Desperate PAS To Open Door For Non-muslim Leaders If The Need Arise

SHAH ALAM, Feb 28 (Bernama) -- A PAS Supreme Council member claimed the party was willing to accept non-Muslims into positions as high as deputy president should the need arise.
Dzulkefly Ahmad who is also the Kuala Selangor Member of Parliament (MP) believes the prospect was possible as it could address the change for intellectual renewal and withstand the challenges of time.
"Maybe the need is not there now but if put forward, we are ready to discuss the possibility at the PAS Muktamar.
"However, this depends on the need and necessity of the party," he said at a news conference after participating in a forum entitled "Mengapa Undi Melayu Pecah" at Karangkraf Complex here Tuesday.
At the forum, the moderator Dr Maszlee Malik, a lecturer from Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA), had asked Dzulkefly whether PAS was ready to emulate the footsteps of the Egypt's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, who appointed Coptic Christian intellectutal Rafiq Habib as its vice-president.

tunku: never knew that pas can go so low but it is not a surprise statement by its leaders as they have changed a lot lately. in 5 years time i guess pas will not be a islamic base party anymore. hope the Muslims in pas could realize this and quit the party asap. pas is demonized. later they will come out with the statement non muslim can be the pm of this country just to fish for vote.

PAS Will Never Recognise Israel but will remain with Anwar, Says Nik Aziz

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 22 (Bernama) -- PAS Spiritual Leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has reiterated that the party will never recognise "the forbidden state of Israel".
He said it is an appropriate stand considering that Israel came about by way of the denial of the rights of Muslims and deprivation of the rights of the Palestinian people.
It is forbidden to accept the existence of Israel, all the more when the Israeli authorities engage in the endless torture and killing of the Palestinian people, including children, women and the elderly, he said in a statement published on the party's website, www.pas.org.my.
"We leave it to (Opposition Leader) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to accept this stand of PAS," he said.
Nik Aziz's statement comes in the wake of his meeting with Anwar, who is Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor, over the latter's statement expressing support for "all efforts to protect the security of the state of Israel".

tunku : it is obvious that anwar did made the statement of “I support all efforts to protect the security of the state of Israel”.he is not suing WSJ, he is not suing local media as they all did report the truth.now that nik aziz had confirmed it too by saying that they leave it to anwar to accept the stand of pas. this shows clearly he did mean what he said. the question here now is pas. why is pas still with anwar? pas said they will never recognize the state of israel but still working hand in hand with anwar. if anwar becomes the pm and made a policy to protect the security of israel what can pas do with less majority of members in the government? this clearly shows that pas is together with anwar in whatsoever.

Anwar says Nik Aziz understands Israel statement

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who met Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat on Tuesday to explain his controversial statement on Israel, said the PAS spiritual leader understood his stand on the issue.
The Opposition leader also said he would not sue The Wall Street Journal over the report "as it was not wrong".
However, Anwar accused the mainstream media of deliberately misconstruing his statement.
"Nik Aziz heard and listened to my explanation. I understand PAS' strong and clear views on the issue of Israel.
"I feel good now that I have explained and cleared any doubt there was over the statement made (on Israel)," he said.
Anwar met Nik Aziz and party information chief Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man for an hour.

tunku : as mentioned earlier, it's just over like that. both are happy and anwar will not have to sue WSJ as it reported the truth and nik aziz is "charmed" by anwar that he had to accept whatever anwar said to him. it is all drama.

Nik Aziz And Anwar Meeting Tuesday - Mahfuz

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 21 (Bernama) -- The much anticipated meeting between Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Nik Aziz Nik Mat and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in relation to the opposition leader's controversial statement supporting Israel's security actions, is scheduled for Tuesday.
On Feb 13, Nik Aziz urged Anwar to retract his statement if he had actually made it or sue The Wall Street Journal if they had got it wrong.
PAS vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar confirmed the meeting during a press conference at the party headquarters today, but gave no details on its location and time.
Questioned as to what PAS would do if Anwar failed to retract the statement, Mahfuz said, "We'll wait for the outcome of the meeting."

tunku : the outcome of the meeting will be nik aziz will say that he is satisfied with anwar's explanation and that's it. before this pas's majlis syura demanded an explanation from anwar regarding his remarks of supporting israel's security.by right anwar should meet them and explain not to nik aziz alone. and if anwar said that the wall street journal has twisted his statement, when is he going to sue them as demanded by nik aziz earlier?this is just a drama played by those two jokers.

EPF Announces 6 Per Cent Dividend For 2011, The Highest In A Decade

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 20 (Bernama) -- The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) today announced a dividend of six per cent for its members for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2011, an increase of 20 basis points from 5.8 per cent for 2010.
Chairman Tan Sri Samsudin Osman said the rate, the highest in 10 years, would involve payment of RM24.47 billion, from RM21.61 billion for the previous year.
Based on previous reports, the highest dividend announced by EPF was 8.5 per cent, paid to subscribers from 1983 to 1987.
Samsudin said 2011 marked another commendable achievement for EPF, despite the challenging investment landscape, by posting a gross investment income of RM27.24 billion, an increase of 13.18 per cent from 2010.
"It is the strongest performance since 2001, an affirmation of our long term and prudent investment strategy, combined with continuous efforts by our investment team," he said in a statement here today.
While the fixed income investments provided stable returns, Samsudin said, the EPF's overall performance was contributed by the gains in both the domestic and global public listed equities and management programmes.
As at Dec 31, 2011, he said EPF total investment assets continued to register healthy growth of 6.52 per cent to RM469.22 billion, from RM440.52 billion in 2010.
"This rise is primarily contributed by the positive net annual contributions from members and employers, as well as consistent and encouraging investment performance," he added.
He said equities formed the largest income contributor at RM13.29 billion or 48.81 per cent of the total income from investments.
"This is followed by loans and bonds, Malaysian government securities and money market instruments, which contribute RM7.54 billion, RM5.63 billion and RM656.36 million, respectively.
The balance of RM115.41 million or 0.43 per cent is from property and other miscellaneous income," he added.
Samsudin said EPF had gradually and cautiously moved into higher yielding assets within tolerable risk limits.
"The strategy seems to bode well, in advance of our expectation as we managed to out-perform the current fixed deposit and interest rates," he added.
He said one of the highlights of EPF investment activities in 2011 was the completion of the joint acquisition (with UEM Group) of Plus Expressway Berhad through co-investment vehicle, PLUS Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
"In addition, we have also expanded our global investment exposure in properties, as well as equities and Sukuks.
"These expansions are in line with our investment objective and strategy guided by our Strategic Asset Allocation and Risk Management Framework," he added.
He said EPF members could check their account statement for the crediting of the 2011 dividend either through the EPF kiosks, counters or i-Akaun, from tomorrow.

