Himpun Wants Law To Prevent Apostasy

SHAH ALAM, Oct 22 (Bernama) -- The Gathering of One Million Muslims (Himpun), themed "Save Our Faith", today wants the government to formulate a special law to prevent activities to convert Muslims in the country.
Himpun chairman, Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid, said this was among 10 resolutions reached at the gathering, which included provisions safeguarding the special position of Islam, as enshrined in the Federal Constitution, to be drafted into the new law to replace the Internal Security Act.
About 4,000 people, including representatives from several non-governmental organisations, attended the gathering which was held at the Shah Alam Stadium. Also present was Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria.
Mohd Azmi said the country's education system should also be reviewed to ensure Muslim students were not exposed to elements which could erode their Islamic faith.
He said a declaration containing the 10 resolutions would be submitted to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin.
Meanwhile, at a media conference held after the gathering, Azmi refuted claims by some quarters that Himpun was an agenda to demonise other religions.
