#MH17 : Malaysia Airlines Releases Full Passenger Manifest Of MH17

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) today released the full passenger manifest of Flight MH17 with the name, nationality and gender of those onboard.

There are 193 people from the Netherlands (including 1 dual Netherlands/United States citizen), Malaysia (43 people, including 15 crew and two infants), Australia (27), Indonesia (12, including an infant), United Kingdom (10, including one dual UK/South Africa citizen), Germany (four), Belgium (four), the Philipines (three), Canada (one), New Zealand (one).

In its latest media statement today, the airline said despite efforts made in the past 45 hours with the assistance of various foreign embassies to establish contact with the next-of-kin of the passengers, it was still unable to identify many more family members.

MH17 crash: Emergency Parliament sitting to be convened, flags to fly at half-mast

An emergency Parliament sitting will be convened to discuss issues regarding the "inhumane act" which brought down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.

In a special address that was televised live on Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak also said that the Government has called for all flags to be flown at half-mast until Mon, July 21, and the

Najib also said that despite speculation that the Boeing 777 was shot down by militants, the Malaysian Government would not be "pointing fingers" at any party until there is substantial evidence to prove it.

"However, we condemn the inhumane and uncivilised action which has taken the lives of 298 innocents," said Najib.

He also called on all Muslims, irrespective of political inclination, to come together and pray for the well-being and continued peace of the nation in the holy month of Ramadan.

He also encouraged Malaysians of other faiths to conduct their own prayers as well.

Najib said the crash site was under the control of Ukrainian separatists, but the Government was doing its utmost - including using diplomatic channels - so investigators can have unhindered access to the area to carry out their work.

In presenting the demands of the Malaysian Government, Najib firstly called upon the parties involved to ensure and guarantee the safety of investigators as they carried out their tasks.

"Secondly, the Malaysian Government urges parties involved not to tamper or contaminate evidence at the scene of the crash so investigations will be effective and transparent.

"Lastly, if it is indeed proven that the plane was shot down, the Malaysia will demand for the perpetrators to be brought to justice," he said.

The Prime Minister, in closing his speech, conveyed his condolences to the family and friends of all those on board MH17 and asked for everyone to remain patient until investigations are complete.

In a statement later, Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia said Parliament will convene next Wednesday, July 23, in line with Standing Order Rule 11(3).

Sabah Government Appreciates Security Forces' Service, Sacrifice - Musa

 The security forces' service and sacrifice in safeguarding peace and security in the country would always be appreciated and remembered by the state government, said Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.

He also urged the people in the state to support and give their full cooperation to the security forces in Sabah who were also defending the sovereignty of the country.

"During every festival, they have to be on duty far away for our sake. If not for them, we would not be able to feel safe and have events such as this. It is therefore incumbent on us to always appreciate and remember them," he said while presenting 'kuih raya' packages to representatives of the country's security frontliners here Thursday.

Musa who is also state security council chairman, also expressed his thanks to associations, private companies, non-governmental organisations and government-linked companies for their part in preparing the raya packages.

Meanwhile, he also urged the people to pray for the safety and wellbeing of the security forces.

Security In Sabah Under Control, Do Not Believe Rumour - Police

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman today stressed that the security in Sabah, especially along the east coast, is under control and urged the public not to believe rumour spread on the internet.

Denying that the security of Sabah was being threatened and there would be intrusions along the east coast of the state, he said police were now investigating the guilty parties spreading the rumour.

"We urge the public and the people of Sabah not to listen to rumours which are scaring the people. The security agencies are capable of controlling the situation should anything happen," he told reporters here Thursday after a ceremony to present Aidilfitri cookies to the armed forces by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.

Jalaluddin was commenting on the rumours which were rife on the internet and WhatsApp about the security situation in Sabah.

On the statement by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar yesterday that police would announce a curfew along a 1,400km-stretch of the Sabah east coast in 48 hours, Jalaluddin said they were ready to carry out the order.

"We held a meeting today in Semporna to discuss various issues (security as well as curfew)...definitely we are prepared," he said.

The curfew would be enforced during specific times from the international waters up to the East Sabah waters to prevent intruders and kidnappers from entering the state.

This follows the ambush on Pulau Mabul, Semporna recently when eight heavily armed individuals killed Koperal Ab Rajah Jamuan, 32, and kidnapped Konstabel Zakia Ali, 26.

Statement by Prime Minister Najib Razak:

Malaysian Airlines flight 17

Yesterday evening, I was informed of the terrible and deeply shocking news that a Malaysia Airlines jet went down in eastern Ukraine.

Malaysia Airlines has confirmed that the jet was Malaysia Airlines flight 17, which was on a scheduled flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

The flight departed Amsterdam at 12.15pm, local time. It was scheduled to arrive in Kuala Lumpur at 6.10 am, local, Malaysian time.

The aircraft was a Boeing 777-200.

The aircraft’s flight route was declared safe by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

And International Air Transportation Association has stated that the airspace the aircraft was traversing was not subject to restrictions.

Malaysia Airlines has confirmed that the aircraft did not make a distress call.

The flight was carrying a total number of 295 people – comprising 280 passengers and 15 crew members.

