Hishammuddin disagrees to TV debate

Hishammuddin Hussein has dismissed the need for a televised debate between those vying for the Umno vice-presidents post.

The incumbent vice-president was quoted in Berita Harian as saying that a debate was not needed as "not the whole world will decide the fate of Umno and not even the whole Umno membership."

Kedah Chief Minister Mukhriz Mahathir, one of the challengers for the Umno vice-president position, however was reported as saying that he was ready for a TV debate.

The idea was mooted by Umno veteran Musa Hitam and this was welcomed by Umno supreme council member Ahmad Shabery Cheek, who is also minister of multimedia and communication.

Ahmad Shabery said that each candidate should participate in a forum, adding that he had already organised for the candidates to be interviewed on RTM and Bernama TV.

Meanwhile, Umno disciplinary board acting chairperson Megat Najmuddin Megat Khas was reported as saying in Utusan Malaysia that Umno candidates can openly campaign as long as it is "not overdone and extreme."

He said that candidates can introduce themselves and their visions and missions. However, they should not defame their opponents.

"Don't ever use money... don't, don't. That has been the disciplinary board's emphasis," Megat Najmuddin warned in the Umno-owned newspaper.
