MCA polls: Ong Tee Keat to contest for president's post

Former MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat has announced his candidacy for the top post in the party polls on Dec 21.

Speaking at a press conference here Monday, Ong said he had learnt from his weakness and was a new man, adding that he wanted to bring the party closer to the people.

Offering his services to the party, he said his experience as an MP since 1989 and ability to interact warmly with the people would help foster closer ties and regain their confidence.

"I will do what I can to bring the party closer to the people, regardless of race," he said.
Ong acknowledged that he has been called "lone ranger" but pointed out that he would not have survived as an MP if he truly had been a lone ranger.

"Whether it is true or not, I will leave it up to the wisdom of party members and the people.
"I humbly and sincerely seek the support of the people and the party," he added.

Ong was previously elected as MCA president in October, 2008, and remained in the post until March, 2010 when he was ousted by current president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

He was also the Pandan MP for two terms from 2004, and Transport Minister from 2008 to 2010. Ong did not contest in the 13th general election in May.