PR did not demand Anwar's retraction on Israel

KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Keadilan Rakyat secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution said during the Pakatan Rakyat's presidential council meeting on Monday, none of Pas leaders present demanded for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to retract or take legal action against the Wall Street Journal over his statement on supporting "all efforts to protect the security of Israel."
Saifuddin told The Mole although Anwar’s statement in the WSJ was discussed during the meeting, they have not decided anything yet.
“We had our meeting yesterday (on Monday) and the leaders have already discussed the statement. We will wait for the response from Anwar himself ,” he said adding the party’s de facto leader is abroad and scheduled to return on Wednesday.
“None of Pas representatives made any demands during the meeting similar to that made by Pas’ Majlis Syura (Council of Religious Elders),” he added.
The Machang MP said PKR will be issuing an official statement regarding Pas’ demands and Anwar’s statement after their monthly political bureau meeting today.
Pas’ spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat had urged Anwar to retract his statement as reported by Wall Street Journal.
In a news report in Pas’ newsletter Harakah, Nik Aziz reportedly said, “if it had been wrongly reported or conveyed a different meaning, we advise Anwar Ibrahim to take legal action against WSJ to clear his name.”
PKR Wanita head Zuraida Kamaruddin also said that Anwar is expected to issue a press statement soon regarding the matter.
“I think it is best to let Anwar himself to verify the matter,” she said, declining to comment further.
The Mole had previously reported that Pas leaders are still seeking clarification from Anwar regarding his controversial remarks on protecting the state of Israel.
Meanwhile DAP leaders had decided to keep mum over the matter, regarding it as ‘highly sensitive.’
Seputeh MP Teresa Kok said in a text message, “I don’t want to comment on this highly sensitive issue.”
Only its national vice chairman Dr Tan Seng Giaw acknowledged that Anwar’s statement had brought an important point of discussion for people.
Nonetheless in a text message reply, Dr Tan said, “we (DAP) have supported the United Nations resolution on Palestine and Israel.’’
“The rights of all parties must be protected including the rights of Palestinians to their territories before the 1967 war.’’
“There must be a peaceful solution for Palestine,” he added.

Nik Aziz, PAS' Ulama Council Ask Anwar To Retract Statement On Israel

KOTA BAHARU, Feb 14 (Bernama) -- Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has urged Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to retract his purported statement that he (Anwar) supported all actions taken to safeguard the security of Israel.
Nik Aziz, who is also PAS spritual leader, said PAS' Ulama Council (Council of Relgious Elders) which met in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, decided that Anwar should retract the statement which was carried by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
"If The Wall Street Journal was inaccurate in reporting what he (Anwar) said, then we hope he will sue the newspaper," he told reporters after attending an event here Monday night.
Nik Aziz said he had sent a letter to this effect to Anwar.
"As friends, it is our duty to correct each other, and if see something not right with our friends, then we should tell them so and vice versa. This what Islam teaches us.
"So I have done my part as a friend and as PAS spiritual leader in asking him to retract his statement on Israel," said Nik Aziz.
In a separate statement, Nik Aziz said the security of an illegal state like Israel was not the responsibility of Arabs or Muslims at large because the state itself was formed on the back cruel policies.
He added that PAS was not in favour of the two-state solution to the Palestinian problem.

Federal Government To Itemise Aid Given To Kelantan Over The Years - Mustapa

KOTA BAHARU, Feb 12 (Bernama) -- The federal government is to itemise its financial allocations to the Kelantan government over the years to enable the people know the facts, Kelantan Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said today.
He said the people of Kelantan have yet to get a clear picture of the federal government's assistance to the PAS-led state government to develop the state.
"The people of Kelantan do not know the details of the federal government financial allocations to the state all this while. This is a major thing that we will explain to them soon.
"Every year, more than 30 per cent of the allocation is used for state administrative purposes and 70 per cent for development expenses. The people should know this," he said after chairing a meeting of the Kelantan Federal Development Action Council at the Federal Development Department, here.
Mustapa, who is international trade and industry minister, said the move to itemise the aid is purely to counter the allegations of the opposition that the federal government has been mean to the state government in terms of financial allocation.
He said the people should also know that the federal government has built a water treatment plant at Pintu Geng here at a cost of RM52 million.
He also said that the federal government has allocated RM100 million to build state roads in Kelantan.
Mustapa refuted opposition claims that the federal government has failed to implement several projects in the state, saying that the Sultan Ismail Petra bridge project was delayed in implementation and not abandoned.
"The federal government will ensure that each project it undertakes does not fail but there are valid reasons for any delay in implementation," he said.

Khalid: Hasan wanted to be Selangor MB

SHAH ALAM: Sacked PAS leader Datuk Dr Hasan Ali had actively sabotaged Pakatan Rakyat as he wanted to be Selangor Mentri Besar, alleged Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad.
He claimed then Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had agreed to appoint Dr Hasan as Mentri Besar if PAS and Umno had formed a unity state government right after the 2008 general election.
"There was about 10 days before the Mentri Besar was sworn in.
"A meeting was arranged to meet Umno, and I went on behalf of Dr Hasan under the instruction of the party leadership to meet Abdullah and (former Mentri Besar) Dr Khir Toyo.
"(PAS secretary-general) Datuk Mustafa Ali was with me," Khalid told reporters at his office here Thursday.

Pak Lah Leaves It To Najib To Choose Kepala Batas Candidate

KEPALA BATAS, Feb 8 (Bernama) -- Former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said he left it to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to decide whether to renominate him to defend the Kepala Batas parliamentary seat in the 13th general election.
"What is important is not only to ensure that Barisan Nasional retains the seat but also to get better results," he said after presenting RM2.2 million incentives for revenue growth to 1,803 farmers here.
Abdullah, who is Member of Parliament for Kepala Batas since 1978 and stepped down as prime minister three years ago, said he would continue to head the Kepala Batas Umno division until the next party's election.
Asked about sabotage occurring in the Kepala Batas Umno division, he said he was not sure the extent of the problem.

