had been partly sponsoring in the construction of the set for the exhibition besides supervising it.
This is the fourth showcase of the Nyonya Kebaya after it was first held at the National Art Gallery a few years ago. The last one was at the Asian Civilisation Museum, Singapore.

tunku : do a prime minister need to go to australia and officiate a kebaya exhibition? Have any prime minister did that? Unless he's going there on official visit or working visit, this kebaya thing is in the agenda then it's different matter, but to go just for kebaya is just to much, there millions of important thing to look after here in malaysia.if a high official from malaysia needs to be there is either, tengku adnan(tourism minister) or rais yatim(heritage minister).

Blogging As A New Media

NUJM Urges Govt To Acknowledge Blogging As A New Media

KUALA LUMPUR, May 2 (Bernama) -- The National Union of Journalists Malaysia (NUJM) is urging the government to acknowledge the existence of internet citizen reporting and blogging as a new media for disseminating information.
Its president, Norila Mohd Daud said this online phenomenon had made great impact in the country as an alternative information source on current issues affecting the public.
"The usage of internet and the concept of the uncensored `borderless world' have made information more easily accessible to anyone. As such, any abuses committed by public officials can be immediately exposed on the internet," she said in a statement issued here, in conjunction with the International Press Freedom Day which falls tomorrow.
She said it was also in line with the government's mission in ensuring greater accountability and transparency, as well as improving its delivery system.
At the same time, she said that the growth of this new media channel had influenced mainstream media and changed the current journalism landscape.
"In view of this latest development, NUJM feels that the government should accord greater freedom to the local media by amending restrictive laws such as the Printing Presses and Publications Act, and Official Secret Act (OSA)," she said.
NUJM, she said, was of the opinion that the enactment of a Freedom of Information Act could improve the flow of information between the government agencies, the media and the public.

tunku : well thousand time had been said, let the information flows freely, we are smart enough to evaluate it.

Chinese votes for opposition??

PETALING JAYA: MCA will look seriously into why there was a swing in the Chinese votes against Barisan Nasional in the Ijok by-election.
Party president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said several factors led to the swing in the votes, including their dissatisfaction with the service provided in the past as well as several sensitive national issues.
He said the Chinese in Ijok told MCA campaigners that since the 2004 general election, they had also been unhappy with certain statements which had hurt their feelings.
“We tried to explain to voters the statements and views that created unhappiness in the community did not reflect the top leadership’s stand.
“But some people still could not forget these issues,” he told reporters after attending the Wesak Day celebration at Kwan Inn Teng temple here yesterday.
However, Ong expressed his confidence that the new assemblyman K. Parthiban would serve the Ijok community well.
Ong said the party would continue to work hard to win back the Chinese votes.
He revealed that in the Chinese-majority Pekan Ijok, Barisan obtained 21 more votes than Parti Keadilan Rakyat and won in Pekan Berjuntai Bestari (South) and Pekan Berjuntai Bestari (North) by 562 votes.
“No doubt there was a certain extent of swing in the votes but as a whole, Barisan still obtained a substantial number of the Chinese votes.
“The result of the by-election showed that a large number of the new villagers who stayed in Ijok still voted for Barisan – these people still have confidence in the ruling coalition,” he added.
Ong said they would go down to the ground and listen to the people’s views and opinions.
“We are paying attention to the voice of the community. We will continue to bring their problems, views and feedback to the Barisan leadership so that their needs will be attended to,” he added.
In KLANG, MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said the swing in votes in Ijok did not reflect the overall sentiment of all the Chinese in the country.
He said there were some factors that could have caused the swing in Chinese votes.
“First was the unsolved local problems that had dragged on for years including drainage, land, lamppost and street problems.
“People became frustrated to see things settled when there was a by-election. They felt the local and state governments were not committed in this aspect,” he said after launching the Klang Pantai Teochew Association building.
Dr Chua said MCA wanted to thank the voters who supported Barisan.
He said the party would not be complacent and would continue to work for the people there.
In PENANG, Gerakan acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said the Prime Minister gave a positive suggestion to the two parties to further understand the reason behind the swing in Chinese votes.
“He did emphasise to us to approach the Chinese community to understand them better and at the same time continue to serve them well,” he said after attending the Wesak Day celebration at Malaysia Buddhist Association.
He added that they had also been consistently providing feedback to the prime minister and other Barisan leaders on the feelings of the Chinese and other races.
In the Ijok by-election on Saturday, Barisan candidate Parthiban defeated PKR’s Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim by a majority of 1,850 votes.

tunku: well chinese voters are not traditional voters, they will vote whom they like, may it be from BN or opposition. To them its all about survival. We have seen this in Sarawak state election where bn lost most of the chinese majority area. If the economy is really GOOD than i believe they will throw strong support to bn, but nowadays everyone struggling to survive, although on paper the economy is good but in reality it's not. Ask any tom dick and harry , how is their business, everyone complaining.pak lah should do much better than what he's doing now to make our economy really GOOD.If he can't do it than it is best for him to resign or else next GE we will see lots of bn seats will go to the opposition.

