Pas accepts election results

WILL OF ALLAH: Hadi hails opposition's achievement as a major victory and backs Khalid for post of Selangor menteri besar

MARANG: PAS has accepted the results of the 13th General Election and hailed it as an unprecedented achievement for Pakatan although it failed to wrest Putrajaya from Barisan Nasional.
Saying it was the will of Allah, Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang urged party members to continue with their struggle to make Islam the pillar of Malaysia.
He told a crowd at the Rusila mosque compound on Wednesday night that BN would eventually fall as the only government that would last forever was the government of Allah.
"Even ancient governments led by prophets did not last forever, so we must not despair as the BN government will also eventually fall."
Hadi hailed the party's achievements as a "major victory" over BN because of the overwhelming support from young and non-Malay voters.
"We had BN cornered, as the Chinese and other races did not vote for BN. The young voters will be our main strength to face BN in the next general election as those above the age of 50 are hard to convince to support us," he said.
Pas secretary-general and election director Datuk Mustafa Ali said Pakatan's victory was something worth celebrating.
"Although we lost Kedah and failed to retake Perak, we retained Kelantan, Selangor and Penang, while gaining more ground in other states.
"We have also created history in Malacca, where Pas won its first ever seat in the state assembly."
Responding to a question, Hadi said Pas was fully behind PKR's Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim for the post of Selangor menteri besar.
"We'll take the collective approach to govern and Pas is fully behind Khalid to be the menteri besar although Pas had won more seats."
In Shah Alam, Selangor DAP has professed its support for Khalid to continue for a second term as the state's menteri besar last night.
At a Pakatan thanksgiving ceremony at Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam, Selangor DAP chairman Teresa Kok Suh Sim said DAP had already sent a letter to Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah to indicate the party's support for Khalid.