Malaysia Airlines is in the process of notifying the next-of-kin of the passengers and crew. All possible care will be provided to the next-of-kin.

The Government of Malaysia is dispatching a special flight to Kiev, carrying a Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team, as well as a medical team.

According to information provided by Kiev Air Traffic Control, the location of the plane’s emergency locator beacon is 48 degrees 7 minutes and 23 seconds North; and 38 degrees 31 minutes and 33 seconds East.

The Ukrainian authorities believe that the plane was shot down.

At this early stage, however, Malaysia is unable to verify the cause of this tragedy.

But we must – and we will – find out precisely what happened to this flight.

No stone can be left unturned.

If it transpires that the plane was indeed shot down, we insist that the perpetrators must swiftly be brought to justice.

Emergency operations centres have been established. In the last few hours, Malaysian officials have been in constant contact with their counterparts in Ukraine and elsewhere.

And I will be speaking to a number of world leaders over the coming hours.

I have had several conversations with the Prime Minister of the Netherlands.

I have also spoken to the President of Ukraine. He has pledged that there will be a full, thorough and independent investigation, and Malaysian officials will be invited to take part.

The Ukrainian president also confirmed that his government will negotiate with rebels in the east of the country, in order to establish a humanitarian corridor to the crash site.

Just now, I received a call from President Obama.

He and I both agreed that the investigation must not be hindered in anyway.

An international team must have full access to the crash site.

And no one should interfere with the area, or move any debris, including the black box.

This is a tragic day, in what has already been a tragic year, for Malaysia.

As we work to understand what happened, our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of those onboard the flight.

I cannot imagine what they must be going through at this painful time.

The flight’s passengers and crew came from many different countries.

But today, regardless of nationality, we are all united in grief.

GRABOVE, UKRAINE: Dozens of severely mutilated corpses could be seen strewn in the wreckage of a Malaysian airliner that crashed Thursday in rebel-held eastern Ukraine, an AFP reporter at the scene said.

Debris was spread out for many kilometres and the tail of a passenger jet lay in a corn field with the Malaysian Airlines insignia on it while insurgent fighters and several fire trucks were seen nearby the crash site. - AFP

PETALING JAYA: A Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 plane has reportedly crashed in Ukraine near Russian border.

The plane, MH17, was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur with 280 passengers and 15 crew members.

Thursday, July 17
12.00pm (Amsterdam local time) : Scheduled time of departure of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH17, a boeing 777, from Amsterdam Airport.

12.15pm: (Amsterdam local time): MH17 departed from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew.
10.15pm: MAS confirms it received notification from Ukrainian Air Traffic Control (ATC) that it had lost contact with MH17 at 30km from Tamak waypoint, approximately 50km from the Russia-Ukraine border.
11.30pm: MH17 presumably crashed. MAS releases official tweet,“Malaysia Airlines has lost contact of MH17 from Amsterdam. The last known position was over Ukrainian airspace. More details to follow.”
11.40pm: Moscow based news agency Interfax says Malaysian passenger airliner was shot down at altitude of 10 km above Eastern Ukraine.

12.03am: Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk orders an investigation into the crash.
12.05am: Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak tweets, “I am shocked by reports that an MH plane crashed. We are launching an immediate investigation.”
12.18am: Ukrainian officials at the location of the crash confirm at least 100 bodies are found at the location and that body parts were scattered up to 15km from the site.

 The woman who allegedly bullied senior citizen Sim Siak Heong, 68, in an accident here last Monday is helping the police investigate the case.

The woman, known as Kiki, 30, arrived at the Kuantan district police station at about 4pm. She was accompanied by her parents and a younger sister.

Kuantan district police chief ACP Abdul Aziz Salleh said the police would investigate the case, which had gone viral on the social media, from all aspects.

"The police are looking for the steering wheel lock which was allegedly used by the woman to hit the senior citizen's car.

"According to the woman, she threw it in the street and we are looking for it as an exhibit," he told reporters here Thursday.

He said the police had identified the individual who made a video recording of the incident and then uploading it on the social website.

The police had recorded Sim's statement yesterday and would call him again, if necessary, to assist in the investigation, he added.

He said the case was being investigated for mischief and criminal intimidation.

In the 1.10 pm incident last Monday, Kiki, who was driving alone, turned into road rage and hit Sim's car with a steering lock after the senior citizen knocked her Peugeot 208 car.

Kiki's road rage was recorded on video by a passer-by and uploaded on social websites.

Security forces on high alert over possible ‘attack’ by Sulu gunmen in Sabah

Malaysian security forces are on high alert amid talk of an impending “attack” by Sulu gunmen in Sabah. 
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said security forces were geared up to handle any situation.

“At the same time, Sabahans should disregard rumours that are being spread to cause fear,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

Jalaluddin said the situation around Sabah, particularly within the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone), was peaceful and under control.

The statement came in the wake of a purported dispatch to security personnel in Sabah's east coast that is being circulated on the Internet WhatsApp Messenger.

The so-called dispatch had notified security personnel to be on high alert following reports that at least two groups of Sulu gunmen were preparing to cross into Sabah.