Abdullah, Hsien Loong May Dwell On Bilateral Issues - Syed Hamid

KOTA TINGGI, May 1 (Bernama) -- Though no fixed agenda has been set, issues on bilateral ties may be discussed in talks between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his Singapore counterpart Lee Hsien Loong in Langkawi in mid-May, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said today.
"It's up to the prime minister to decide on the issues to be raised in his meeting with Lee," he told reporters before attending the Kota Tinggi Umno division meeting. Syed Hamid is the division head.
Asked whether the two prime ministers would dwell on the outstanding issues between the two neighbours, Syed Hamid said it was up to the two leaders.
He said the May 15 meeting comes at a time when bilateral ties between the two countries were at its best.
Besides Lee, the Singapore delegation to the one-day meeting would comprise foreign, transport and defence ministers, among others, he said.
He said Malaysia often held informal meetings such as this with Asean members. It had held similar meetings with Indonesia, Thailand and Brunei.
As to the overlapping claims on Pulau Batu Putih by both Malaysia and Singapore referred to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague, Netherlands, Syed Hamid said the hearing is expected to begin in November.
"We hope the issue can be settled soon. Both countries will accept ICJ's verdict on the dispute," he said.
Syed Hamid said his ministry was the lead agency assisting staff of the Attorney-General's Chambers and Queen's Council to gather documents and evidence to prove that the island, located not far from Pengerang, Johor, was Malaysia's.
Collecting of documents and information was in the final stages, he said.
Syed Hamid said Malaysia's team to fight the case in the ICJ would be led by Tan Sri Abdul Kadir Mohamad, the Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister.
He will be assisted by lawyers who are experts in international laws, he added.

tunku : well if the bilateral ties between the two countries are at its best, hope that pak lah can resolve all the outstanding issue with singapore, i hope quality time spend during this one day meeting, hopefully without GOLF.It's high time for malaysia to stand up and get it;s RIGHT.

Ananda Krishnan to buy out telco Maxis

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysian tycoon Ananda Krishnan plans to buy out the country's largest mobile operator, the firm said on Monday, in a deal that could be worth at least $5 billion.
Maxis gave no reason for the buyout plan but industry analysts speculated that Krishnan, the country's second richest man after Robert Kuok, might want to relist Maxis offshore and raise foreign capital to fund international expansion.
Maxis, which faces a price war and a maturing market at home, is expanding into larger and less developed Asian markets like Indonesia and India to drive growth.
"It is a surprise move," said Cheah King Yoong, head of investment research at Malaysia's SJ Securities. "But I would not be surprised if Maxis is listed overseas."
Chong Tjen San, a telecoms analyst at Malaysia's Aseambankers, said the buyout plan could be a first step toward raising money to fund major investments in India and Indonesia.

"The privatisation of Maxis could allow Ananda Krishnan to more freely utilise his own wealth should the two overseas ventures require more capital than what Maxis' balance sheet could comfortably allow in the short term," Chong said.
Krishnan-controlled firm Usaha Tegas Sdn Bhd, a major shareholder in Maxis, has notified the company that it and its affiliates will make an offer by Thursday, Maxis said.
Krishnan held an indirect interest of 47.05 percent in Maxis as of April last year, according to company data. At the current share price, a buyout bid for the remainder of about 53 percent would cost around 17.4 billion ringgit ($5.1 billion)
It would be the largest deal unveiled in Malaysia since three plantations firms signed an $8.9 billion merger in January.
Usaha Tegas "has indicated that, barring unforeseen circumstances, the notice of takeover offer will be served on the company on or before 3 May 2007", Maxis said in a brief satement.
Maxis owns India's Aircel and Indonesia's PT Natrindo Telepon Selular, both unlisted. It has said it plans to spend $450 million this year on its Indian operations.
A local fund manager said he expected Krishnan to offer no more than 10 percent premium over Maxis' last traded price of 13 ringgit for the remaining shares.
"The stock is trading around its fair value, so I don't think there will be a big premium in the (offer) price," he said.
Maxis stock, which was suspended from trade before the company statement, has climbed nearly 50 percent in the past 12 months, outperforming the wider market by about 7 percent.
Krishnan, a former oil trader, also controls Malaysian pay-TV operator Astro All-Asia Networks Plc and gambling and leisure firm Tanjong Plc.
Shares in Astro jumped on speculation that it, too, could be bought out by Krishnan, dealers said. Astro shares were up 6.3 percent at 5.10 ringgit by 0321 GMT. Tanjong also jumped in early trade but fell back to stand at 17.00 ringgit, down 1.2 percent.