PAS wants to stop Valentine’s Day celebration

PETALING JAYA: With Valentine's Day due in a week, PAS has again pledged to put a stop to the celebration.
Its leaders, including PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan at-Tantawi, said it must be stopped as it would lead to immoral activities.
His deputy Nik Abduh Nik Aziz wants the Government to place anti-Valentine Day's advertisements on television to discourage Muslims from celebrating the event.
“Every year we join forces with various Muslim non-governmental organisations to create awareness that celebrating Valentine's Day is against the Islamic syariat,” he said.
“We do not want the celebration to become a trend among Muslims,” he said, adding that ulamas worldwide forbid Muslims from celebrating the day.
“The best way to disseminate the message is through television.
“And the Government can easily do that as it controls the mainstream media,” he added.
Nik Abduh, a son of PAS spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, said the movement had yet to meet to discuss its anti-Valentine's Day campaign this year.
Nasrudin said the movement was not out to punish those celebrating Valentine's Day.
“We are also not trying to assume the role of moral police. We are not enforcers.
“But, we want to help save the youngsters from falling into the Valentine's Day trap that promotes immoral activities,” he said.
Ahead of Valentine's Day every year, PAS Youth and various Muslim activist groups campaigned against young couples having unlawful sex and distribute leaflets to university students warning them against celebrating the day.
Islamic officials in Malaysia isued a fatwa in 2005 that the day is associated with “elements of Christianity”.
Last year, religious authorities arrested more than 100 Muslim couples over the celebration ban.
The roots of Valentine's Day celebrated on Feb 14 go back to ancient times, when people honoured an early Christian martyr named St Valentine.
It is traditionally a day when lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering sweets and chocolates and sending greeting cards. These days, they also use e-mails, Facebook and Twitter.
Many couples become engaged or get married on this day. For others, it is a day to fall in love.
MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said PAS had no right to impose its values on others.
“This is a democratic multi-racial country. We can't stop people from celebrating whatever event they wish to celebrate,” he said.
“Commercially driven events depend on supply and demand, PAS Youth should not interfere,” Wee said, adding that Chap Goh Mei was the Chinese version of Valentine's Day.
Kedah Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang challenged Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to check PAS Youth.
“Anwar should take action if he wants to show Pakatan Rakyat embraces moderation,” he said, adding that the coalition should take action against PAS Youth.
“It is not an issue with Muslims, but PAS Youth never fails to make an issue out of it,” he said.


tunku : now tantawi and few others will have to show something to their followers that they are islamic especially after hasan ali was sacked from the party. i wonder what would khalid samad's and other top leaders in pas view on this matter? are they with tantawi or would say that its tantawi's and nik abduh's personal view? and most important is what is the stand of dap and pkr on this matter? if they don't agree with this, tantawi or pas can shout,scream etc but it would not be supported in pakatan. so it would be just a rhetoric or drama played by pas. imagine if the rules federal and dap/pkr are aginst pas view, what can they do? nothing.make your coalition understand and agree with you first before you bring it out.

Hasan claims PAS leadership controlled by secular group

MUAR: Ex-Selangor PAS commissioner Datuk Dr Hasan Ali claims 72% of the party's leadership is now controlled by a secular group "who are in collusion with DAP and PKR."
He said the rest of the leadership comprised religious scholars who were willing to ignore the original struggle of the party to support opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, whose ambition was to conquer Putrajaya in the 13th general election.
"I had a secular education but I want PAS to be led by the ulamak who obtained their education in Egypt and Jordan," he said in his ceramah organised by the Muar Malay Development and Integrity Organisation (Pekim), near Bukit Naning, here, Friday night.
Hasan, who was recently sacked from PAS, also revealed how the party leadership had tried to persuade him to soften his stance and just follow the directives of Pakatan, which was unhappy with his action to check what he claimed were efforts to convert Malays in Selangor to Christianity.
"They asked me to be patient by saying that Islamic laws will be enforced after Putrajaya is conquered," he said.
Hasan in his ceramah also reminded Malays of their rights, as enshrined in the constitution, which would be undermined if they allowed PAS, DAP and PKR to gain control of the country.
He said the Opposition alliance did not want to hear the word Islam, Malays and King and would give their children a liberal education if they were given the opportunity to rule the country. - Bernama

Zaid Ibrahim: EGM will be held soon to dissolve Kita

KUALA LUMPUR: Kita founder Datuk Zaid Ibrahim said in his blog on Thursday that an extraordinary general meeting would be held soon to dissolve the political party as it had failed in its aim of being a party that supported moderate and progressive ideas and brought civility and decorum to the political discourse.
He also said that he had been unable to raise enough funds to keep the party going.

An Extraordinary General Meeting will be held soon to dissolve KITA. This is necessary to remove any and all doubts that we indeed do support the Opposition, especially in light of some of our members in Kedah and Penang being openly critical of the Pakatan Rakyat. They have been doing this on a regular basis, making it clear that they are not interested in real issues affecting the country and merely want to embarass and ridicule the Opposition.
My idea to set up a political party that supports moderate and progressive ideas and brings civility and decorum to the political discourse has failed. I have not succeeded in bringing in enough members who are interested in democratic ideals, good governance and accountability amongst public officials . I have also not been able to raise sufficient funds to manage the party's activities, and friends who had promised to help have since decided otherwise.
The media's deep interest in the petty issues that affect the party is also indicative of the difficulties that we will continue to face. There are enough people out there who are just interested in criticising my leadership of KITA, and who manufacture stories to ridicule me.
The Malays have a proverb, jika sesat di penghujung jalan, kembalilah ka pangkal jalan. Essentially, it translates to: if you get lost along the way, go back to the beginning. I realise now that forming KITA was a mistake. I had hoped to provide alternative ideas in politics and to bring a wider diversity of talent to the Opposition's leadership. That has not happened. I have made many mistakes in my life but I am not disheartened. I remain convinced that change will come for the betterment of this country and I will do my part, again and again, to help achieve that. I will not waiver in my deep-seated belief that serving the public is good, and that we can carry out this service with honour and dignity.
To the genuine members of the party who are obviously unhappy with this decision, I seek your forgiveness. I appreciate your support and I hope you will accept this decision, for it is for the greater good of the Opposition. The survival of democracy depends on the viability of the Opposition. If it is destroyed as the Barisan Nasional is bent on doing then there can be no democarcy, no freedom and no moderate policies ever again.

tunku : the only main reason for zaid to dissolve Kita is because of money. although he is a multi millionaire(thanks to BN) he is not willing to sacrifice his wealth of his political agenda.the second reason would be there s hardly any support for this tiny party. it is just a frustration......thats all. that is why you can see his appearance in anwar's "shows" lately even though it's because of anwar he quits pkr and formed Kita. what a jerk.