Another widely circulated WhatsApp message stated that 17,000 Sulu gunmen were already in Sabah and were preparing to “strike.”

Liow: Implementation of Drivers' Education Curriculum postponed until further notice

The Transport Ministry has announced that the implementation of the Drivers' Education Curriculum (KPP), scheduled to begin on Aug 1, will be postponed until further notice.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the Road Transport Department (RTD), in formulating the new curriculum, had undertaken considerable research and work in order to create a new KPP that would ensure a new standard for road safety in Malaysia.

However, he said RTD had been asked to undertake further studies to review the curriculum and its costs.

"The needs of the people are being put first but this has to be balanced with the safety of road users and as such, a decision on the implementation of the KPP would need to await the report by the RTD," he said in a statement Wednesday.

Recognising road safety is of paramount importance to reduce the high number of road accidents in the country, Liow said the new curriculum was vital to inculcate safe and responsible driving among road users.

"However, any cost related to the implementation of the new syllabus has to take into account the financial impact it will have on Malaysians," he said.

Selangor Sultan raps Khalid Samad for questioning Mais’ executive powers

Selangor Sultan, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has rapped Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad for questioning the powers of the Selangor State Islamic Council (Mais).

"It is rude to make such a statement by questioning the powers of Mais, as it is also like questioning my powers as head of the religion.

"This is not the first time Khalid Samad has questioned issues pertaining to the executive powers of the council and the State Islamic Enactment which he thinks is obsolete," Sultan Sharafuddin said in his address before launching the Sepang town mosque Tuesday.

Labelling Khalid as "ignorant towards state Islamic laws and Mais' role", Sultan Sharafuddin urged him to study the history of the state and its laws before making any comments that could cause a stir among Muslims.

"I hope he is more careful when issuing statements that touches on the roles of the Sultan and Mais," he said.

The Sultan also stressed that Mais had guaranteed the rights and freedom of non-Muslims.
"Mais respects the non-Muslims as stated in the Federal Constitution.

"Any action by Jais (State Islamic Religious Department) and Mais is to champion the rights of the Muslims without disturbing the non-Muslims," he said.

He also urged politicians not to use Islam for their own political mileage, adding that they should instead issue statements that would ensure the purity of the religion in the country.

Last month, following the refusal by Jais and Mais to return the seized bibles to the Bible Society of Malaysia, Khalid had suggested for the executive powers of Mais to be reviewed.

He said Mais, being the religious advisory council to the Sultan, must be "studied" again to ensure it did not taint the Malay Rulers institution.

Separately, Sultan Sharafuddin called for all Muslims to practise moderateness during the Ramadan, advising them not to fight and slander each other.

"If these continue to happen, the Malays will be extinct and do we want this to happen in our own country? Imagine who is going benefit and who is going to lose from this," he added.

Najib to Meshaal: We stand by Palestinian resistance and People against the Israeli aggression

Malaysian Prime Minister Mohd Najib Abdul Razak reaffirmed Malaysia's support for the Palestinians in their struggle for freedom.

Najib expressed, in a phone call with Hamas Chairman Khaled Meshaal late Monday, his sympathy with the Palestinians especially those facing a brutal Israeli agression in Gaza these days. Meshaal, on his part, highlighted the suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza and other parts of Palestine and called on the Malaysian premier to lobby world leaders in order to end the Israeli aggression and bring Israel to task.

Meshaal also thanked Najib for Malaysia's active humanitarian role in Gaza and called for these efforts to increase and continue.

In a related development,  a group of 50 Malaysian medical doctors are to embark on a mission to Gaza to help in giving medical services to the victims of the Israeli airtrikes. Some of the doctors are to leave to Cairo then to Gaza through Rafah crossing end of this week.

Mabul attack: Gunmen identified, involved in previous kidnapping in Sabah

Gunmen who ambushed and killed a marine policeman on Pulau Mabul are believed to be behind a kidnapping in Sabah's east coast. 

According to an Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) source, the group has been identified and Esscom is working with the Philippines to strengthen their evidence. 

The source said that Esscom received good cooperation from the Philippine authorities which had ordered its marine police to track down the suspects in its waters.

It also said that Esscom would consider publishing photographs of the suspects for the public to identify.

Esscom operations director Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun said security was being stepped up at resorts in Sabah's east coast.

Bernama reported that Esscom intelligence director Datuk Ahmad Nadzer Nordin had said that based on intelligence network, there were 14 kidnapping groups from southern Philippines.

Of the number, at least four had carried out kidnappings in Sabah's east coast, he said.

In the 11.10pm incident on Saturday, Kpl Abdul Rajah Jamuan, 32, was killed while his colleague, Kons Zakia Aleip, 26, was believed to have been abducted by a group of eight armed men at the Mabul Water Bungalow Resort off Semporna.

The latest incident follows the kidnapping of a fish breeder and his worker in Kunak near Lahad Datu by armed men last month.

Mabul attack: Slain cop buried with full honours , Abducted cop is alive

Slain Marine Police Kpl Abdul Rajah Jemuan was buried with full honours at the Muslim cemetery near his home village of Kampung Bubul, about six kilometres from this Sabah east coast town, Monday morning.
His widow Salamah Ahmad and parents Jamuan Ajuan and Kamsiah Indaman were present along with Sabah Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Abdul Malek Harun.

