Do not blame the government
Go for government jobs, Chinese youths told
PENANG: Chinese youths should cast aside their prejudice towards civil service and apply for the jobs to contribute to society and the country.
MCA Youth chief Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said the low ratio of Chinese applying to join government service had reached a worrying level.
“For the first half of 2007, only 9,000 Chinese, which is a mere 1.7% (of the total number of applicants), had applied for government jobs,” he said here on Thursday night.
He said it would not be a healthy sign if the trend continued.
Liow, who is also Deputy Youth and Sports Minister, said there used to be about 20.2% of Chinese working in the civil service in the 1970s but the percentage had taken a dip, recording only 9.37% in 2005.
“We had discussed the issue in the Cabinet, and MCA will continue to work vigorously to rope in more Chinese to become civil servants,” he said.
He urged the media to help publicise the advantage of joining the government sector, including its good benefits and the contributions towards the country.
“MCA is also trying to increase the number of Chinese scholarship holders so that we can directly bring them into serving the Government upon completing their studies,” he said.
He said the application process had been simplified and applicants could now apply for several jobs in the government service through the Internet at www.spa.gov.my.
“Those who have applied can send a copy of their application to MCA, and we will help them follow up with the case,” he added.
Liow was speaking before starting a dialogue session with the Penang MCA public speaking centre’s members.
tunku : just see the case above, only 9000 Chinese which is 1.7% of the total number of applicants who applied for government job.that means very few chinese and indians applied for it as private sector offer them better salary than the government sector.so please stop saying that government is preventing them to join.Let us all be rationale especially the hindraf group.