A Road That Finally Reaches Ba'kelalan

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 1 (Bernama) -- For years, the abandoned and muddy logging track between Long Luping and Ba'Kelalan in Lawas, Sarawak, has been the main access to the outside world, apart from four-times-weekly air service operated by MASWings.
The journey through this logging track to reach Ba'Kelalan, located on the highlands bordering Kalimantan, Indonesia, can be very challenging and dangerous due to it appalling conditions.
But since the end of last year, the situation has dramatically improved following the upgrading of the track, which begun in 2009 as part of the effort to help the rural communities.
It used to take eight hours to two days, depending on weather conditions, to reach Ba'Kelalan from the nearby town of Lawas; but today, travellers can reach their destination within three to four hours.
The former logging track between Long Luping and Ba'Kelalan -- a 75km stretch often impassable when it become too muddy after a heavy downpour -- has been improved through an allocation of RM52 million by the federal government.
The recently completed improvements, which include access roads to several villages and 10 new bridges, was carried out by the Royal Engineering Regiment of the Malaysian Armed Forces, through a soil stabilisation technology under the "Jiwa Murni" project.
Ba'Kelalan community leader Tagal Paran, 78, has been reported saying the upgraded road has cut travel time by half, and the people are delighted that they do not have to worry about being cut off from Lawas during the monsoon season.
He said villagers are grateful to the federal government for funding the project, and the Defence Ministry for sending soldiers to complete the work through the ministry's community outreach programme, Jiwa Murni.
In order to show their appreciations, about 30 community leaders and village elders from Ba'Kelalan and Bario travelled recently from the highlands to Putrajaya to pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, to thank him personally for the road.
What is interesting about this project is that the army managed to build the 75km Long Luping-Ba'Kelalan road for only RM52 million, slashing 75 per cent from the estimated RM250 million if it had been implemented by conventional contract.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the project was a development concept that has never been carried out before.
"What attracted me and the government most is that the project, under the old thinking, would have needed to wait for quite some time, as the allocation was substantial, but it could be completed very quickly once we had taken the decision," he told the visiting community leaders and village elders.
Just a few days after he took office, the Prime Minister sent his political secretary Datuk Shahlan Ismail to Ba'Kelalan to survey the people's needs and make recommendations.
"He came back with gruesome pictures of road conditions, and it would have taken a long time to resolve the problems with the conventional concept. That is why we decided that a new concept was needed," Najib said.
Already the impact of the project has been tremendous, as villagers now enjoy lower transportation costs and cheaper daily necessities.
"I was told that a can of soft drink used to cost RM3 but now it's RM2, while a cylinder of gas that costs RM60 is now RM45 in Ba'Kelalan," Najib said.
Completion of the road has brought much relief and happiness to the Ba'Kelalan folks.
As pointed out by Sandra Munga Tagal in a letter to a local newspaper and on a blog, the completion of the Luping-Ba'Kelalan road enabled many natives to return to the highlands to celebrate last year's Christmas.
With limited off-days and just timber tracks connecting the outside world to her village in Ba'Kelalan, she explained, it used to be very difficult for people to spend holidays in the remote highlands with their families.
However, last Christmas, many drove home from various parts of Sarawak.
"Today, many enjoyed Christmas and the long holiday season with their families and loved ones in the remote highlands. You no longer need to travel by four-wheel-drive vehicles and spend the night on the road when it rains.
"This year we enjoyed the biggest Christmas gathering in history, as almost everyone made it a point to drive home to Ba'Kelalan. Those who returned home to Long Semadoh and Ba'Kelalan for Christmas drove from as far as Kuching (more than 1,000 km), Bintulu, Miri, Brunei and Kota Kinabalu, much to their old folks' delight," she wrote in a blog.
She said some had been dreaming for 29 years of getting their families together at the village for Christmas, but it was never easy, especially for those travelling with infants and children on the rough tracks.
Getting a seat on MASWings -- a rural air service operated by Malaysia Airlines' subsidiary -- during the festive season was too difficult because of the limit of 19 seats in the Twin-Otter aircraft.
However, with the newly built road, many people were able to spend Christmas in the village with their parents and families.
"Thank you, Mr. PM (Prime Minister), for what you have done and, Oh! The smiles on those wrinkled faces.
"And you should have seen the joyful light in the eyes of the fresh little faces," she summed up.

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 30 (Bernama) -- The statement by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of expressing full support for actions taken in protecting Israel's security, made during an interview with The Wall Street Journal recently, was no surprise at all to former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Dr Mahathir said this was because the opposiiton leader had a close relationship with Jewish leaders since some time ago.
As a leader who has known Anwar's character for a long time, Dr Mahathir said Anwar's motive was to promote himself as a modern and liberal leader in order to win praise from the western countries.
"I'm not surprised as I know he (Anwar) is close to them (Israel). He is also very friendly with many members of the United States Congress and Senate who are of Jewish origin. He is sympathetic towards the Jewish state's struggle.
"Definitely he is close to Israel because he likes to be praised by the West for this. He wants to be seen as a modern leader who follows the trend, but actually he is way behind time," he said after delivering a Razak Series lecture titled, 'A Malaysian Approach to Public Leadership', at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.
Dr Mahathir also hit out at Anwar for always tarnishing the country's good name to the world.
Asked on Anwar's leadership, he said without any direction and development agenda for the country and people, the former deputy prime minister had a big dream of capturing Putrajaya and becoming prime minister.
Dr Mahathir said only leaders who really understood the people's needs and had no self-importance could take the country to a higher level of development but Anwar, clearly, did not have such qualities.
"Anwar and his supporters' main aim is take over Putrajaya with he as prime minister. But (development) programmes he has none.
"He tells everyone that he is liberal, a man for everyone, so be gets support and may become prime minister," Dr Mahathir added.