Kpl Abdul Rajah, 32, was killed when eight gunmen attacked a Marine Police team at the Mabul Water Bungalows Resort late Saturday.

Another Marine Police personnel, Kons Zakiah Aleip, was reported missing following the 11pm incident.

Police Kons Zakiah Aleip who was kidnapped by Filipino gunmen, has telephoned his wife Sunday night to say he was alive.

“He called his wife (Sharifah Erna Berson) last night saying that he is ok except that he is with some people,” Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar told reporters.

When asked where Zakiah could be held, Khalid said that they were not sure and that they were waiting for further calls.

He also said the police roughly knew the identity of some of those involved in the attack on Pulau Mabul on Saturday night.

Zakiah, 26, was kidnapped after his colleague Kpl Abdul Rajah Jamuan, 32, was shot dead in the attack.
Rajah was buried Monday with full honours.

Tun Mahathir Urges People To Donate To Palestinians

 Malaysians should extend help, even in a small way, to ease the pain of Palestinians who are under siege by Israel military, said former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He said the Perdana Global Peace Foundation had set up a fund, which could be accessed via the Internet, to enable the public to donate to the people of Gaza, Palestine.

"To date, we've collected RM500,000 and we accept any amount, even RM1," he told reporters after launching a book entitled "TPPA (Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement): Malaysia is not for Sale" authored by the Malay Economic Action Council at Karangkraf here Friday.

Dr Mahathir, who is also Perdana Global Peace Foundation president, said the foundation would seek help from Palestine's neighbours to take the aid, including money and medicines, to the Palestinians.

At least 98 Palestinians have been killed since Israel launched its "Operation Protective Edge" on Tuesday.

Present were Dr Mahathir's wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali and Malay Economic Action Council CEO Mohd Nizam Mahshar.

Najib Says He Can Work With Selangor MB Tan Sri Khalid

Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, who is facing pressure to relinquish the post of Selangor Menteri Besar, tonight received a morale booster from the Prime Minister who admitted that they could work together despite their differing political ideologies.

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said: "Although there are differences, we can cooperate in many other areas."

The Prime Minister also thanked the Selangor Menteri Besar for agreeing to attend the breaking of the fast together with the people of Selangor organised by the Selangor Federal Development Department at the Tengku Ampuan Jemaah Mosque at Bukit Jelutong, here tonight.

About 2,000 Selangor people attended the gathering which began with the breaking of the fast, followed by Maghrib, Isyak and Terawih prayers.

"This (Khalid's presence) is a good sign, I believe," said Najib.

Also present were the prime minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and chairman of the Selangor Federal Action Council Datuk Seri Noh Omar.

Over the past few months, Abdul Khalid had been under pressure from various parties including the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leader himself to relinquish the post of Selangor Menteri Besar.

The 'Langkah Kajang' move which was seen as an attempt to topple Abdul Khalid earlier had reappeared in the PKR especially after he had failed to defend his post as head of the PKR Kuala Selangor division in the party election recently.

Abdul Khalid was appointed as Selangor Menteri Besar after the opposition pact won the 12th general election in the state in 2008.

Malaysia Will Continue Supporting Palestinian Cause

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today reaffirmed Malaysia's stand to continue giving its full support to the struggles of the people of Palestine.

He said support and aid would be given to the Palestinians for as long as Palestine had not become a sovereign state.

"We know our brothers in Gaza are being cruelly attacked and the new Palestine ambassador (Dr Anwar Hamadto Kassem AL-Agha) who met me this afternoon told me of the sufferings of the Palestinians.

"Palestine Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas has also written to me, asking me to visit the West Bank. Although I have been to Gaza, I have not gone to the West Bank yet.

"I say that as long as Palestine is not a sovereign state, we will support the struggles of its people and we pray that one day they will achieve their aim," he said at a breaking of fast with Selangor residents at Tengku Ampuan Jemaah Mosque, here.

Also present were his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim and Selangor Federal Action Council chairman Datuk Seri Noh Omar.

Najib said the Islamic land (Palestine) was easily occupied and oppressed by another power because the Islamic world itself was not strongly united.

In fact, he said, the conflict in the Islamic world was even more terrible when many Muslims died at the hands of their brethren.

"For example, in Syria, 150,000 Muslims have been killed and almost 10 million have become refugees. In Iraq, many too have been killed...their hands tied and placed with bombs. Why there is no end to the Sunni-Shiite conflict?

"I use the easy Sunni-Shiite analogy, likening it to us being on the same highway and heading for the same destination, but the only difference is that we are on different lanes. As long as we keep to our lane and not shove others which could cause an accident, we will all arrive safely at our destination," he said.

Najib said the serious conflicts in some of the Muslim countries also made it difficult for the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to resolve them at the discussion table.

In light of this, he called on Muslims in this country to strengthen themselves physically, spiritually and mentally - the foundation to building a more secure future.

