Unisel Yet To Settle Salary Arrears As Promised, JNSB Workers Contemplating Strike

SHAH ALAM, Sept 2 (Bernama) -- Employees of Jana Niaga Sdn Bhd (JNSB) which manages the student hostels of Universiti Selangor (Unisel), are planning to go on strike, since Unisel had failed to settle their salary since July.
JNSB Student Community head Noorashikeen Mohd Stap said prior to this, Unisel had assured that it would pay the arrears and urged JNSB to open the student registration counters in Bestari Jaya, Kuala Selangor for the new semester on Aug 23.
However, she said, until today, 55 JNSB workers have yet to receive their half-month pay for July and salary for August.
"We received half of our pay for July, after staging a strike on Aug 10. We opened the registration counter on Aug 23, after a discussion with State Secretary Datuk Mohammad Khusrin Munawi.
"However, we are disappointed that the management did not pay the balance of our pay for July and our full pay for August," she said when contacted, here, Sunday.
Noorashikeen said, due to the irresponsible attitude of Unisel, many of her colleagues had started looking for other jobs while some had quit.
She also said 3,200 students had received their keys and were staying at 44 hostel blocks since Aug 23.
"We have given our full cooperation. We have opened the counters when requested to do so. But where are our salaries? she asked.
Newspapers had reported that Selangor Barisan Nasional (BN) deputy chairman Datuk Seri Noh Omar had said that Unisel owed JNSB RM15 million.
The debt included cost of maintenance at the main campus and the operation of the hostels at the university which belongs to the Selangor state government.
In a follow up, the Selangor state government announced the setting up of an arbitration panel headed by Muhammad Khusrin to settle the problem between Unisel and JNSB.
