Dr Chan Dismisses Rumour MCA Coming To Sarawak

KUCHING, June 4 (Bernama) - Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) president Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam Monday dismissed rumours that the MCA would spread its wings to Sarawak soon.
"They (MCA leaders) are not so irresponsible and would not secretly do this," said Dr Chan who is also Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister.
"It's just a rumour, especially when the parliamentary election is coming," he told reporters after a flag-raising ceremony to mark SUPP's 48th anniversary held at the party headquarters here Monday.
Recently, local Chinese dailies widely reported that MCA would be spreading its wings to Sarawak through a Chinese clan association.
On UMNO, Dr Chan said the group that claimed to be promoting the party and called themselves the Jawatankuasa Penaja UMNO Negeri Sarawak (JPUNS) had not registered with the Registrar of Societies (ROS).
He said UMNO headquarters in Kuala Lumpur had clarified to the state Barisan Nasional (BN) that the Umno promoters in Sarawak had yet to receive any "green light" to set up branches here.
"The group has not registered with ROS. It's illegal. Now, the villagers are angry and have removed the UMNO flags. They are not welcome," he said.
UMNO flags had started appearing in the state since the JPUNS opened its office here last Sept and now there are about 70 UMNO branches throughout Sarawak with the biggest in Kuching.
When asked about independent Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa's application to join SUPP, Dr Chan said the party's central working committee (CWC) would decide on the matter at its next meeting scheduled within the next weeks.
Last month, Dr Chan said that Dr Rayong had submitted his application to join SUPP during the recent State Legislative Assembly sitting.
In the 2006 state election, Dr Rayong defeated SUPP candidate Jonathan Krai Pilo by a slim majority of 426 votes in a straight fight.

tunku : first it was heard that umno is coming to sarawak, now mca, maybe after this we'll hear gerakan, mic will come to sarawak. Why not ? if keadilan, dap, pkr can enter sarawak why not others? after all george chan(who is hated by chinese nowadays is sarawak) said arrogantly that umno is not welcome in sarawak.what about supp, supp now is not welcome by their own people any longer. they had lost 9 seats to dap/pkr.let see what will happen in the general election.