"When we have built strength in many fields, Muslims in Malaysia will be good examples or role models. Let us make Malaysia as an exemplary Muslim nation that is successful, developed and progressive based on the principles of Maqasid Syariah (foundational goals).

"This is indeed the policy practised by our government," he said. Earlier, Najib handed out a contribution of RM5,000 to each of the 100 tahfiz schools in Selangor.

Malaysia condemns Israeli killing of 24 Palestinians

Malaysia have demanded Israel to cease its military aggression towards the Palestinian people after military air strikes conducted by Israelis killed at least 24 Palestinians including 7 children.

In a press statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia condemned the series of military air strikes carried out by Israel under Operation Protective Edge on the Gaza Strip. It was reported that 150 were also injured during the strikes.

“Malaysia demands Israel to immediately cease its military aggression towards the Palestinian people and urge all parties involved to stop any provocative action which may escalate the already tense situation.

“Malaysia calls on all parties to exercise restraint to avoid greater damage and loss of life, especially among the civilian population in the Gaza Strip,” said the statement Wednesday.

Israel air strikes shook Gaza on Wednesday and Palestinians militants also traded attacks by launching rockets at Tel Aviv in a warfare that has intensified since Tuesday.

According to Reuters, the Israeli military has attacked 550 Hamas sites, including 60 rocket launchers, over the past two days.

Tengku Adnan proposes town hall meeting with homeless, vagrants

Following criticisms over the closing down of soup kitchens in Bukit Bintang, the Federal Territories Ministry now wants to meet the homeless in a town hall meeting.

Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said in his Facebook on Tuesday that the dialogue, yet to be scheduled, would allow the homeless to voice their complaints so that the government can help improve their standard of living.

The Ministry held talks with 12 relevant non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to discuss issues related to the homeless and beggars in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday in an attempt to smoothen the government’s controversial crackdown against the homeless.

"The meeting today reached a consensus between ministries, government agencies and NGOs involved to jointly develop short-term and long-term strategies to help resolve the issue of homeless people and beggars in Kuala Lumpur that has lasted so long," said Tengku Adnan.

He explained that NGOs could still continue to distribute food to the homeless beyond the 2km radius of Lot 10 in Bukit Bintang.

"It is agreed that a special committee involving the government agencies and NGOs will be set up to fine-tune the process of food distribution to the homeless and to discuss the best way to help them," said Tengku Adnan

Earlier, Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Adnan Md Ikshan, who chaired the meeting with the NGOs, told reporters that the ban on soup kitchens operating within a 2km radius of Lot 10 will only be enforced after Hari Raya.

Last Thursday, Tengku Adnan came under fire after he announced that soup kitchens would no longer be allowed to operate within a 2km radius of Lot 10 because they allegedly encouraged people to remain homeless and unemployed.

A day later, Tengku Adnan clarified his statement and said the ministry and DBKL have measures in place to ensure the homeless are taken care of.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that the Government would hold discussions with soup kitchens to reach an amicable outcome for all affected parties.

DAP’s Teng and Liu quarrel again

AN old feud between two DAP leaders has erupted once again, in another drama to Pakatan Rakyat’s attempt to oust Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim as Selangor Mentri Besar.

Datuk Teng Chang Khim and Ronnie Liu, his former colleague in the state executive council, traded barbs on social media over the proposed Kinrara-Damansara Expressway (Kidex) project.

In a Facebook posting on Sunday, the State Local Government, Study and Research Committee chairman hit out at Liu for his “about-turn” on the issue following the declassification of documents dated Feb 15, 2012, over a State Economic Action Council meeting.

“Initially, Liu was calling for the project to be suspended for what he criticised as Khalid’s lack of transparency,” said Teng. “But after the documents were declassified, it was revealed that the project’s approval was subject to the fulfilment of several pre-conditions.

“This meant that the project had not been approved yet. Why then was Liu attacking Khalid and the state government which he was once a part of and calling for the project’s suspension?

“Only when the true situation emerged that Liu stated that there was no approval for the project,” Teng said.
In response, Liu accused Teng and Khalid of being inconsistent with their stand on the Kidex project.

“Now that Teng has confessed that Kidex was never approved by the state government, would he be gentleman enough to apologise to me for his earlier accusations?

“So much about CAT (Competency, Accountability and Transparency) and honesty as politician,” he posted yesterday.

Liu said both Khalid and Teng did not have the guts to offer a final answer over Kidex despite fierce opposition from the public.

“He (Khalid) has to go or else Pakatan Rakyat may not retain the state in the next general election,” he said when contacted.

The rivalry between both senior DAP members was evident during the party’s state elections in 2010.
Liu reportedly joined Teng’s rival faction, headed by former state executive councillor Teresa Kok, in a bid to oust the then Selangor Speaker.

Liu failed to earn a seat in the state committee, although his support for Kok ensured that she became the state chairman, defeating Teng by a single vote.

Khalid refutes text messages, says not resigning as Mentri Besar

There is no truth to text messages circulated on Monday alleging that Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim ( is resigning from his position as Selangor Mentri Besar.

“There is no such thing. I just had a meeting with the state economic planning unit and will be having another meeting later,” Khalid informed reporters at the lobby of Bangunan Darul Ehsan (SUK 2) on Monday.

