Dr M: Reduce wealth gap to narrow race gap

BANGI: All races living in this country will refer to themselves as Malaysians once the economic gap between them is reduced, says former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“Although we have not achieved full unity, I believe that once the wealth gap is not so great, then the race gap will not be so great either,” he added, addressing a forum entitled Unity Towards 2020 last night.
He said that all the races were responsible for ensuring the success of the country, adding that it had been difficult to get all the races to really get together because of Malaysia’s demographic profile.
Asked to comment on the issue of the social contract, he said it should never be rescinded.
“The Federal Constitution was based on that contract and more than that, its spirit is such that it ensures each race sacrifices something to gain something else, ” Dr Mahathir said.
“If we destroy it, then there will be no more Malay reserve land, the Chinese will lose their mother tongue in schools and citizenships may be revoked,” he said.
Dr Mahathir said that the balance must be protected and that it was only an issue now as there were politicians who wanted to gain popularity.

tunku : that is what the government should do now, reduce the WEALTH gap between races as it is not balance right now.only then we can talk about equality.

the wealth gap is there because of current economic policy which only benefit those who knows how to get it i.e cable, fiber optic, you name it.

Those who know-how but never get educated on how to deliver... there's a lots of channel that do help, but the processes takes a lots and sometimes the fees is unbearable to the business starter....

i really wish i could start up a yayasan to garner the wealth of other people... and these people who benefit start helping out the others, not start making money from others.

the govt should have did this a long time ago.even Dr.M had the chance to do so back when he was the Prime Minister.

there's still many areas in Malaysia that still dont have adequate facilities (water, electric).dont neglect them.dont take them for granted.help them.they're also a part of Malaysia.

I completely agree with sir taek boon.
but i doubt if that 'vision' is even going to see daylight.
People are more concern in protecting their own 'periuk nasi' than to think about others.

Ah Ah ini pandai punya idea. Reduced the wealth gap between rich and poor before we called all ourselves malaysians-TDM??
Is this really truly the solution? Or just a wishful thinking to spin the mass populace. Down to earth look around in the advance countries, do this happen??? I think the best and important thing is to remove corruptions at all govn and politicians levels. I believe genuinely people are not envy of others making their riches and wealth but as long as they do it honestly with their own sweat.
But when you see people making money thro corruptions, cronies, family ties at the expense of the public funds, that's the problem.
Don't tell TDM do not know of this??? If corruptions can be stopped or prevented than unity between races would have a better chance in Malaysia.
