Umno Youth, Perkasa will stand down if Bersih calls off its July 9 rally
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth and Perkasa say they will call off their counter-rallies if Bersih 2.0 calls off its rally on July 9.
However, Umno Youth's Patriot Movement co-chairman Datuk Azeez Rahim warned on Monday that the stand down order to its members was conditional upon Bersih cancelling their street protest.
"We heed the Agong's call and respect his wishes. We will stand down our gathering and call on Bersih to do likewise," he told reporters here on Monday.
However, he said that Patriot, a coalition several non-governmental organisations and members of Umno Putera and Youth, would come out to counter Bersih if they persist in defying the Agong call.
Meanwhile, Perkasa chief Datuk Ibrahim Ali said that his movement would also call off their rally if Bersih did likewise.
“We respect the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Sultan of Pahang's call for peace but the question remains whether Bersih. 2.0 will continue to march on that day,” he told The Star on Monday.
He said Perkasa would decide on Wednesday whether to cancel or go ahead with its planned counter-rally once Bersih made its stance clear following the King's call for compromise.
tunku : well umno youth and perkasa had said their stand on the rally, now it's for bersih group to decide whether they still want to march on or pull out. i would still hope that perkasa and umno youth will pull out no matter what bersih decides. let the police handle the situation. we don't want to put our country in bad image.