The Mentri Besar also laughed off suggestions that the messages could be the work of rivals from PKR.
“This is the fasting month and it is not appropriate for me to speculate. But the story is not true,” he said.

Khalid also asked for speculation on his position to be put to rest.

On Monday, text messages were circulated claiming that Khalid would tender his resignation letter to the Selangor Sultan.

A message, which allegedly quoted Bernama, said that Khalid had sent his resignation letter to the Sultan and would be replaced by Pas exco Iskandar Samad.

Bernama have denied the message was from the news agency. Iskandar, when contacted, also denied he would replace Khalid.

Earlier, journalists flocked to the Kayangan, Mestika and Alam Shah palaces in Shah Alam and Klang.

Muslims Should Avoid Militancy And Extremism - PM

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said militancy and extremism that lead to mass murder in the name of religion is forbidden.

"Even in war, we are not allowed to kill ordinary people let alone take our own life and the life of innocent people.

"Such acts will have an adverse impact not only on the family but Islam itself," he said when presenting aid to senior citizens and single mothers at Masjid Al-Muhajir, Batu 8, Lepar near here Saturday.

Earlier, he performed Isyak and Tarawih prayers with the villagers. It was also attended by Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob and Tabung Haji chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Rahim.

Najib said Islam always encourages its followers to be moderate in all aspects of life.

Muslims in this country should be grateful for being able to live in peace with a government capable of bringing about comprehensive change.

Without peace and stability, it was impossible for the government to bring development and guarantee freedom of worship as is practised during Ramadan.

The country's peace and stability allow the government to chart growth which is the highest in the region.

Najib said the moderation practised by Malaysia won compliments of other Muslim countries including Saudi Arabia, which often praised our haj pilgrims as among the best.

"Our compliance with laws and regulations and mutual respect reflect our understanding of the Islamic religion. This way, more people will respect us."

Muslims in this country have been urged not to be involved in militancy and extremism as it will only tarnish the image of Islam.

PM's Dept: Apply for govt jobs through PSC, not 'Datin Maimunah'

People who are keen to work in the public sector have to submit their applications to the Public Service Commission (PSC) only.

The Prime Minister's Department (JPM) issued a reminder that positions in the public service sector does not involve a third party or charge any fees.

The JPM recently received complaints about an individual through a Facebook account registered in the name of 'Datin Maimunah' who claimed of being able to get a job in the government service.
Datin Maimunah claimed she worked in JPM and could help to secure a government job for a fee of RM750 per person.

JPM said a police report was lodged to prevent fraud and to ensure that no individual continues to abuse the name of the department to mislead the public.

 "Guidelines for filling vacancies is based on the Public Service Commission Circular No 1/ 2014 which clearly states that any admission into the civil service does not go through a third party nor impose any fees," JPM said.

Islam Allows 'Selfie' Based On One's Good Intention

Selfie refers to the act of snapping one's own photos using a smart phone, web camera or other handheld gadgets and uploading the photos at the social websites like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

The selfie craze is phenomenal that even Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, the guardian of the Malay language, found it fit that the term 'selfie' be accepted into the Malay lexicography (Kamus Dewan).

And there is no letting up to the 'selfie' craze - selfies at parties, planes, bathrooms, holy abodes, funerals and the list goes on. While the real purpose of the selfies is being debated, more than often selfies are presumed to present a flattering image of oneself.

Some of the images highlight one's ego and self-centeredness, intentionally or unintentionally, something to be shunned especially during the holy month of Ramadan where Muslims are required to achieve moderation in their desires and behaviour.

While Muslim scholars are in agreement that selfie does not go against Islam, University Malaya's Islamic Studies Academy Ustaz Dr Muhammad Lukman Ibrahim reminded that it all depends on the intentions of the person who does the selfie.

If the intention is just to snap pictures and share with friends, then it is allowed.

However, he stressed that selfies from the fairer sex have to take note of their modesty, including covering their body parts like required in Islam and wear loose clothing.

They should avoid exaggerating or boasting of what they have, be it their physical appearance of wealth.

"When 'selfie' becomes a habit, where one wants to selfie anywhere and anytime, then this is an act that does not benefit one in anyway and thus strongly opposed in Islam," he said to Bernama.

Dr Muhammad Lukman also referred to the blatant attitude of some who share pictures flaunting their luxurious lifestyle and boast of their ways and this is something that selfies have to stay away from.

In the context of Ramadan, he said pictures of sumptuous meals at five star hotels at best should not be shared at the social websites.

The pictures create temptation for the poor who cannot afford a luxury meal and make them envious of their rich brethren.

The bottom line is that things that depict luxury and boasted by the society should not be shared freely.

Sharing similar views with Dr Muhammad Lukman is Dr Mohd Izhar Ariff Mohd Kashim, a senior lecturer at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia's (UKM) Islamic Studies Faculty, who opined that the 'selfie' culture regardless should be viewed positively.

"If their selfies are just to boast or flaunt, then that is between him/her and Allah S.W.T., as far as I'm concerned it does not go against the ethos of Islam.