Mustapa On How To Win Kelantan

KOTA BAHARU, Jan 29 (Bernama) -- Kelantan Umno liaison chief Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed has spelled out several key factors which are crucial to Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) in its quest to win back Kelantan from PAS in the 13th general election.
Mustapa, who foresees the coming polls to be the most intense ever in the country's election history, said Kelantan Umno and BN must be strong to be able to enter the fray and emerge the winner.
"Alhamdulillah our leader, (Prime Minister) Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is strong and so is his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin; but that is not enough if Kelantan Umno and BN are not strong. Everyone of us should be strong because only then people will accept us," he said in an interview with Bernama here.
Mustapa, who is Jeli member of parliament and International Trade and Industry Minister, said the choice of candidates would be "extremely important" in winning back Kelantan after 22 years of PAS' rule.
PAS wrested Kelantan from the BN in 1990. In the 12th general election in 2008, PAS won 30 state seats, BN won six, and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), one. PAS also won nine parliamentary seats, PKR won three and BN, two.
Mustapa said although it has not been finalised yet, Kelantan Umno has come up with a list of "winnable candidates" for the election.
"In the past, there might have been some miscalculations in several areas. Generally, the candidates were good but might not be suitable to be fielded in certain areas and that was why we lost in those seats," he said.
This time around, he said, Umno should be more careful and field only those who are truly capable of winning.
"This concept of winnable candidates is not just about being popular in Umno but also about being accepted by all. If they are popular only in Umno, then they will lose for sure. They should not contest; because they will lose the battle on the very first day," he said.
"Winnable candidates are those who are popular with the people, non-governmental organisations, civil servants, police, the armed forces, veterans and so on."
"They must be able to attract the interest of people," Mustapa said. "They must have the 'oomph' -- the wow factor -- to attract people; not just Umno people but all the voters, fence-sitters or otherwise."
It was therefore crucial, he said, for Kelantan Umno members and leaders to accept the decision of party leadership on the choice of candidates and not resort to the "chah keting" practice or back-stabbing if they are not chosen because this would mean giving advantage to the opponents.
Those who aspire to become candidates should assess their own capabilities and not try assert themselves because this might prove to be counter-productive.
"Those who try to do so would normally be rejected. If one asserts himself as someone who is qualified, it maybe because he is not," he said, adding that Umno was aware of the fact that there might be many winnable candidates in an area, making it difficult to choose the right one.
"So we choose the best among the winnables," he added.
The rest of the winnable candidates should be patient and accept the reality that the party can only choose one, he said.
"Don't do anything detrimental to the party, don't resort to sabotage. It's important to have discipline because in this fight, we want to win."
"If we resort to rebellious attitude and sabotage, this will weaken the party and our struggle to wrest back Kelantan from PAS will be rendered futile," he said.
Observers have been alluding to the fact that Umno lost Kelantan in 1990 not due to the strength of PAS but because the party had been weakened by the practice of "chah keting" by those who failed to get posts at the divisional level and boycotted their own divisions' election campaign.
To win the 13th general election, Mustapa said, all divisional leadership including the Youth, Wanita and Puteri should work as a team with one objective -- to win Kelantan.
He said the "red wave" -- a movement launched last year to galvanise party members and supporters to win Kelantan -- had lifted the spirit of party members and leaders.
"It has united us to fight under a common objective -- to ensure BN emerges the winner," he said, stressing that in-fightings, which had caused the people to distance themselves from Umno, should be stopped at once.
Umno leaders at all levels should get down to the grassroots not just when there were events involving the government or party, he added.
They should also be proactive and make their own initiatives to reach out to the people, and not just relying on the initiatives of state Umno leaders, so that the people would be able to feel their touch, he said.
They should meet as many groups of people as possible, including NGOs, civil servants, government retirees, farmers, fishermen, traders and the young so that they will be able to feel that Umno cares for their plights, Mustapa said.
"We are proud of Wanita Umno's 'Jalinan Rakyat' programme where the members have been visiting party divisions and villages. This has been the neatest of machinery, with one member taking care of 10 families," he said.
Information machinery should also be strengthened so that government policies can be accurately disseminated, he said.
"Information is important. If people are deprived of it, they cannot be blamed for having a skewered view towards us and becoming easily influenced by the opposition's lies and propaganda," he said.
"Twenty-two years is a period too long under an opposition's rule. I'm confident that if we are united and loyal to the leadership, the BN will return to power in Kelantan come the 13th general election," he said.

KOTA BAHARU, Jan 28 (Bernama) -- The intention voiced by Pas President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang not to contest in the 13th general election clearly indicates that there is something wrong in the party, according to Kelantan Umno Liaison Committee deputy chairman Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussein.
He said the public statement made by the party president was something really extraordinary and was a sign that the party was passing though a severe crisis.
"This (decision) is probably resulting from the conflict in PAS, including from the sacking of Selangor PAS commissioner Datuk Dr Hasan Ali.
"This situation will probably give a major blow to PAS spiritual leader, Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, as he is the one who should be making such a decision after holding the post of Kelantan Menteri Besar for too long," he said.

Datuk T returns with new Thailand sex expose

The ‘Datuk T’ trio, who had screened a sex video claiming to be that of PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, today challenged the opposition leader to prove them wrong or face another “more shocking” video expose.
In a front page report on Malay language daily Utusan Malaysia, one of the trio, former Perkasa treasurer Shuib Lazim (right) , said the new sex video was recorded on Jan 12 and 13 last year in Thailand.
"I have seen the video passed to me by Eskay.
"I believe Eskay is ready to make an expose of the video in court if Anwar sues us," he said, referring to another Datuk T member Shazryl Ekay Abdullah.
"Look at (Anwar’s) passport to check where he was. Or ask his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail," he said.
Shuib added that Anwar should sue the trio, including former Malacca chief minister Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik, if any international forensic analyst can prove that Anwar was not in the first sex video exposed last March.
The video, first screened to journalists, showed a man resembling Anwar fornicating with a woman.
Anwar lodged a police report denying that the man in the video was him, while the Datuk T trio were fined for screening pornography in public.
Police are investigating Anwar under Section 182 of the Penal Code for giving " false information to injure another person” based on his police report denying he was the man in the video.
'No point debating with Anwar'
Meanwhile, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak need not entertain Anwar’s challenge for a debate on the country’s policies.
Mahathir was reported by Malay language dailies Sinar Harian and Berita Harian as saying that Anwar only wants to have a debate to "show that he is bengis (fierce)".
"What’s the point of debating when everyone knows his stand, and the debate won’t change this.
"It’s a different case if Anwar shares the government’s opinion on matters raised," he said.

Umno Mobilises More Than 63,000 Information Campaigners

KANGAR, Jan 21 (Bernama) -- More than 63,000 Umno information campaigners nationwide will be actively mobilised to disseminate information on national development in the light of the coming general election.
Umno Malaysia Information chief Datuk Ahmad Mazlan said the campaigners would be aided by 3.3 million Umno members to ensure the public could evaluate the huge contribution of the party, which is the backbone of the government.
Speaking at a press conference before holding a briefing session for Umno division information chiefs here, he said the information campaigners must be fully made use of.
He said four methods would be utilised by the information machinery, including face-to-face media, print media, digital media and electronic media.
Although, there were those who were of the opinion that the information machinery must focus on young voters, Ahmad, who is also Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, said attention would be on all levels of voters.

Saiful Sends Appeal Request To Attorney-General

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 19 (Bernama) -- Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan today sent an official letter asking the Attorney-General, Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail, to file an appeal against Kuala Lumpur High Court's decision on Jan 9 to acquit and discharge Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim from a sodomy charge.
Mohd Saiful Bukhari in his blog said that the letter was sent through his lawyer, Mssrs Zamri Idrus & Co.
He said the letter had to be sent as he had yet to receive any feedback from Abdul Gani pertaining to the notice of appeal.
"Up till today, there is no response from the Attorney-General concerning my father's and my open application to file the appeal. Time is running out," he said.
Mohd Saiful Bukhari if he had the right to file the appeal himself, he would have done it without bothering other individuals.
However, the absolute power to file the appeal was in the hand of the Attorney-General.

Mahathir Questions Criticisms Over Anwar's Accuser Right To Appeal

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 17 (Bernama) --It is difficult to win an appeal but not in the case of opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, said former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
He said since facing a sodomy charge in 2008, Anwar had not exhausted his court appeals.
Dr Mahathir said when Anwar was acquitted and discharged by the High Court recently of the charge of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, the victim's plea for an appeal against the verdict was disputed.
"Does the opposition leader has a special privilege that justice is served only when he is found not guilty?
"Does a minnow has no right to seek justice to the extent that his appeal cannot be heard by the court anymore?" asked Mahathir in his blog entitled "Right to Appeal" Tuesday.
Several opposition leaders have criticised Mohd Saiful Bukhari's father, Azlan Mohd Lazim for seeking the Attorney-General's Chambers to appeal against the verdict.
Dr Mahathir questioned why Anwar's refusal to take a religious oath (sumpah laknat) at the mosque to deny the sodomy allegation did not have any meaning, particularly to Muslims.
Mohd Saiful Bukhari swore by holding the Quran at the Federal Territory Mosque here on Friday, Aug 18, 2008, claiming that Anwar had sodomised him.
"... and doesn't a sumpah laknat taken by a nobody means anything?" asked Dr Mahathir.
Dr Mahathir said if the recent court verdict was not in his favour, Anwar would have filed an appeal to a higher court.

