that he would be offering himself as a candidate for the post, which he
held from 2004 to 2009.
"I'm offering myself as a candidate not to oppose anyone but to give the party members a choice," said Mohd Ali, 64, who is an Umno supreme council member.
His move to join the fray is expected to heat up the fight for the three vice president posts.
Former Negri Sembilan Mentri Besar Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad had also announced his intention to contest the third highest post in the party.
All three incumbents, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein and Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal have confirmed they will defend their posts.
Mohd Ali, who was Malacca Chief Minister from 1999 to 2013, had intended to move to the federal level when he contested the Bukit Katil parliament seat in the 13th General Election in May but his dream was shattered when he lost the seat to PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin.
