S'pore To Benefit More If KL-S'pore Route Is Open Up Before 2008
PETALING JAYA, Feb 26 (Bernama) -- Singapore will benefit more if the lucrative KL-Singapore flight route is opened up ahead of the Asean road map on "open sky" policy timeline of 2008, said Malaysia Airlines managing director Idris Jala.
This is because of the disparity in the flight frequencies of Singapore's Changi Airport as opposed to KLIA in Sepang.
"If you open it earlier, indications are that we feel that Singapore will win because Changi has 4,000 flights on a weekly basis as opposed to KLIA's 2,000," he told reporters after announcing the national carrier's 2006 financial results here Monday.
Idris said there was a magnetic pull in terms of connectivity in Singapore.
"Connectivity is a very important point in a role of hub. If you have a very high magnetic pull in Singapore, that is a kind of difficult (for us). Hence, it was very important (for us) to develop the hub-and-spoke model this year quickly," Idris said.
Malaysia Airlines, he said, was working hand in hand with Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd.
"You can see airlines coming into KLIA which will give greater connectivity and enhance its magnetic pull. So, it is our interest to stick to the timeline," he said these when asked on the impact of opening the KL-Singapore route earlier.