Hasan slams Anwar over BBC interview

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Dr Hasan Ali has called Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim "power crazy" and said he cannot see himself working with the PKR adviser.
The Gombak Setia assemblyman, sacked by PAS last week, also said Anwar's recent comments in an interview with the BBC on homosexuality was one of the reasons why he cannot bring himself to be associated with the Opposition leader.
"The people must reject Anwar's struggle. God forbid, if we legalise laws to accept homosexuality in our society, chaos will ensue," he said.
He also said he would go on a nationwide road tour to "expose the parasites who have infested PAS", as well as explain his sacking.
"These parasites have come into PAS and are holding strategic positions in the party. I will reveal who they are during ceramahs at my nationwide roadshows," said Dr Hasan at a press conference held at his house Monday.
Dr Hasan also said his heart will always remain with PAS and that he has no intention to join Umno.
"If one day PAS can free itself from these parasites, I will be filling up a new member's form to rejoin PAS."
He declined to reveal what his plans were for the upcoming general election.

SHAH ALAM, Jan 15 (Bernama) -- PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu's claim that various quarters in Barisan Nasional (BN) are supporting Pakatan Rakyat (PR) to ensure that PR gains control of Putrajaya in the coming general election is a lie.
Umno Information chief Datuk Ahmad Mazlan, who made the statement, said there was no proof indicating that some BN members were found to be supporting PR.
"He is lying and I deny his statement. If there is support from BN, I want him to show me a list of who in BN are supporting Pakatan Rakyat," he told reporters after attending a function here, Sunday.
He was asked to comment on the allegation by Mohamad or Mat Sabu that certain quarters in BN including ex-ministers and ministers offered support to topple BN to enable PR to take over Putrajaya.
Mat Sabu made the statement at the Third PR Convention at Stadium Sultan Abdul Halim, Kedah, yesterday.
Ahmad said: "What Mat Sabu said is baseless. It is the same as his remarks, prior to this, when he said Mat Indera was a freedom fighter when he (Mat Indera) was actually a member of the Malayan Communist Party. This had been proven."

PM: Best to hold polls after Govt fulfils promises and reform plans

PETALING JAYA: The 13th general election will not be held so soon as the Government's reform initiatives are not in full swing yet.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who said this in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, said the general election would be held as soon as the economic reforms imposed produce real results.
“Essentially, it's a call you have to make on the basis of a feel-good factor, and that's when you press the button,” said Najib in the interview published yesterday.
He also insisted that the Government had to fulfil its promises to the people.
“You can have all the polling numbers but you must have the sense that this is the right time.
“I hope it will be the right time soon enough, but we still have not delivered on our promises and it's important for people to have the feeling that the reforms we have promised will actually benefit them,” he added.
Najib acknowledged that the deteriorating global economic environment, especially with Europe's debt crisis, could be a factor on when to dissolve parliament.
“But so far we are still quite comfortable because our exposure to the EU in terms of total trade is only about 9%. So, we are less vulnerable.
“But a Euro-zone collapse or some other catastrophe there will affect the whole world,” he said.
The general election has to be called before April 2013, with much speculation that it could be held as early as March this year.
In the interview, Najib also said Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent acquittal from the sodomy charge underscored the depth of the reform process.
“It shows that, as chief executive of the country, I don't interfere in the judiciary,” Najib said.
Anwar was acquitted on Monday on a charge of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
The judge ruled that there was a lack of corroborative evidence in the two-year long trial to penalise the former deputy prime minister.
Once the verdict was released, “all of the tension surrounding the trial suddenly fell away and people suddenly realised that there are more important things than just the Anwar issue.
“What is important now is that we move forward,” Najib added.

Shahrizat applies for leave from ministerial duties pending NFC probe

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said Thursday she has applied for three weeks' leave from Friday from her duties as Women, Family and Community Development Minister.
She said in a statement that she had put in the leave application to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
"I hope the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will be able to undertake the investigation to determine whether I was associated with or not in any of the decisions made by the Government on the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) in which my husband, Datuk Seri Dr Mohammad Salleh Ismail, is the executive chairman," she said.
The NFC issue cropped up after the 2010 Auditor-General's Report issued last October said the corporation's cattle-breeding project in Gemas, Negri Sembilan, to boost production and reduce import of beef had failed to meet its target.

Prosecution wants to appeal against Anwar's acquittal

PETALING JAYA: The prosecuting team of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's trial wants to appeal against the High Court decision which acquitted the Opposition Leader of the charge of sodomising former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
Lead prosecutor Solicitor-General II Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden said the decision to file for an appeal was made after studying all evidence relating to the case, reported TV3 in its Nightline English news this morning.
Mohd Yusof would make the recommendation to Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail soon so that an appeal could be filed within 10 days, added Nightline.
The Solicitor-General II added that prosecutors would first apply for the full written judgment to study the grounds for the acquittal.
On Monday, Justice Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah said the court could not be 100% certain after going through the evidence that the integrity of the DNA samples had not been compromised.
“The court finds that it is not safe to rely on the DNA evidence. So what is left is only SP1's (Mohd Saiful) testimony, ” he said in his oral judgment.
“As this is a sexual crime, the court is reluctant to convict based entirely on SP1's testimony without corroboration. The accused is thus acquitted and discharged,” he ruled.
Earlier in the day, at a press conference, Saiful's father Azlan Mohd Lazim urged for an appeal.
“For the sake of my son, I plead with the A-G's Chambers to appeal. As a father, I will continue to be with my son to get justice,” he said.
He added that the A-G's Chambers should not be influenced by the Bar Council or any other party asking it not to appeal.
Azlan said the view of the council seemed to deny a citizen's right to a trial.
“The Bar Council should take a neutral stand on the judicial process and not prevent justice.
“This is the first time that we are appealing and there are attempts to prevent it. Why the double standards? Is it because my son is an ordinary citizen and not a VIP or a politician that his rights can be denied?” he asked.
Azlan said his family had yet to decide on the next course of action, including taking a civil suit against Anwar, adding that they would wait until the 14-day period to appeal had been exhausted.
He, however, did not want to answer questions on the outcome of the trial but said that despite the court's decision, Saiful was “all right and upbeat”.
“Life is normal for him and the family. We have moved on. We act professionally, even though we are nobodies,” he said.