And the selfie's purpose is considered really good if it is to glorify Ramadan.

"Maybe a selfie of one at the mosque may help motivate others to attend prayers or programmes at the mosque. Selfies like this also highlight one's appreciation for the Ramadan," he said.

When asked on some who fancy sharing pictures of breaking fast through social websites, he said: "There is nothing wrong, as long as the selfie is shared among 'friends' or 'followers' who are of the same status with the selfie.

However, if their friends and followers are from difficult or poor background it is best avoid uploading the selfie.

Dr Mohd Izhar advised the community to utilise selfie in calling the people to get closer with Allah S.W.T and avoid intentions that deviate from devotion to Allah.

Meanwhile one of the youth leaders at the Batu Gajah Mosque in Perak, Mohd Shaiful Rizal Mohd Saed, 29, believed that the 'selfie' medium is unnecessary as the act of devotion is only between and Allah S.W.T.

"It is undeniable that there are selfies that do good but there are fears that the photos shared may create slander. Thus one may accrue sins for slandering the photos though the selfie may have uploaded it with sincere intentions.

In a nutshell, it all depends on the intention of the individuals, whether they are doing it to achieve something good or otherwise.
"Before we do anything, we selfie first" is a common phrase among the youngsters these days, reflecting the selfie craze of today's society, particularly the Gen Y and Gen Z.

NGO urges Khalid’s detractors to ‘keep their mouth shut’

A non-governmental organisation has urged five PKR elected representatives to ‘keep their mouths shut’ and stop asking Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim to step down as Selangor Mentri Besar.

The Pakatan Anak-anak Selangor Menyokong Mentri Besar (Pasmeb) also labelled the five leaders as the "budak nakal" or minions of Khalid's rival, current PKR deputy president Azmin Ali.

The pact, which is aligned with Khalid’s camp, named the five PKR leaders as Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli, Kuala Langat MP Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid, Sri Muda assemblyman Suhaimi Shafie, Bukit Katil MP Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin and Batu Caves assemblyman Amirudin Shari.

Pasmeb president Mazli Saring said the five should not attack Khalid anymore and cause chaos in the state's politics.

"It seems that in every two days, one of them will come up with a media statement to run down Khalid.

"They do not even originate from Selangor," he told reporters when met at the KLIA2 here Wednesday.

Mazli, who is former Selangor PKR Youth information chief, said despite being elected representatives in the state, Rafizi was from Terengganu, Abdullah Sani and Suhaimi were from Perak while Amirudin was from Johor.

He said Shamsul, from Malacca, was not even a representative in the state but wanted to interfere in the matters here.

"The people of Selangor voted for the leaders and so, they should serve them instead of harping on Khalid to step down as Mentri Besar, " Mazli said.

He urged for the PKR leadership to take disciplinary action against the five as party adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had already warned members not to attack their leaders.
Mazli said there was a need to defend Khalid as the latter tends to refrain from speaking out against his detractors.

Mazli, who had just returned from Sabah, also said Khalid enjoyed the support from members in four party branches in the state during the recent PKR polls there.

"Khalid gained a total of 2,069 votes against Azmin's 326 for the deputy presidency post in polls held at the Pensiangan, Keningau, Tenom and Papar branches," he said.

Khalid is facing off with Azmin and PKR secretary general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail in the race for the deputy president post in the party polls.

New Sabah police chief: 'We will strike fear into hearts of enemies'

Newly-appointed Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman, said he will use his experience as a former marine police officer in Sabah from 1978 to 1990 to strike fear into the hearts of enemies who threaten the security of the people of Sabah.

"We will strike fear into enemies who try to enter the territorial waters of Sabah and threaten the safety and security, especially of residents living along the coastal areas of Sabah and the islands," he told reporters after paying a courtesy call on Sabah Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Juhar Mahiruddin, at the State Palace, here Wednesday.

He said the focus during 'Ops Tayang' was on Sabah waters and he would discuss it again with enforcement bodies at sea, to consolidate security in the coastal areas of Sabah, in addition to generating harmonious cooperation to achieve it.

About security ties with the Philippines authorities, Jalaluddin said he would re-establish a 'bilateral meeting' to discuss border security.

Jalaluddin, who was the former Kelantan police chief, took over from Datuk Hamza Taib after the latter was transferred to Bukit Aman as Commercial Crime Investigation deputy director.

Wan Junaidi: Malaysia under militant threat without ISA

The repeal of the Internal Security Act (ISA) has impacted the fight against militant activities, said Deputy Home Minister Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

He said without the ISA, which allowed for the detention of someone without trial, it was difficult for the security forces to take appropriate action against suspected militants.

Under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 or SOSMA, which replaced the ISA, individuals can only be remanded for 28 days and have to be charged in court after this period.

"And only after they have been convicted by the court, can the individuals involved be jailed.

"But in the movement (militancy), it is not easy to provide proof that is acceptable to the court," Wan Junaidi told Dewan Negara in a reply to Senator Noriah Mahat.

Noriah wanted to know the reason for the existence of militant groups in this country and the holistic approach taken by the government with the cooperation of other countries in stemming the militancy threat.

