MAIWP Sponsored Students Get RM500, Flight Ticket To Egypt
KUALA LUMPUR, 22 Feb (Bernama) -- More than 400 students sponsored by the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department (MAIWP), who were evacuated from Egypt following the turmoil in the country, will be given RM500 assistance and flight tickets to Cairo to resume their studies.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom, who is also MAIWP chairman, said this was decided by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who chaired a meeting of menteris besar and chief ministers in Putrajaya Tuesday.
At the meeting, Muhyiddin also instructed all states administered by the Barisan Nasional (BN) to cover the flight costs for students returning to Egypt to continue their studies, he told reporters here today.
Earlier, he had attended a function hosted for the students by the Prime Minister's Department at the Federal Territory Mosque here.
Also present were Federal Territories and Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin, Malaysian Islamic Development Development (Jakim) director-general Datuk Wan Mohamad Sheikh Abdul Aziz and MAIWP chief executive officer Dr Muhammad Yamin Ismail.
Jamil Khir also said students in non-BN administered states wishing to return to Egypt to continue their studies and are in need of assistance could register with Jakim's portal www.Islam.gov.my but aid would depend on availability of funds.
"I find the states of Selangor and Penang have announced aid for students planning to return to Egypt," he said.
Asked when the students would be returning to Egypt, he said this would depend on the advice of the Higher Education Ministry.

How come we all so happy and think that we are living off the government when in actual fact it is the government that is living off the taxpayer's money.