Hasan can still be a thorn

Datuk Dr Hasan Ali was a constant thorn in the side of the Selangor government and his party colleagues in PAS. Now that he is sacked, will he continue to torment the party?
AFTER months maybe years of agonising, PAS has finally bitten the bullet and summarily sacked its fiery former Selangor commissioner Datuk Dr Hasan Ali.
The maverick politician is accused of consistently pulling the party in a different direction, essentially to-wards an alliance on Malay unity with Umno.
PAS is taking a big gamble sacking Dr Hasan now and not earlier, when many Pakatan Rakyat colleagues had wanted the party to act against its wayward member.
Dr Hasan was a constant thorn on the side of the Selangor government and his own party colleagues.
He was seen as not being a team player, pushing hard his own Islamic agenda.
He feels strongly that Malays, who are divided three ways between Umno, PAS and PKR, should unite and form a big and unshakeable bloc in Parliament and the state assemblies.
Only then, he reasoned, can they defend the Malay interest, Islam and the institution of the Malay Rulers.
The problem is that not everybody agrees with him and PAS has to tolerate his many gaffes and intransigence ever since the Pakatan Rakyat coalition came to be formed in the aftermath of the March 2008 general election.
Within days, it was revealed that Dr Hasan was one of the PAS leaders who went behind the back of his PKR and DAP colleagues and others in PAS to seek a unity government with Umno.
From that time onwards, his relationship with his Pakatan allies soured, to the point he was removed as Selangor PAS commissioner last year to allegedly mitigate the damage done to the Pakatan partners and among PAS' multi-racial supporters.
But he continued to speak up and berate the PAS leadership that is dominated by the Erdogans or moderates, led by spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, for allegedly deviating from their Islamic path and charging that PAS was no longer an Islamic party.
The last straw was his call on PAS members to stay away from the rally in support of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex on Monday, ostensibly because it was a “personal moral issue” of Anwar.
A disgusted PKR deputy president Azmin Ali publicly demanded that PAS act against Dr Hasan for breaking Pakatan's agreed rules to stand by Anwar at any cost.
The party's central committee meeting on Sunday unanimously decided to sack the Gombak Setia assemblyman without recourse to asking him to answer disciplinary charges.
He is to be removed from the state exco, where he holds the portfolio for Islamic Affairs, Malay Custom, Infrastructure and Public Amenities.
His only recourse is to appeal to the party's Syura Council but it is not known, at this juncture, if Dr Hasan would do this.
He called a press conference at his Taman Tun Dr Ismail home on the day he was sacked and, along with Islamic scholars, continued to berate PAS for being ungrateful.
“I have defended Islam and the Malay race for 20 years and PAS rewards me with a sacking,” he told his audience, who included former PAS deputy president Nasarudin Mat Isa.
The question, now that Dr Hasan has been sacked, is how much damage he can do to the party and the Pakatan coalition.
Being a motivational speaker and articulate in expressing his views, can he turn his sacking into a momentum of grievances among Malay voters against his former party and deliver Selangor to Barisan Nasional in the upcoming general election?
Dr Hasan is viewed as a champion of the conservative bloc in the party and the Malay community and, as such, he is not easily rebuffed.
PAS has erred by not acting earlier against him and calling for a by-election in his state seat.
By delaying, the party had allow-ed him to grow and become powerful.
But it has finally put a stop to the runaway train by sacking Dr Hasan and seeking to remove him from the state exco but at what cost?

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court on Monday acquitted Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of the charge of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
Justice Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah said that after going through the evidence, the court could not be 100% certain the integrity of the DNA samples was not compromised.
He said as such, the court was left only with Saiful's testimony, which was uncorroborated, and was reluctant to convict based entirely on this.

S'gor to submit replacement exco member's name on Wednesday

PETALING JAYA: Selangor executive councillor Datuk Dr Hasan Ali has been sacked from PAS with immediate effect, party organ HarakahDaily reported Sunday.
In a brief statement, PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said the party's central committee's collective decision was reached based on a provision in Paragraph 82(9) of the party's constitution because of Hasan's actions, which were deemed detrimental to the party.
Dr Hasan, who is also former Selangor PAS commissioner and assemblyman for Gombak Setia, has been critical of PAS' leadership, particularly on the welfare state concept espoused by the party, which he said deviated from its original struggle of championing Islam.
PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan, in an immediate reaction, expressed full support for the decision.
Dr Hasan can appeal against the decision to the Shura council, the party's top decision-making body.
Reacting to the party's action, Dr Hasan expressed shock and said he would be consulting his friends and religious scholars on his next course of action.
"I just received news of my sacking. I am very shocked with the drastic action by the PAS central working committee," said Dr Hasan in a statement.
"I am also sad that my struggles for Islam are repaid in this manner," he added.
Dr Hasan said he will be calling for a press conference "soon" to clarify his position.
Meanwhile, the Selangor Mentri Besar's political secretary Faekah Husin said the name of the new executive councillor would be submitted to the palace on Wednesday.
She said Dr Hasan should resign as the executive councillor as he was no longer a member of the Pakatan Rakyat component party.

Hadi brushes off Dr Hasan's "prime minister" statements

PETALING JAYA: PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang has brushed aside Datuk Dr Hasan Ali's suggestion that he or spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat should become Pakatan Rakyat's prime minister of choice.
"What is important is that we must first win the general election.
"The question of who becomes prime minister is not important. What is important is that our country is safe. Everything is decided by Allah,” he said in his Facebook posting which was liked' by over 700 people.
Dr Hasan, the former Selangor PAS Commissioner, has been in hot soup recently for his slew of statements, including one in which he said Nik Aziz or Abdul Hadi should be the alliance's choice for prime minister as the country's top leader needed to be of “good moral standing”.
His statement was seen as an open defiance against Pakatan's decision to have PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the alliance's prime minister should they take over Putrajaya in the next general election.
Anwar had said that an interim prime minister would be appointed if he is jailed over the sodomy charges,
On Friday, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali called on the PAS top leadership to take action against Dr Hasan for his statements, stating that he was gone “overboard” and was no longer adhering to the principles and spirit of Pakatan.

Police agree Free Anwar rally be held at car park of Jalan Duta court complex

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have agreed that the "Free Anwar 901" gathering on Monday can be held at the car park of the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex in Jalan Duta here.
City police chief Datuk Mohmad Salleh said this was decided at a meeting between the police and PKR deputy president Azmin Ali on Friday.
"Following the discussion, they have decided and promised to have a peaceful gathering at the car park," Mohmad told a press conference.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 5 (Bernama) -- A gathering called "Himpun Keadilan Untuk Saiful" is being planned at the courts complex here on Monday, the same day supporters of Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim are planning to stage a demonstration in conjunction with the delivery of the court's verdict in his sodomy case.
The "Himpun Keadilan Untuk Saiful" gathering is to be organised by an organisation called Pertubuhan Permufakatan Majlis Ayahanda Malaysia (Permas) in support of Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, a former aide of Anwar whom the opposition leader is alleged to have sodomised.
Permas secretary-general Zulkifly Shariff said about 5,000 Permas members would participate in the gathering which he added is also aimed at defending the country's judicial system from being tarnished by Anwar's supporters.
"They know that street demonstration is not our culture and if they continue to hold the rally, they will have to face Permas and the Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM)," he told reporters here Thursday.
Zulkifly said Permas would apply for a police permit to hold the gathering which would involve the participation of 15 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) under Permas.