Wan Junaidi noted that 12 Malaysians had been charged in court for militant activities.

"Eight were released due to lack of evidence. Only four cases are still on trial.

"So, this is among the effects of the abolishment of the much-feared ISA but unfortunately, our country is under threat without the ISA," he said.

Wan Junaidi said among the other factors that led Malaysians to become militants were the desire to help friends fight against what was purportedly for the sake of Islam.

He said there was also the wish to die as martyrs and the believe that involvement in such militant activities was the easiest and fastest way to go to heaven.

He said the authorities arrested 108 individuals of different nationalities since 2010 for their involvement in militant activities.

He said various measures had been taken through the police in curbing such activities, including investigating the activities of groups that aroused suspicion and monitoring of individuals who had been involved in militant groups before.

The deputy minister said the ministry also conducted a series of rehabilitation programmes for the detainees and their family members, besides establishing close cooperation and exchange of intelligence information with foreign security agencies, especially in Asean countries.

To a supplementary question from Senator Datuk Dr Firdaus Abdullah on whether the ISA should be brought back, he said as the Act had already been abolished, the government should move forward by taking various initiatives to stem militant activities.

"We have to live with the current situation and the existing law. What is left for us to do is to improve our intelligence personnel and raise further their capabilities, besides enhancing cooperation with foreign intelligence agencies," he said.

Nobody asked Mohamad Redzuan to resign, says sec-gen

The alleged resignation of a Universiti Malaya dean has taken a new twist with the Education Ministry saying that his contract had merely ended.

Ministry secretary-general II Prof Datuk Seri Dr Zaini Ujang said Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Redzuan Othman’s second term as the dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences department had ended.

“Nobody asked him to resign. He has completed his two terms as a dean,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Asked if Dr Mohamad Redzuan’s term could be extended, Dr Zaini said it would not be practical as the professor was already bound to retire early next year.

Dr Zaini said one term lasted about two to three years and normally, a dean served two terms.
“The ministry had nothing to do with the resignation. It was just a normal process of completing a term,” he said.

Dr Zaini said the ministry was only involved in the appointment of a university’s vice-chancellor and deputy vice-chancellor.

“The rest, including professors and deans, are not in the ministry’s interest,” he said.

Online news portals had reported that the ministry ordered Dr Mohamad Redzuan, who was the UM Centre for Democracy and Elections (UMCedel) director, to resign from his position.

It was also reported that Dr Mohamad Redzuan’s tenure as the faculty dean was not renewed.
Some reports linked the dismissal to the centre’s previous survey findings on Malaysian politics which did not go down well with the university.

In one of the polls conducted by UMCedel, over 60% of respondents preferred Pakatan Rakyat’s manifesto compared to Barisan’s pledges.

Several UM academicians defended the need for academic freedom following news that Dr Mohamad Redzuan had resigned.

UM academic staff association president Dr Azmi Sharom said if it was true that the ministry ordered for him to quit, then it would be “an affront to academic freedom.”

In support of Dr Mohamad Redzuan, former deputy higher education minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah quit as a research fellow at the university.

He made this announcement over his Twitter account, saying that the move was based on the principles of “academic freedom and solidarity”.

Minister questions integrity of UMcedel surveys

The legitimacy of Universiti Malaya’s Centre for Democracy and Elections’ (UMcedel) surveys is being questioned by Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan .

“UMcedel surveys sometimes touch on subjective political issues. Way beyond the normal academic scope. Political surveys do have biasness,” tweeted the Kota Belud MP, Monday.
Abdul Rahman said that although the surveys targeted both the Government and opposition, there was still a bias.

“Sometimes their sample’s size and quality and their rather ‘framing’ questions could lead to particular bias,” he said.

“Those who attended UMcedel forums always come back with a feeling how bias UMcedel is in its survey approach and methodologies,” he continued.

Abdul Rahman said that UMcedal’s political surveys were not academic research, but rather questionnaires handed out to the public.

“Academicians are untouchable? Helloooo.... this is 2014. Even Kings are made fun of,” he said in reference to the dismissal of UMcedel director Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Redzuan Othman.
“The good old Prof can open up his own private poll agency after this. No one’s gonna stop him. I wish him luck,” tweeted Abdul Rahman.

Former deputy education minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah who announced that he was quitting his position as University Malaya (UM) senior research fellow in protest of the dismissal responded to Abdul Rahman saying that the minister doesn’t know “what actually happened (sic)”.

“So, it’s okay to politically pressure,” asked Saifuddin, in response to Abdul Rahman’s tweets.
Abdul Rahman replied, “I think dismissing a polling agency head is hardly an academic interference Dato! No need to overreact.”

According to reports, UM’s political science lecturer Professor Datuk Dr Mohammad Redzuan Othman was asked to quit his position as director of UMcedel by the Education Ministry as the ministry was unhappy with independent surveys and polls on Malaysian politics conducted by the professor.

It was also reported that Professor Dr Redzuan’s position as dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences department was not renewed.

The reports claimed that the professor’s termination was due to dissatisfaction over the results of UMcedel’s surveys and polls, which allegedly showed Barisan Nasional in a bad light.
