Tun Mahathir: Work ahead for next 50 years and more

KUALA LUMPUR: The nation’s Father of Modernisation Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has advised Malaysians to continue to work hard.
“We must work ahead for the next 50 years and more,” said the former prime minister when met after the Merdeka Day parade at Dataran Merdeka here yesterday.
He said he was pleased with the celebration and especially appreciated the highlights about the country’s struggles since independence in 1957.
“Congratulations and well done!” he said.
Dr Mahathir came with his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, who looked resplendent in a light pink and blue selendang with matching pearly white bag and shoes.
Former MCA president Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik said he was very touched by the celebrations.
“It is very, very, touching. It reminded the people of all the deeds of our previous leaders.
“Fittingly, there was a very long list of what Dr Mahathir did because he served the longest for 22 years and obviously, had many fine achievements.
“But no less important is what the other leaders did in the different sectors of Malaysian history,” said the former transport minister.
On whether Malaysia still had a long way to go, Dr Ling said progress was a never-ending process.
“We have to keep improving, otherwise we may be left behind,” he said.
Dr Ling said the country should continually ensure that peace, harmony and stability prevailed, as there would have been no progress without these inherent qualities that have brought Malaysia so far.