Anwar says Pakatan has identified successor

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Rakyat has identified Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's successor, should he be found guilty of sodomy and jailed, the PKR adviser told Bloomberg Wednesday.
However, Anwar did not reveal the name of his potential successor.
On Tuesday, Anwar told a press conference that the Pakatan Rakyat leaders have discussed the worst-case scenario in the event he was imprisoned.
"If I am jailed, involved in accident or shot, we are prepared, discussed various possibilities, scenario one, two, three," Anwar had told reporters.
On Monday, the High Court is expected to deliver its verdict on whether Anwar is guilty of sodomising a former aide.

PKR To Go Ahead With 901 Campaign Even With No Permit

SHAH ALAM, Jan 4 (Bernama) -- Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) will go ahead with its "Free Anwar 901" campaign although no application for a police permit has been made by the organisers.
"We definitely don't intend to apply for a permit to hold the campaign rally as we know a permit will not be issued (by police) as had happened before," said Selangor PKR information chief, Shuhaimi Shafie.
The gathering planned for this Jan 9 is said to be aimed at seeking justice for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when the Kuala Lumpur High Court gives its verdict on the sodomy case involving the opposition leader on that day.
Asked on the 336 police reports lodged by various groups from throughout the country up to yesterday against the campaign, Shuhaimi said PKR would not bow to such pressure.
He said besides the Kuala Lumpur High Court, the campaign would also be carried out at other locations in the federal capital, but these had not been determined yet.

More Lodge Police Reports Against Planned 'Free Anwar Campaign

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 3 (Bernama) -- More organisations and individuals have lodged police reports against the planned "901 Free Anwar Campaign" in the capital on Monday.
Three office-bearers from two non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and two political leaders filed their reports at the Dang Wangi police station here Tuesday.
They were Ikatan Rakyat Malaysia (IRIMM) president Amir Amsaa Alla Pitchay, Penang IRIMM chairman Zainol Abidin Ahmad, Dewan Ekonomi dan Sosial Malaysia president Mohd Fazil Abdullah, MIC Wangsa Maju division chief S.Mohan Pillay and Federal Territory Wanita Umno chief Datuk Azizah Abdul Samad.
Speaking to reporters, Amir Amsaa said the organisers were trying to get the attention of foreign media to paint a bad picture of the country to the world.
"If the protest takes place, it will adversely affect our economy. We urge the police to take action against the organisers and ensure that the protest does not take place," he said.

Raja Petra hits back at detractors

PETALING JAYA: Controversial blogger-in-exile Raja Petra Kamaruddin has hit back at critics who have accused him of selling out to Barisan Nasional after he criticised Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in a recent interview with Mingguan Malaysia.
In his latest post on his website, he said he had expected the barrage of criticism unleashed against him once the interview was published as "not many could accept the truth".
Dismissing comments in various online portals where readers questioned whether he had sold out or turned traitor against Anwar, he said the vast majority of their comments did not matter to him.
"The more important issue is, which category are you in? Are you amongst the less than four million Malaysians who voted Opposition in the last general election in 2008 or are you amongst the more than 11 million eligible voters who did not vote Opposition, did not vote at all, or did not even register to vote?
"Yes, I value your comments, but only if you fall in the first category of all those various groups above. If not, then your comments are of no significance. And that would probably mean almost all if not all of those who are commenting," he wrote in his latest blog post Monday, questioning the majority of the commenters' true commitment towards asserting their political rights.
Once a staunch Anwar supporter, RPK stunned many when he questioned whether Anwar was the best candidate to lead the country and said he "wasn't impressed" with Anwar's performance in Selangor.
"Have there been many drastic changes in Selangor? Definitely not. The feedback we have received reflects that corruption still remains at the same level, no decrease," he said in the interview, which was also published in Berita Harian, The New Sunday Times and his online website Malaysia Today on Sunday.
RPK pointed out that it had been three years since Anwar was appointed Selangor's economic advisor, and yet had gone for more than 60 overseas trips during that period instead of carrying out his duties.
"We tell him, stay in the country and carry out your duties in Pakatan. More than 60 trips overseas is really too extreme," he said.

Late Salleh Majid's Extraordinary Achievements As Bursa Chief Remembered

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 2 (Bernama) -- The late Datuk Mohd Salleh Abdul Majid was today hailed as a leader who made extraordinary achievements while helming the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (now known as Bursa Malaysia) besides championing the Malay economic agenda.
Former Bernama general manager Datuk Seri Azman Ujang, who often covered economic news when he was with Bernama's editorial team, said share prices when Mohd Salleh was heading the exchange (from 1996 until his retirement in 2003) kept going up unlike now.
"That time, share prices were skyrocketing and there were even cases where the share price of unknown counters reached up to RM140. Now there are shares which are even cheaper than a roti canai (average price RM1), and not going up.
"That was the situation during Mohd Salleh's heyday," said Azman, who was Bernama's Editor-in-Chief before being promoted as its general manager.
He added that one of Mohd Salleh's aspirations was the formation of an Islamic stock exchange involving the participation of several Arab countries and Malaysia.
Meanwhile, Malay Businessmen and Industrialists Association of Malaysia (Perdasama) president Datuk Moehamad Izat Emir said Mohd Salleh was a very consistent person and a decisive leader.
"I hope someone will compile his thoughts into a book," he said in commenting on the death of Mohd Salleh, 62, who died at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (KLH) of rectal cancer and renal failure at 10.20am Monday.
Perkasa (a right wing Malay movement) president Datuk Ibrahim Ali described Mohd Salleh's passing as a big loss for the Malays, saying he had been relentless in his effort in pushing for the Malays to advance economically.
"We studied together at the Mara Institute of Technology (now Universiti Teknologi Mara) but he was more inclined to economics than politics," he said, adding that Mohd Salleh was a very humble and moderate person.
According to Mohd Salleh's younger brother, Ibrahim Abdul Majid, 60, Mohd Salleh had been suffering from kidney problems since the 1990s.
"My brother had been in and out of hospitals several times and was warded again at the KLH on Tuesday," he said.
A daughter of Mohd Salleh, who did wish for her name to be published, said Mohd Salleh was a loving father and always made time for the family despite his busy schedule.
Mohd Salleh's remains were buried at the Ar-Ridhuan Mosque Muslim Cemetery, in Hulu Kelang here this afternoon.