Umno Will Not Readmit Anwar, Says Sec-Gen

KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 (Bernama) -- Umno will not readmit expelled former deputy president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Umno Secretary-General Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad said today.
He said this was decided by the party previously and there was no change to that decision.
"Now there is talk that Anwar may rejoin Umno. I wish to state that Umno will not accept Anwar. He will not be taken back into Umno," he told reporters after a meeting of the Umno Supreme Council, here.
Radzi, who is also Home Affairs Minister, said many quarters were mentioning the possibility of the former deputy prime minister rejoining Umno.
He said the matter was also discussed at today's meeting of the party's supreme council.
"There is talk that perhaps friends of Anwar in Umno will lobby for him to rejoin (Umno)," he said.
Radzi said the Umno Constitution 2002 stated clearly that whoever opposed the party would not be accepted back into the party ever.
Asked why Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, who had opposed Umno when he led Parti Melayu Semangat 46, was readmitted to Umno, Radzi said the situation was different because the party constitution had not been amended then.

tunku : so you are lucky radzi, you were readmitted back in umno.people like you should not be in umno.regarding anwar, the party constitution can be amended again to allow him to readmit and this can be done by the consent of MT.So i guess umno should made a new constitution specific for anwar that he will never be allowed to enter umno unless consent by 90% of umno members(just to be safe).

Welcome back Fidel Castro

Castro 'back in charge' of Cuba
30/04/2007

Cuban leader Fidel Castro is in charge again after undergoing intestinal surgery, according to friend and ally Hugo Chavez.
Castro has not been seen in public since before July 31, when he announced he had undergone surgery and provisionally ceded power to his younger brother Raul.
With Cuban officials giving increasing positive reports about Fidel Castro’s health, there has been speculation recently that he could soon be back in the public eye.
“Fidel is in charge. Fidel is in charge,” Chavez, the Venezuelan president, said yesterday, revealing that he received a “philosophical letter” from Castro the day before and that it ran to nearly 10 pages.
Speaking during a meeting of leftist leaders, Chavez laughed as he said that Bolivian President Evo Morales “is determined that Fidel will come out on May 1.”
“I think that Evo and Fidel have such a secret plan that even I don’t know what it is. I don’t dare to make comments,” Chavez said.
Since his surgery, Chavez has regularly offered updates on Castro’s health, while the 80-year-old leader has appeared periodically in photographs and videos released by the Cuban government.
Castro’s condition and exact ailment remain state secrets, but he is believed to suffer from diverticular disease, which can cause inflammation and bleeding in the colon.
Chavez said Castro’s health troubles have clearly forced him to slow down but that he has made a “real improvement” and is in an “extraordinary mental state.”
Chavez was speaking during a summit of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas, or ALBA, a bloc that involves left-leaning allies Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia, and promotes socialist trade initiatives and cooperation to counter US-backed free trade plans.
Castro’s government was represented at the summit by Vice President and Cabinet Secretary Carlos Lage.
“For eight months he has been fighting for his own life,” Lage said of Castro. “Today we can tell you that Fidel has won the fight for his life ... and now he is consolidating the victory, and for that reason he hasn’t been present here as all of us would have wanted.”
Lage and Chavez both said Castro has continued to play an active role behind-the-scenes.
“He is in charge. Fidel is the great helmsman of the ALBA,” Chavez said.
Chavez held Castro’s letter for the television camera, showing a firm signature that he called a clear sign of the Cuban leader’s improving heath.
“Fidel does impossible things,” Chavez said.

Another shooting spree in US

Fatal shooting at shopping mall
30/04/2007

At least two people were killed yesterday afternoon in a shooting at a US shopping centre, fire officials said.
The shooting occurred shortly before 4pm at the Ward Parkway shopping centre in Kansas City, police said.
"We have at least two fatalities, maybe more," said Joe Vitale, a fire department battalion chief.
Witnesses gave conflicting accounts of exactly where the shots were fired, and it was not immediately clear how the chaos began.
A window was shot out at a Starbucks coffee shop, but some witnesses said shots were fired near a Target store.
Aaron Washington, 34, a Target employee, said the shooting appeared to happen near the store’s entrance into the mall.
He said he was coming back from lunch when he heard gunshots, and saw one man holding his hand over his eye.
"The man had apparently been shot," Washington said. Authorities evacuated a cinema in the shopping centre and the facility was shut down.
Surrounding streets were also closed.
